New 3D Drivers for AmigaOS 4.1: Warp3D for Southern Islands Graphics Cards
(http://a-eon.biz/images/warp3d.jpg)
A-EON Technology Ltd (http://www.a-eon.com) is pleased to announce that the first release candidate of RadeonHD Southern Islands Warp3D driver is now available to purchase and download from AMIStore (http://www.amistore.net) App Store.
Following our acquisition of the joint ownership of Warp3D, to complement our ongoing work with the driver for the Evergreen RadeonHD graphics card series, we commissioned AmigaOS graphics specialist Hans de Ruiter to create a Warp3D driver for the newer Southern Islands chipsets.
PDF News Release (click here) (http://www.a-eon.com/PDF/News_Release_Warp3D_SI.pdf)
(http://www.amistore.net/images/available_from_amistore.png) (http://www.amistore.net)
At the heart of the new Southern Island Warp3D driver is the W3D_SI.library which provides 3D graphics acceleration for selected Radeon HD 7xxx and Radeon Rx series graphics cards which include the Southern Islands Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). The driver has already gone through several iterations and has been put through its paces by a core group of dedicated AmigaOS 4 beta testers.
Warp3D-SI Features:
* Supports larger textures (up to 16384x16384 memory permitting).
* Performance is less dependent on resolution than previous drivers, including rendering at HD resolutions.
* Submits vertices to the GPU via vertex buffers rather than directly in the command stream (one of the bottlenecks of the old Radeon drivers).
* Uses the RadeonHD_RM.resource for VRAM allocation, providing more efficient memory management than own system.
* Accumulates small vertex arrays into larger buffers to provide faster performance where lots of tiny render operations are performed
* Doesn't lock the entire graphics system between
3D_LockHardware() / W3D_UnlockHardware(), so an
application or game crash is less likely to freeze the entire system
To complement the development Hans de Ruiter has also updated MiniGL and at the time of writing version 2.20 was ready for release on Warp3D.
New updated RadeonHD drivers are also being released to coincide with the update. Registered owners can
now download the new versions of 1.4 and 2.7 from AMIstore.
Warp3D RadeonHD Southern Islands Requirements:
An AmigaONE or AmigaOS 4.1 compatible computer with:-
* AmigaOS 4.1 “Final Edition”
* RadeonHD V1.4 or V2.7
* MiniGL - version 2.20 or later
Containing one of the following RadeonHD or Radeon Rx Southern Island graphics cards:
* Radeon HD 7750-7970 series graphics card (excluding the Radeon HD 7790)
* Radeon R7 250X/265 (excluding R7 250)
* Radeon R9 270/270X/280/280X
This version is the first Release Candidate (version 1.9).
With this release A-EON is once again pleased to re-affirm our commitment to providing new and progressive software for AmigaOS and towards our customers.
We would like to thank Hans De Ruiter for his work on this release.

from my post at aw.net:
thanks to Hans & A-Eon for every update as it's much appreciated and needed :pint: :-D
now for a simpleton like me does this mean we can now go back to using full warp3d instead of wazp3d??

Provided you have one of the listed video cards.

@thread
don't forget to update to the new minigl release if you haven't already (link (http://os4depot.net/?function=showfile&file=driver/graphics/minigl.lha)). i've been fortunate enough to beta test the new W3D software from hans. the wait has been worth it. :)

lucky you I've got a Radeon HD6850 and sadly this release is only for 7 series cards it appears:confused:

@klx300r
This is an A-EON Technology commissioned project. The brief was given to Hans de Ruiter to develop a 3D driver for the Southern Islands cards.
A-EON has also paid for second driver for Evergreen cards which cover the 5000 and 6000 series. This is still in development.

Well that is good news, a shame older systems are not getting any love. Would love to be able to use my 9800pro in 3d with my Peg2 board under OS4.
But it's great that Warp3D is finally getting some love. Will the OS3.x version also get some updates?
I have a 9200 on my Mediator which would like some support too.
-
Hi Lurch
I am very much wanting to get Warp3D updates organised for Classic. We hope to have some news when an agreement with a developer is confirmed.
Dont worry - it is not A-EON's intention to miss out Classic :)
-
That's good news then :-) Will stay watching, I'm guessing no luck for my Peg2?
-
@ amigakit
good news!
@ xeno74
:)
-
This is both good news and bad news, on one hand more redundant software becomes available (doors slightly ajar) = good news. On the other hand we are still waiting for Gallium - millions of software becomes available (doors wide open) = bad news.
-
Thanks and very cool. This made my day :)
-
Great news. Got it through Amistore.
Bought myself a RadeonHD R9 270X to celebrate.
-
@apsturk @ddniuk
Thank you to you both.

