Title: A few Amiga 1200 questions
Post by: _ZooL_ on September 19, 2004, 07:20:43 PM
Hi, I'm new to this forum. :-) I have just bought a complete A1200 Magic Pack (not the HD model) quite cheap, how much are these things worth now?

I have heard that these particular 1200s have problems with the floppy drive and old games that accessed the drive directly. Apparently there was a free circuit fix to solve this problem, does anyone have any information on this fix? Is it just a simple solder or a complicated circuit board?

Also, does anyone have a spare 1200 accelerator (even broken ones, I like fixing stuff!) that they would like to sell cheaply?

Thanks,
 _ZooL_

I never heard of the problem that existed in them, but I remember seeing a picture with a wire patched somewhere near the floppy port. Maybe someone can direct you where the fix is at if there is one out for it. :-)

Depends on your location. In germany: About 20-30 EUR probably.

That would be thew Escom A1200 then.  Escom used old HD PC floppies because they were cheaper.  To replace it with an original Amiga floppy requires a fix (Eyetech do them).

Thanks for your help! I thought that it would only be a simple soldering job. I live in England by the way.

Not too far from here, too :-) (North Lincs)

You wouldn't happened to have a spare A1200 accelerator, would you? :-P Btw, are there any shops still selling Amiga stuff in this area? I'd love to relive searching through an Amiga PD library!

Something like going to Aminet, you mean? :-D

For Amiga shops they're all mail order these days, and the ones with the largest stock arn't in the UK.  Amigakit.com is in the UK, Elbox & Vesalia in Germany keep a stock of new stuff (but it's pricey). Steer clear of Analogic (UK).

For A1200 accellerators keep an eye here, on Amibench.com and ebay (be sure to search for stuff 'available to the uk' as again much of the stuff is in Germany).  You won't be getting your hands on my nice 8Mb memory expansion in my A1200 though :-P (bought it from another member here).

Eyetech, creators of the new Amiga A1 motherboards, arn't far from you either ;-)

Damn, I was hoping there'd be some little shop with shelves of PD floppy disk games... Ahhh those were the days... Aminet just doesn't compare to actually browsing through floppy disks in a shop! It looks like eBay is going to be the best place really, the prices on Amibench are just too much for me to afford. Does anyone have any idea about how much the A1200 Magic Pack is worth in the UK?

Did you change out the battery in the end?
That's a cool little expansion btw, ain't it?

It's very cool :-) and no I havn't changed the battery yet ... always seems there's other things to do!

This new A2000 is keeping me busy at the mo ...

Your floppy needs READY signal; one diode will provide it, but a small circuit is a complete solution  (aminet: hard/hack)

Yeah. I've seen the fix, and I will attempt it when I get round to it. If there's one thing I hate is breaking the warranty seal! It's the only Amiga I have that still has it intact! Does anyone know about how much the Magic Pack is worth in the UK?

Depends who you sell it to, if its boxed, you get more.

I got my Escom a1200 Magic Pack, unboxed for £20... so they aint worth a lot i dont think.

When you have an accelerator and / or PCI solution for your amiga they tend to rise in value.

That was the price I was expecting, although mine is fully boxed aswell...

Other stuff that increases value includes no yellowing of the plastic, 3.1 roms, harddisk, a CDRom and even if it just has fast ram (that speeds things up lots on it's own, never mind an accellerator!).

Well it's in very good condition, even the box and manuals. There's no yellowing at all and it has 3.1 roms. No harddisk though, unfortunately. I'm probably going to tower mod it anyway when I get an accelerator...2.5" drives are so expensive! Thanks for all the help!

No they're not :-), just try to get one on ebay. Any HD will do really, I can't imagine tiny HDs below 1 gig can be that expensive (and that is more than sufficient for OS 3.1!).

Don't tower your nice white 1200 :-( . Put it back in the box and keep it. Take an ugly aged yellow scratched dirty 1200 from the flea market. Put that into a tower. When you get fed up with your towermod you always have the nice white 1200 waiting in the box looking like it is supposed to.

Yeah, good point. I mean it is too shiny and clean to be butchered up. And I have a couple of 1200s exactly how you described just waiting to be hacked at. Why does it have to have 3.1 roms! I'd hate to break that lovely shiny warranty seal to get them out. It almost makes me wish that someone had opened it up before I got hold of it! :-D Well, at least I'd have the pleasure of taking it out of the box and stroking the intact warranty seal and the lovely clean white keyboard. Mmmmmmmmm. :-P

If you need 3.1 and don't wanna open A1200, the only option is softkick. IIRC best thing would be to get some of those Blizzards because there are programs like blizkick and they are fast (though any other fast RAM should do, too).
