Yay!!! I couldn't carry the monitor so I'm gonna have to figure out a way to get some video output... you guys will help me out :)
How come I never find Amigas in bins?

Nice find, though I hope it's functional.

What do you think resulted in the eviction of the machine above ;)
If only someone round here would leave a Falcon 030 outside my place.
-
Great, you got yourself a bulky doorstop there. Even if you did hook video to it, good luck getting the floppy drive to do much of anything but diddle itself. BTW: I'd have gone back and snagged that monitor. Certainly gotta be more doors in the house, plus you wouldn't have to bugger about trying to get the thing to work with your TV or monitors.
IS this your very first ST? If so, can't wait to hear your thoughts on it after messing about a bit...
-
Nice.. Seeing as your in the U.K., this is probably a good option:
http://www.logicsays.com/atari/colour/docs/scart.htm
Being in the U.S. and not knowing about the missing "m" until after I found my 520STF, I have yet to see video on mine..
Not that I really feel bad about that..

I thought they used a regular RF cable output?

Hmmmm, it still has a Cubase disk in the floppy drive... I guess it reached the end of it's useful life :)

Actually I dread to think... probably an iMac :-/

Hmmm, I'd love a Falcon 030... but they are hen's teeth here also :(

This is 1040F, the 1040FM is the one with a TV modulator :)

I find those in the trash on the way home everyday.

Harsh ;)
We are at war with Apple now... Atari is the vanquished foe...
-
Well it has a double sided drive for sure and RGB SCART will work fine (or VGA for mono) but not composite out which is provided only on the FM too.

The more time passes, the more fondly I remember the old adversaries. We're slowly contracting into a dull monoculture as far as everyday computing goes. The days when there were dozens of different platforms all with their unique strengths and weaknesses seemed so vibrant in comparison.

Well, the plan would be to get a Video->Scart connector... then see what I can do about running AROS on it :-D

The best thing, I was on the way to the pub to see some friends... I turn up with an ST under my arm, I actually got a round of applause... my Girl Friend was all "What is that... what are you going to do with that... it's not coming in the house", I had to convince her that it was worth something... ;)
-
Here's the Video PinOuts for it's monitor connector, can't find the actual pinouts for the computer itself though... :)
Atari ST Video Pinout (http://pinouts.ru/Video/AtariStMonitor_pinout.shtml)
Dunno if this one will help any... :)

All good stuff, I'm thinking about making an AtariVideo->AmigaRGB convertor as I already have an AmigaRGB->Scart connector :)

And when you find the drive is shot, might want to have a look here:

We thought it's was bad: we were wrong!
It was nice and different!
Here in Italy I've got a quite popular retro-encyclopedia full of tests of home computers of the mid eighties!
What a variety! :)
...was nice... but here comes nostalgia also...
-
that damn special DIN connector is hard to find and somewhat expensive
(but, then, perhaps not as much as 23pin dsub..)
-
You lucky sod Matt! :)
We don't know if it works yet... But at the very least I now have a copy of the ST version of Cubase

Maybe you could use your ipad instead of a monitor? This shouldn't be a problem for the "holygrail of computers" ;)

Go back to the bin and look for the dongle!

I've got no iPad... I have no use for one  they aren't for serious computer users like me :)

There was no dongle (the original Atari Monitor was there, but I'm not dragging that home), no mouse either :(

The biggest Apple zealot on A.org hasn't even got an ipad - what a hypocrite! ;)

Shame the previous owner didn't throw the S-3000 it was connected to in the bin too. :(

I never was into Akais... I'm more of a Roland/Emu person... Not that I have much real hardware left anymore.. Damn you Arturia ;)
-
not much into hardware yet you collect an atari from a bin? a pair of bottles to get some change would be more reasonable. though it was some solid piece, simple beatuiful design, no damn psu hanging around, just power cord, good moody color, better than any wedge amiga ive seen except maybe for 600. close run.

Matt's no apple zealot. He has a perfectly reasonable approach to owning their stuff. A real zealot buys stuff purely because it's there and Mr. Jobbs tells them they need it, whether it's really useful or not.
Also, I don't recall the last time Matt posted anything resembling a one-line bit of pro-apple trollbait on how some article cited their latest toy as the greatest thing ever.
-
Sorry Karlos you have given me a lot to think about :hammer:
I always thought it was one way or the other with Apple. Completely obsessed with anything Apple or simply confused about all things Apple.

Indeed, the title of most devout Apple zealot on a.org belongs to anyone who tells you it's your own fault that Apple knowingly sold you broken hardware!

Ah I see. I think I have a 1040FM in the loft which is why I was sure it used RF

I probably did transfer a bit of my Amiga love to Apple... But I'm generally quite positive about most technology now, and with windows7 even MicroSoft have got their OS act together (though when I tried it, I am so used to XP and OSX that I couldn't find anything), in fact Windows7 is basically your only real option if you want to play desktop computer games.
If fact there are two things that REALLY P*SS ME OFF about apple, but since these topic quite rightly don't show up on A.org you never see them :) Since this is my thread I will take a moment to mention them:
CoreGraphic API, it's a pretty good graphics framework... Which abstracts the concepts and keeps a format and hardware agnostic view of the world... I'll even overlook the fact it has no getPixel()/setPixel() functions, the concept of the pixel is very specific and CG is higher level than that... What really winds me up is that the origin is in the bottom left corner... Despite the rest of the system having the origin in the proper place (Top Left)... I spent days trying to figure out that "bug". There is no excuse for this and I'm not happy about it. :(
The second point is more general... 4 years ago I was pretty convinced we would all be using SSDs in our computers by now, you will probably find me saying something like that on this very forum if you search my past posts... But as of today all my laptops have WeaternDigital 500GB to 750GB hard drives in them!?!? What gives? One word, Apple... Since they pay upfront for entire production runs of Flash chips, the rest of the world has to wait. So SSDs of any decent size are both rare and expensive, which means less people buy them which means less are made which means they stay rare and expensive... I'm not happy about that.
-edit- actually, I have another annoyance with apple... Single user accounts in iOS, I know the average iPhone/iPad user would be totally confused by the concept of a "user account"... But there are times when I give my iPhone to someone to play on an App, and it would be nice to not give them access to my Email/phone/pr0n stash... :-/

