Shogo not working
« on: July 08, 2010, 09:54:53 AM »
Hi all. I've recently acquired a few (original) games from ebay that utilise the PPC processor (see signature). I cant get any of them to work except Wipeout :) I have spent a sh*tload of time configuring cybergraphx, warp3d and warpos so I sort of know for sure I have the right versions of each. (Could be a config error though). Im trying to run it under OS3.9 btw.

Lets focus on Shogo first, it installed fine, the launcher works, but everytime I click Launch Shogo (even with lowest settings possible) nothing happens. When WINDOW: NIL is toggled the output reads:

client: bad loadfile hunk

(the first time I installed it it threw a different message, but never mind that)

Any ideas? :)

I've looked around for patches but I only found one that fixes some issues with missing soundfiles during install. Were there any patches released?

Have you tried setting your RAM to 70ns?
IIRC Hyperion advise that for almost all their game ports.

Make sure you remove ppc.library from memory (bppcfix and bppcfixfix).

well, setting my RAM to 70ns didnt help. And Thomas, Im running bppcfix already, there is no need for bppcfixfix since all it does is enable the user to reload ppc.library. Unless you think Im mistaken here?

Any other ideas? Please, I really need to play this game after all those years.. :)

Is it just a Shogo problem, do other Warp games/programs work?
(I run it via Voodoo3/P96 with some crash problems so my dirty solution was to find the PC version and finish the game there - naughty me...)

Yeah everything works great. getting really high fps in quake and wipeout runs fine aswell.

There is something odd though, in the shogo main dir there are 2 files that cannot be displayed by diropus, both 0 bytes large. also, the first time I installed Shogo, I selected the 604/240mhz+loads of memory option at the end of the installation. I didnt quite understand this question anyway. But the game didnt start, it said 'client: file is not executable'. So... I thought I had chosen the wrong option and I installed a second time, this time selecting 603/160mhz+040.

wait, wait, there is more. the first time I launched the game (on both installs) I could select the quality setting for the game. after selecting, nothing ever happened. this question never returned.

I installed the demo from Aminet, which works fine. So I copied the client exe from the demo to the main dir of the full game. It now starts, but whenever I start a new game, it gives a message 'unable to load level'. Quite annoying! It must for sure be that client exe file, how big should it be? My original file is 1198576 bytes in size, the one from the demo is 1198260.

BTW, the game (demo) runs better than I expected, 800x600 seems okay with medium detail, while in 640x480 high detail is playable.

ahem, time for another monologue!

shogo still isnt working, but at least Ive got wipeout and heretic II running fine now. H2 surprised me, I expected it to be a lot slower. its even possible to play it in 800x600, getting around 15fps that way (Im used to that). great effort by hyperion!

..too bad it has artifacts with warp3d hwdriver below version v4.2 though. since Wipeout is having artifacts with anything higher than 4.0.. :D Guess I have to write a script that makes sure correct libraries are loaded.

Thanks for your reply CLS2086, was starting to feel lonely here.. :) Can you tell me how big in bytes your client file is? I think this file is the one that's causing all the trouble. I've increased stack until 1,5mb, should be more than enough.

Its still not working.. Now, bad loadfile hunk, does this have something to do with my memory not being available in large enough chunks? If so, what can I do about it? Ive tried everything, from setting ram speed to 70ns, to booting with no ss: and lots of other stuff. Ive tried installing the game to a partition below the first 4GB, tried copying client file over from the Aminet demo, tried install with both 603 and 604 icon tooltypes (installer asks about this)..

Lost for ideas! Dya reckon Hyperion is still offering support for Shogo and Heretic II? :)

Finally found the solution: I entered the wrong registration code. The guy I bought the game from wrote it on the disc itself with a marker. It was hardly readable'. I've now entered a pirate key (yeah, boo-hoo) and the game finally works. Im a bit annoyed by Hyperion though: something this critical should have been mentioned in the manual, during install and in the FAQ on their website. I got no response on my e-mail to them either.