I've got a 9250 with 256MB in my 1200T waiting for a very long time for proper Warp3d;)

Extremely long time, and no answer about my poor Peg2. The question always gets a side stepped or ignored.
If they can provide support for classic they must be able to provide support for 9200/9800 on my peg2 under OS4.1.

@Lurch
the revision of open firmware used by the pegasos2 is unable to correct initialize radeonHD video cards, even using a PCIe-to-PCI adapter. so no radeonHD in the future for us unless someone convinced the bplan guys to help out.

Yep I know that, but that's not what I am asking. If they can support a 9200 on classic they must be able to do the same on the Peg2 with the 9800pro.
The 9800pro would be the fastest card for the Peg2.

ah. sorry about that. i misunderstood your question.

But if the firmware could be upgraded I'd be a happy man :-) Might just sell it, it doesn't get used at all at the moment and I can't see myself spending $1000's on X3500 etc. The Sam boards don't seem to be a real option either performance wise so meh.

Yeah, I bought and downloaded the Warp3D to go with the updated RadeonHD drivers a while back, but could not find the time to locate a single slot Radeon board that had the correct chip set (http://hdrlab.org.nz/projects/amiga-os-4-projects/radeonhd-driver/radeonhd-driver-hardware-compatibility/).
Finally I just ordered one on the list (VisionTek 7750) for an average price, received it today, plugged it in and booted my A1 X1000 into OS4.1 FE; as is not typical, I did nothing more and fired up QuakeII in miniGL mode and BOOM! Which is to say it worked beautifully. No need for changes in monitor setting, nothing else; it just works "out of the box." Crazy, right?
-
I took a chance on a pair of these a year ago.Would not work with my Sam440ep-flex and my Sam460ex was broken. Once My Sam460ex was replaced months later I was happy to find out that the cards worked.
I put them in storage and used a HD6670 on the Sam460ex as I expected to see Wardp3d support for the HD6670 first.So I was happy at the Warp3d-SI announcement.:)

I have a dumb question. If I buy this high end graphics card, for an X1000 Amiga, just what games are supported that make all this worthwhile?
Maybe you can tell I still use Motorola CPUed Amigas.
-
Better question: What makes any game worthwhile?
-
Actually for an X1000 or even an A1-500/Sam460ex with the Warps3D-SI driver a RadeonHD 7750 would be considered low end for 3D.When the Warp3D-NI (or whatever it will be called) driver is released then a Radeon HD5450 will be considerd low end for 3D on these machines .

-
Well, my criteria was a single slot board with a supported chip, so I agree it is low end, but everything in MY research with more oomph took up 2 slots. Needless to say I didn't burden the forums with questions Google could answer.
-
But, do any games exist to take advantage of it?
-
In Amiga OS 4.1 terms yes.
The Games that work with the older Amiga OS 4.1 machines and Radeon 7000 series and Radeon 9000 series cards and Warp3D now work on the newer machines with the Radeon HD 2D and 3D drivers with the supported Radeon HD SI cards. previously you had to use a Radeon 9200 series pci card in your X1000 for hardware 3D support.The results with the PCI card were not the best .
But, do any games exist to take advantage of it?
-
Could you please name some? Maybe not just games too, but serious software that needs this power.
-
Would this driver wok with a SAM460ex with a Graphics Card: Radeon HD 4650 1GB PCI-E?
-
@WeiXing3D
no. you'd need to upgrade to one of these:
* Radeon HD 7750-7970 series graphics card (excluding the Radeon HD 7790)
* Radeon R7 250X/265 (excluding R7 250)
* Radeon R9 270/270X/280/280X

There's quite a number of games both 3D and 2D that make use of the new Radeon drivers. Various ports by Huno and Amigasoft as well as various games from Cherry Darling and others.
Serious applications I can think of are Blender and Celestia.
