Title: Just spent an hour with Google Glass
Post by: bloodline on June 27, 2014, 07:01:56 PM
It was fun for about 5min, until I realised that I didn't actually NEED any of the functionality it offers. The speech recognition was very good for me, but completely refused to understand my girlfriend. I'm left with a slight headache and I can definitely feel my right eye has been strained :-/

The units all become VERY hot in use and are actually quite heavy. The contact speaker simply refused to transmit audio effectively to my skull.

Overall the device is quite intrusive despite sitting just above my field of view (an intentional position by Google).

The one application that was really good, was the augmented reality star finder... But again, a novelty not a function :-/

A nice experiment, but it's not a product.

Thanks for the report. I expect I'd have a similar reaction if I were to try it. Where/how did you have the opportunity to give it a run?

Thom at OSNews had an interesting link/editorial (http://www.osnews.com/story/27797/On_Google_Glass) on Google Glass recently as well.

Google were doing some select demos today and again tomorrow at Kings Cross in London, and my girl friend managed to get an invite, so we went and tried them out!

Never tried one but I think I'd expect about the same out of it.

One feature I would appreciate out of something like this is to be able to record every moment of your life that you are wearing it in case you capture something spectacular. But then there is the whole creepy privacy issue that pretty much ruins that. And you'd also have to wear it all the time for that, unless I needed full time prescription glasses it's something I'd never want to do.

In the end I think I'll be sticking with my touch phone for a very long time as my personal computing/media/camera/navigaton/etc. device. I also found tablets too cumbersome for my liking, glass feels similar to me, 5" screen in my pocket feels just right in terms of usefulness vs. encumbrance.

The only application i think google glass would be good for is using it with a motorbike. I like the idea of having information available such as speed, rpm, and possibly nav without having to look down all the time. I really dislike looking down when riding- it makes riding with awareness difficult.

@Bif. Have you considered a smar%&$#?@!%&$#?@!%&$#?@!%&$#?@!ch?

I see someone recording me with one of these things, it's going down on the pavement.

How would you know if he was recording you?

Given the battery life is just under an hour, the chances are... You're not being recorded... Also it makes a crap Head Up Display, as you must focus on the display to read it.

The Daily Show (http://thedailyshow.cc.com/videos/w95a3v/glass-half-empty) captures the situation perfectly, as always.

Beats me, man, I just assume. If he doesn't want me to assume he's recording me, he could try not walking around with a camera on his face.
