By the way, Mr Nutz is out on the Amiga............I have it and it play very very well and dare i say it goes as fast as Sonic. Try running all the way to the end of the level and jump. He flies and even turns into a ball like Sonic................nevertheless, this game still lacks in the FULL SCREEN department..........boy does that anger me!.............................You know.its not that the Amiga can not do these games.............it can!  but since developers always made games to run on 1 meg........so that they have a larger audience.......the game had to be cut down to run on 1 meg.............but the Amiga has proven that it can do it.......Look at Super Street Fighetr 2 TURBO (The one from GameTek) it looks better than the Super Nintendo version.....BUT, because it had to run on the 2megs that a CD32 provides......some frames were thrown out and sound was downgraded...........had it required 2 megs chip and 4 megs fast, it would have blown away even the PS2 version. Also games like Ruff N Tumble show great amounts fo color.....but again requiring only 1 meg, sacraficed frames per second (The game is not that smooth)

As for Superfrog..............it runs very smooth and as fast as Sonic ( when you get the Speed powerup) but since the character is so less animated and smaller and no moving backgrounds....it can't be compared. I think Zool 1 and Mr Nutz and Ruf N Tumble are the only ones that can compare. Zool 2 looked better than Zool 1 but the character, though looked better, seemed to lack frames and didnt run as fast as Zool 1.

But also theres lots of games that looked better and ran better than their SNES counterparts........for instance:

Another World (Out of this World) (slower on SNES)
Flashback (slower framerate on SNES)
Pinball Fantasies (This game sucked BIGTIME on SNES)
Chaos Engine (Soldiers of Fortune on SNES)
Gods (Boy did they ruin this one.they just speeded it up)
as well as others
CD32 is actually the best Amiga ever made by Commodore!...

You forget the Amiga version of Mortal Kombat, wich is much better than the SNES version. It outperforms the SNES version both with detail and framerate. Controls of the SNES are better though.

Wow, I didn't know Mr.Nutz was on Amiga. Was it AGA?

I don't think Mr.Nutz or Super Streetfighter were downgraded because
of ChipRAM being 1mb or 2mb. The Megadrive/NeoGeo only had about 64k
of VRAM to play with and most was loaded off carts.

For example, the sublime Super Streetfighter 2 on Megadrive was
40Mbits, the average A1200 could have loaded 40% of the entire cart
into RAM without inter-screen loading!

I remember seeing Streetfighter 2 on an A500 and the framerate was
ghastly, what was Super Streetfighter 2 AGA like?

I thought Chaos Engine had a dodgy framerate but it was pretty
playable. Mortal Kombat 2 (AGA?) was a good one but the disk-swapping
was a nuisance.

Worms was definately better on Amiga than the 16-Bit consoles, as are
most point & click games.

What I found interesting with the Megadrive was that it had a maximum
of 64 colours onscreen so on Ranger-X they did a HAM or
double-halfbrite routine to get up to 256. Also Alien Vs Predator on
Jaguar used HAM at the expense of framerate.

Can I just reccomend Master System emulator AmiMasterGear one more
time? It is freeware now and 8-Bit Sonic 1 has more playability than
the best Amiga platform games in my opinion.

@Speel

No way!  the Amiga version sucked dude..........the only thing it had going was that it had the blood unlike the SNES version which didnt.  the Amiga version was even worse than the Sega Genesis one. Mortal Kombat II was slightly better but still sucked due to lack of moving backgrounds and lack of good quality sound.............alot was missing.

@ Hyperspeed

Want proof that what I say is true?  that StreetFighter could definitely have been better was there more RAM?  Simply get the Game called "Fightin Spirit"  it is AGA only..............(the game will load on ECS Amigas upto the Character selection and intro screens)

This game does justice to prove Amigas can do it...........despite the fact that the artists arent as professional as the japanese artists.it still shows clearly what is possible.............get the Game Now..........its on Back to the Roots and you have to boot it in PAL mode.

the Cartidge disscusion is not an issue because it acts as ram on a console, so it doesnt need to load. it just runns straight from cartridge.

I disagree Leirbag28!

Both Mortal Kombat's on Amiga were damn good!

:-)

The Megadrive(/Genesis) version had crackly sound and the SNES one had
no blood.

The Amiga one had crisp graphics, clear sound and blood! Mortal Kombat
2 on Megadrive(/Genesis) was so ugly they had to do an update for the
32x expanion!

:-D

You're right about dedicated Amiga fighters though, Elfmania, Shadow
Fighter etc. had some superb 256-colour graphics, lighting effects
etc. I'd say they were NeoGeo quality if lacking in the fluid
animation department.

