Arcade (action) games with keyboard controls
« on: December 08, 2012, 10:02:59 PM »
So... what arcade (action) games can I play without a joystick ?
As far as I remember, Fury of the Furries could be played with keyboard. I can't seem to manage the hard drive installation of it though, but that is another matter :D
Prehistorik plays just fine with cursor+space.

Can you tell me some more games ?

Thanx Cammy :)
I wonder why double controls weren't a standard on Amiga. Great majority of (arcade) games are joystick only.

Jurassic Park also has keyboard controls - http://www.lemonamiga.com/games/details.php?id=2736

I think more games should have supported joystick controls, it's a shame most didn't. All the games I have been making have keyboard, joystick and control pad support.

I have a joystick, but my A600 suffers from the dreaded UP = UP+LEFT disease :( So I can not play anything that uses the joystick port. That leaves me with mouse controlled games (heaps of adventures), keyboard controlled ones (very few arcades) and combination (EOB-like games and such).

True. I don't know why it was so hard to map the keyboard controls in addition to joystick ones. After doing the heavy coding for engine, AI, graphics and sound, those keyboard controls seem like a 5 min work.
Thank you Cammy for developing games in a logical way :)

Well, so far we have:
FOTF
Prehistorik
Speris Legacy
Mousetrap :)
Jurassic Park
Pacmania

And I've just rememberd all the pinball games :) Those are keyboard controlled.

The gamecoders u r speaking of refused to use the OS.

This crippled their ability to use the keyboard.

They also did not understand that there are 13 different QWERTY keyboard layouts.

When a French guy bangs the keyboard he gets different keycodes for the same keys than a German or American gets. etc.  A lot of keycodes are identical but 1 or 2 or 3 have moved position.

This is why so many games that have keyboard controls didn't work like the instruction manual said.  If the game used one of those special keys that is in a different location then the game would not appear to work.  Though it would work if you just pressed every key on the keyboard to work out what key it was expecting.

When using the Awesome AmigaOS it will take care of all the remappings for you so can concentrate on your game.

Extremely easy to fix with a keyboard config option, which is very simple to make. Bottom line: They probably didn't care, or think about it.

I think back in those days everyone just assumed that all QWERTY keyboards were the same.  There was no internet.

Back then I just assumed that all keyboards had the same keys in the same place.

I have no idea why France and Germany each moved letters around.  They each use the same letters, they just randomly swapped some keys around.  Who decides this stuff?  It makes keyboards cost a lot more money than they should.

The German language has more words with Z than Y in it, that's why they're using QWERTZ rather than QWERTY (apparently, for some it's easier to write that way).

Strangely, I feel way more comfortable writing English on a QWERTZ keyboard while German is a pain on anything else than a QWERTY keyboard.

This makes me wonder...

How come Commodore and software developers didn't get smart by the post 8-bit era and start designing sticks and games with at least 2 buttons in mind?

I having to play games like Myth and have to keep reaching down to press the Space Bar to do things.

Grrrr!!!
