I spotted at least one well known artist who used the Amiga in former times ;-) Guess who...

Wow.  That was a shiny bit of revisionist history.

Not to say a Mac isn't a great creative tool....but it isn't and wasn't the ONLY such tool, nor was it the first such tool.

@persia,
Last I heard this was an Amiga site, if you want to say happy birthday to a Mac go to a Mac site they will appreciate it more. I have a mini mac, it is a very good door holder, but for using it as a computer, I would prefer a sinclair more, it has more power. Heck even a Radio Shack TRS 80 model 1 was better to use.
The only good use for a Mac is a fish tank, uh let me take that back it would probably kill the fish.
The only good use for a Mac is a pigeon house, that way if it kills the pigeons no one would really care.
If I had a Mac, I would set it up in the middle of my yard for my dogs to pee on.
It is a heck of a thing when you buy a Mini Mac and find out that the OS system you where planning to put on it costs 10 times more than the computer.
but
That is just about right for a Apple product.

Since I use Macs, my opinions on this should strike some as odd, but I never really cared for the Macintosh.
The early models were a fabulous waste of a great processor.
I use some of the PPC models to run MorphOS.
But even though I have OSX on a couple of machines, when I want a mainstream OS I switch to a Windows platform.

Jobs' pet project never really impressed me.
A collection of borrowed and stolen ideas slickly marketed at higher than reasonable prices.
If you were dumb enough to fall for it, that's your problem.

Even the ST was better than the Macintosh.

Easy, it has to be one of the few models that are capable of running MorphOS.
Load that, presto, better than Amiga.

+1.   Amiga is a great machine, but, it didn't corner the market on great ideas, nor on fanatical, polarized loyalty.  ;)

You are not telling me anything I did not know when they were current.
When Macs were 68K based, my company was selling multi-user, multi-tasking 68K based hardware.
Like I said, great waste of a good processor.
Look how long the went without a CLI.

Come on y'all. Apple and its Macintosh is part of the great '80s heritage shared with Commodore and the Amiga, and others of that era. We don't stand apart from Apple or Microsoft or IBM, we stand with them and in many ways because of them. I think its perfectly fine to wish a Happy 30th Birthday to the Macintosh.

Next year will be our turn, and y'all can post on Mac, and Atari, and other forums in the 'Other Operating Systems' category (or something to that effect); Happy 30th Birthday Amiga!!!

The Mac is never positioned as perfect. True, Apples marketing department can spin things with the best of them, but some facts do remain and Apple's Macintosh lineage of computers has given the personal computer market some of its firsts.

Commodore also gave the computer and digital entertainment industry some of its firsts:
First 32-bit games console with CD-ROM
First pre-emptive multitasking personal computer under $1,000 that can plug into a TV out of the box.

These "firsts" can always be spun this way or that, just keep adding caveats. As we have learned, and Apple has taught us this lesson more than most; just because it is "first" does not mean it's good, or successful. But is does put ideas in the minds of others to improve upon. If for nothing else, the Mac has been an arena where a lot of industry disruption played out, for better or worse. Like 'em, don't like 'em, it doesn't matter; It has been a platform that has simultaneously delighted and disappointed computer users consistently for 30 years, and that my friends is a feet worth recognising.

Oh god, we had one of those. Rattling deathtrap if you tried to go above 90mph, 1.0L engine (or was it a 1.1?), and then a decade of blowing up transmissions when they tried to put a bigger engine without also beefing up the tranny. I remember how excited my dad was to order it though, the brochures laying around the house, got it custom from the factory with a digital dashboard. Goodbye Ford Pinto station wagon that we had before that, hello woodgrain siding! :P

I'm amazed at all the people read a forum called "Other Operating Systems" and then trash it because it GASP has "Other Operating Systems" on it.  How dare someone post something on topic, let's trash it with a bunch of off topic posts.

Nope, never touched a Mac until I bought my Quicksilver in advance of its support under MorphOS.

The first computer I used was a Wang 2200.
The first personal computer I used was a SWTPC 6800 based system.
From there Tandy Color Computers and Amigas.
In fact, I never owned a PC until 32 bit graphics cards became available and the PCI bus was introduced.

I still prefer Motorola based hardware, but you can keep the vast majority of Apple's production.
