Emulating
« on: August 27, 2012, 09:43:16 AM »
Hello

Is it possible to emulate windows software on Amigaone/new Amigaos systems? Are there any software like 'wine' that you can find for linux may be?

Cheers!

There is the Bochs PC emulator available on the OS4Depot site.

I have no means to try it out atm...
Do you know if it emulates programs like WINE directly in WB, or does it require that a win OS is running like with vmware/virtualbox and then run program from there?

Bochs is a full fledged x86 virtual machine ie an emulator. Due to the fact it needs to emulate everything, it can be slow.

Wine = Wine is not an Emulator. Wine is more of an API/Abstraction which allows Windows applications run on top of Linux. It basically translates the OS calls.

To run windows on an Amiga, you will need to use a full emulator since you would need to emulate the x86 CPU and everything else to make it work. There is no Wine on the Amiga unless you accidently spill some on your keyboard.

Okay, I see

haha.. yea all right :)

Hm, any clue if there are drivers for winXP and if they work with the Bochs emulator/amiga?  Mainly wondering about graphics, and ethernet card.

Yes, XP runs on Bochs. But I would recommend against trying to use 3D games on this combination. Overall it will feel sluggish, but it will work, if you have enough RAM and HD space.

Unless you have a very fast Amiga, I very much doubt it would be worth it.

Emulators basically emulate _everything_ including the graphics card etc. I have not used the Amiga port of Bochs so I can not comment on what it supports. If you have a fast enough computer and if there are drivers for the parts it emulates then theoretically it would be possible but I doubt it would be worth the effort.

Don't let me stop you from trying, it could be interesting to see if you got it going. I am also sure people on here would also be interested to know about the achievement. Still, it would be best to see what the Amiga port of Bochs supports before getting to into it all.

lsmart;
excellent!

prowler;
Right now I do not have any Amiga with very much power to it, but I am very interested in Amigaone.. Since I depend on certain software on PC for wotk I need to evaluatie if its even possible to 'convert' back to Amiga again..

Games are of no interest.. Emulating would basically be VPN software, some web-development programs and all the 'regular' web-browsers that are used today.
