A few AmigaONE questions.....
« on: November 01, 2002, 05:35:42 PM »
Hello,
Its great to hear that they will take orders for AmigaONE this Nov. 2nd at WoA.  I just have a few questions in mind.

1.Since OS4 will have virtual memory, will it be struggling like Windoze does?

2.Will the machine boot up as fast as a 68030/50mhz A1200 I have now?

3.Will my Voodoo 3 3000 AGP card work for OS4 out of the package?

4.Can you run previous PPC software onto OS4, like a PPC application for OS3.9 onto a new G3 cpu and OS4?

5.How much space will AmigaONE take up to install.

6.Will I be able to use Winmodems, like my USR 56k PCI internal WinModem?

I have this PeeCee now, but if I can save up to get OS4 and the Motherboard, i am gonna tear the guts out of this one and place the AmigaONE board on this.  It has 256mb PC-133 ram. The power supply is 300watts. The case is ATX, and I got x2 6gig harddrives.  Is this enough to bring my AmigaONE over to my friends and show him up with my AmigaONE if I ever get it assembled right? :-D

Ahh. These are the kind of questions I have been missing for so long!

We can only guess of course (since we haven't seen it), but I don't think you should look at Windows when judging VM in general. Since this is a feature Hyperion thinks is completely nessecary(implementing huge games is much easier/quicker if you don't have to fit them all into physical memory), my bet is that they made it as quick and effective as possible.

I don't know how fast you computer boots now, but the Frieden's have at various occations claimed a very fast load time. Apparently the bios initialization will/could be over before the average big monitor have time to display the picture...(and then the OS itself loads of course)
My impression is that you shouldn't be disappointed.

3.Will my Voodoo 3 3000 AGP card work for OS4 out of the package?

I think so... Don't quote me on that though. I seem
to recall all Vodoos being supported. Better check
the OS4 club at Yahoo! - that's where you'll find the
Frieden's these days.

4.Can you run previous PPC software onto OS4, like a PPC application for OS3.9 onto a new G3 cpu and OS4?

So it would seem, since those are realtively new and mostly don't use AGA (in which case it won't work except for in emulation).

5.How much space will AmigaONE take up to install.

No idea. My guess is more than OS3.9, far less that Windows.

Don't know.

Sounds OK to me ;-)

It shouldn't do. It's fair to say that the 68k emulator is going to need a fair bit of RAM, so unless your running OS4 on 8MB RAM,you should be OK. Oh, the VM only kicks in when the real RAM is running out, unlike WinXX which is always running.

The bootup is meant to be very fast. 5 secs for the bios to initialise and not much longer for the OS to kick in.  :-D

I think we can take it pretty much for granted that Voodoo support will be there, along with ATI, although only reckon on 2D support with 3D to follow (guesswork here).

4.Can you run previous PPC software onto OS4, like a PPC application for OS3.9 onto a new G3 cpu and OS4?

Yes. AFAIK, Warp PPC stuff will work on OS4

5.How much space will AmigaONE take up to install.

Estimates vary from 30 to 50% more than 3.9

6.Will I be able to use Winmodems, like my USR 56k PCI internal WinModem?

Highly unlikely. Those winmodems are utter rubbish anyway, you'll get more satisfaction smashing it with a hammer, than trying to get it ever to work on OS4

With regard to the case,HDD's & PSU, they all seem OK. You might be on thin ice with the RAM though, 133 registered RAM modules are recommended (not totally certain if they are actually required though - Rose?).

Update

I've just checked through Joshua's posts (from Forefront, who have written the drivers) from a while back and support for the new Radeons are not guarenteed, although maybe an update will clear things up.
Don\\\'t panic - bite the towel.

Oh dear, winmodems are PANTS, better off getting a proper modem instead or better still, broadband if your able to. 8-)

You wouldn't want to use a controller-less modem.
Get one with a real controller (UART) rather than
strain the OS with a software solution.

Thanks for some of the replys guys.  It answered alot.  I know winmodems are a pain in the arse anyway.  I wonder if the new USR V.92 Hardware based PCI modems will work? I just have to wait and see an AmigaONE in action myself!  :-D

Registered ram is recommended, but some unregistered works as long as you are only using 1 stick.  If you want to use 2 sticks, registered is an absolute must (same with Pegasos).

A list of known working ram modules is being put together by the developers.

I think we can expect the Voodoo to work as there are exisiting PCI drivers to start from and it would be almost suicide to not have support for them.  Other cards (radeon etc) may follow in updates, especially 3D drivers.  Really, any VGA/SVGA/XVGA compliant card should work in 'normal' modes.

As for Hard Drive space, I don't think youll get close to using up those 2x6Gb in a hurry!

>1.Since OS4 will have virtual memory, will it be struggling like Windoze does?

IIRC, OS4 uses SWAP only for data and it will be possible for an application to reserve non-swappable memory for critical data. So, in theory, OS4+apps should fly always...

>2.Will the machine boot up as fast as a 68030/50mhz A1200 I have now?

Do you use OS3.9?
It takes at about 21 seconds to warm-boot it, right?
About 40 seconds to cold-boot it?
(so does my A4k/060)

I bet A1 with OS4 boots in about 10 seconds (warm and cold).

>3.Will my Voodoo 3 3000 AGP card work for OS4 out of the package?

I'm 99% sure.

>4.Can you run previous PPC software onto OS4, like a PPC application for OS3.9 onto a new G3 cpu and OS4?

Yes.

>5.How much space will AmigaONE take up to install.

You mean how much will OS4 take. I bet it will take less than 50 MB.

>6.Will I be able to use Winmodems, like my USR 56k PCI internal WinModem?

NO!    (at least not initially)

Hi! I don't know what people have against virtual memory. It's a good thing! It lets you run more stuff than your physical memory can handle. The problem comes when virtual memory is used in preference to physical memory. This is what Windows does. For a demonstration of a proper VM implementation see... umm... well, any other OS. :-)