That my be true but it's only half of it. I think i read a couple of years ago an argument about using SSDs instead of conventional HDs. The cons are faster load times of big apps like the os itself. But they also said SSDs would be unreliable in the long run as they wear out quicker than a normal hd. My windows 7 loads up after about 45-60 seconds and i think it would be way cool to see it load faster.
Maybe fantasizing too much but as i write this i see my 4gb memory stick in my laptop. Why would it be so hard to put one of these preinstalled in new pcs and use it as a kind of SSD and maybe using a conventional hd alongside it for bigger stuff? I don't get how SSDs cost hundreds of dollars when i can buy a generic usb stick for $5.

Interesting point on SSD's.
I'm a bit disappointed with SSD tech so far tbh, my macbook air has one and its not that speedy, capacity is a real problem too, when you have a dual boot OSX-Win7 system.
I dont get the anti-apple vibe on here?

I didn't know they were available on laptops :)
Maybe you could tell me how much faster a SSD is when inside a pc :)
What capacity is it? And what is it used for? :)

Nice find, though I hope it's functional.
What do you think resulted in the eviction of the machine above ;)
If only someone round here would leave a Falcon 030 outside my place.
No doubt, a Falcon or TT would be the bomb!!!
So is this an ST or STe? If it's an STe you can play Pac Man on E's which was by far one of the best Pac Man clones ever!

I think it's more a case of anti-cult mentality rather than anti-Apple.
I like OSX for the most part, it gets on my nerves in many ways though, as do Linux and Amiga OS and I also like them.

Should have left it in the bin...:D

Well, we are all part of a cult or two, it's just when a cult gets big enough we give it a different name. :)
Cult of the Amiga for the win

I can't really think of any modern OS that really bugs me, I would probably get on just fin with Win7, once I figure out where everything is. Hopefully it won't come to that, fingers crossed Lion will be suitable for everything I do :)
Back on topic... Anyone know where I can find a bloody 13pin din plug? :(
-
13 pins?! Wow... Are all pins used? I.e., could you get away with a 7- or 8-pin one (assuming the pins physically match up and all that)?

Hi,
Just buy a 25 pin and cut the last two pins off vertically but first before you cut hold the plug up to the Amiga like you were going to plug it in, then do the cuttin on the right side.

There have been stories of people finding decent Amiga equipment in the trash - I wonder how much hasn't been saved - I rescued some using the freecycle yahoo groups some years back.
As for the Atari, the best one ever made was an 800XL followed by the 130XE. ST - should have left it where it belonged ;)
-
I finally got my atari up and running YAY!
I guess going back and picking up the monitor was the best way to go :)

I never was into Akais... I'm more of a Roland/Emu person... Not that I have much real hardware left anymore.. Damn you Arturia ;)
I picked up a Roland S-760, A Pioneer 6 stack SCSI CD-ROM drive and the 6 CD library of sounds from Roland for $200, $5 and $100 respectively. I used that for quite a while and then decided to move to Kontakt.
-
while i'm here can anyone help me with cables and othe atari stuff? I know you guys will help me out :)
-
That was pretty surreal :)

Oh great. Now i'm talking to myself.

my love of the atari st was based on superficial things. the way it looked. i prefered it to amiga. i liked the design.

i had a bass player friend who picked out an amp from a skip. i wouldn't want to turn anything on like that without a power breaker. it could have been out in the rain all night...

Atari forever. it's just an amiga without the custom chips, a crappy OS and 20% (?) faster 68k. not as good as the amiga 6/500, but then the A1200 is not as good as the Atari Falcon - so there. :P

Nice. I'm still looking for the original Roland sound CD-ROMs for the S-7x0 series...
If there's an app like Kontakt for the iPad.. that might be a good reason to get an iPad.. (the Korg apps look cool).

Maybe not in the sound dept, but in the resolution, colour depth, and bit bandwidth for memory (Falcon 16bit STE bus, A1200 32bit Fast Ram via trapdoor) it IS superior so there :P

reichelt.de (http://www.reichelt.de/Diodenstecker-Mini-Din/SE-DIO-13/index.html?;ACTION=3;LA=2;ARTICLE=17452;GROUPID=3240) has those DIN plugs for .72€.
If you're not in a haste I can include one on our next order (postage to UK would be something like 3.50€ though...).

She STILL asks me every week or so if I can "chuck out that grey lump"...
The correct answer is "Yes I can but I'm not going to."
I never owned an Atari myself, bit poor as I used to work for them. Anyway, good find.
As for Apple, I learnt DVD authoring on a Spruce Maestro system, a company later bought out by Apple and then buried just so they could remove competition to their own DVD solutions. Not a nice business practice, I was rather annoyed at the time. The funny thing is, now it's easy to find a DVD Maestro torrent and it's still an awesome authoring tool. Guess I should be happy about it after all.
