I welcome all progress on AmigaOS and am delighted that the Amiwest meeting went well and that there are some new features coming soon.

However AmigaOS4.1FE confuses me a little.
As an AmigaOne X1000 owner, I have already paid for AmigaOS4.1 and AmigaOS4.2.
4.1FE feels like paying again for features that I have paid for already in 4.2.
This annoys me.

Is AmigaOS4.1FE required in order for to make use of the programs announced at Amiwest (Amistore, Mplayer, CANDI, PPAint, etc)?

My A1XE still has OS4.0 on it.
Will I be able to buy this and install it for ~30 Euros?
If so it's an absolute bargain and I'll be dusting off the old machine again.

Good news regardless.

I also feel the question should be addressed for X1000 owners. It seems logical to not have them pay for 4.1 Final Edition if they've already paid for 4.2. Anyone know what specifically happens with X1000 owners and 4.1 FE?

PS  had a comment about my own post count, that upon reflection was wrong (a mixup with AW).

great question. the changes to graphics.library (and the rest of the graphics subsystem) and which are included in AOS4.1 FE, are required for at least personal paint v7.3. i believe that anything which will use the new composited video functionality of the new radeonHD drivers also requires the new OS.

i'll let matthew comment on amistore, but i don't think so, as i was able to run recent builds of amistore under AOS4.1u6 on my pegasos2 just fine.

That's what the official press release from Hyperion says.

"AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition requires NO previous version of AmigaOS 4.x and is a stand-alone product, quite possibly the most affordable version of AmigaOS ever to be released."

"Suggested retail price is 29,95 EUR (SRP includes German VAT, may vary depending on your location)."

i understand your viewpoint, but i think you're missing out based on my usage. OS4.1 was released six years ago and we've gotten free updates ever since. this release has enough feature additions, performance and stability improvements, and the like to make it worth the thirty bucks. but that's just me, i guess.

I agree, although I think what they've called it is wrong and is what is causing this perceived barrier.  When you already own OS4.1, OS4.1FE does not sound like a paid upgrade - it sounds like a version of OS4.1 with all the updates that have already been released.  Even though it has new features, one can't help thinking that this is something which has already been paid for.

They should have called it OS4.1.1, or OS4.1.9 or something.  That way it looks like a new version, rather than just paying again for something we already have.*

* I know we're not doing that, but that's what it looks like on a quick glance.

Yes, it does.

Meaning it will also run in UAE these days? Well, that is interesting.

Is AmiStore entirely optional in upcoming versions, be it FE or 4.2?

Just curious.

In the video presentation of AMIStore it is written that it's not part of AmigaOS.

As I recall they can only number up to AOS5 so if they only call it a new version every .1 they can only upgrade it9 more times! They must charge for every .05 or so.