The most fun I had for Amiga fighting games was some IK+ clone on
Aminet, you punched someone between the legs and the sample was
hilarious!

:-)

Body Blows Galactic was reasonable, but I would say Mortal Kombat 2
via WHDLoad would be the one I'd pick from them.

I think even with cartridges you have to get the data off the cart and
into memory to be able to manipulate it. The Megadrive/(Genesis)
version had cracklier sound for Streetfighter 2 than the SNES one but
they kept all the animation and infact I think the Megadrive one was
smoother and more accurate to the arcade (especially with the 6-button
pad).

It would be interesting to see if any PPC users have run NeoGeo
fighters on Amiga MAME. I think Garu: Mark of the Wolves would need
70Mbytes of RAM (550mbits)!

:-o :-o :-o

I'm just giving opinions here though, you seem to have played a lot
more games than me for Amiga so I will take your advice and scope out
the rest of the fighters.

:-D :-D :-D ;-)

nonono
I played it on both systems. On the SNES (Yup the "SUPER" NES) it had hardly any background at all, while the Amiga version did have a fairly well detailed background.
And as far as I know, the Amiga and the Megadrive/Genesis version of it were the same (just have seen a glimpse of the Megadrive version, while I played it thoroughly on both the SNES and Amiga).
The only thing that sucked about the Amiga version was the endless diskjuggling and loading times.

Just got to chcuk in my 2 pence worth. Even how much i love the amiga, the best platform game i have played of all time, and still play every now and again, was yoshis island on the snes, not the the crappy yoshis story on n64, but yohis island -  super mario world 2 on the snes, that game had everything, cartonn like graphics, gr8 gameplay etc etc, it always bugged me, that the amiga could eassily do games of this quality, yet none ever cam close

Yeah that was a classic.

I also thought the Donkey Kong Country games on SNES were extremely
pretty, but their GFX were pre-rendered on special Silicon Graphics
machines. A lot of investment went into making those games and as such
could only have been profitable with a 30m userbase.

Amigas sold on 6m worldwide and most of the money went into hardware
upgrades, productivity etc. When the average games costs £30 and an
accelerator in 1996 cost £600 you can see that consoles are a more
streamlined platform to make money on for the game publishers.

Incidentally Rare sold out to Microsoft a year or so ago for half a
billion dollars.

:-o :-o

I've just written in another thread what a good idea selling old
games would be. Much as I hate UAE I see it as a similar scenario to
how much Sony hated MP3.

Along came Apple iTunes and they made a fortune. Did Apple Mac have as
many good games as Amiga? NO!

Could Amiga Inc. start selling ADFs of old Amiga games? YES!

:-) :-)

I hope Amiga Inc. think of this quickly, it could be a money-spinner
to get them on their feet and get valuable limelight for the AmigaOne
platform.

Actually, it's kind of a horrible idea.  Who wants to buy their old games back again?  Especially when they are already legally free for personal use from BTTR.

Plus you're comparing selling current music that has clear copyright ownership with selling obsolete video games who's manufacturers and distributors went out of business 10 years ago....

And how does this make any money for Amiga?  They don't own the rights to make these compilations!  You're overloading my illogical statement processing abilities.

Okay...

Sega has just started selling their old Megadrive(/Genesis) ROMs
because people want to buy the old games for use on emulators. They
can get an old game for just 10p. The advantages being:

1) No idiots have altered the ROM code (the type who found All Your
Base in ZeroWing for example)

2) You own the ROM legally and it's so cheap it makes downloading it
illegally pointless

3) The ROM file will help Sega produce new games

4) You can guarantee getting it from them unlike from a file-sharer

...

There's a lot of companies out there that don't want people putting
their software onto compilations. I'm sure I've heard of one Amiga
house that didn't like it - possibly Gremlin or Bitmap Brothers.

Why should people buying legitimate goods on eBay be sneered at by
emulator-boys who download their `l33t waRez' from Bit Torrent or
whatever.

...

How would Amiga Inc. make money from selling ADFs? How do Apple make
money from selling songs that don't belong to them!

Commission!

You pay a company a percentage of what you make, even endorse a
particular emulator. I scratch your back, you scratch mine. The market
for Retro/Nostalgia is huge and the bandwagon needs to be jumped on.

See the Amiga.org news and it says the Commodore brand (Tulip
Computers?) is to start selling MP3s.

:-D :-)

Now... I've seen people talking of using Holywood on laptops to
impress their Powerpoint owning friends - that's really cool. But I'm
not into the argument that WareZ is Cool.

If I bought a game on eBay I don't want someone to be able to get an
ADF for free.

...

So Ner!

Hey don't put the SNES that down, it have only 3.58MHz CPU and it's something like 6502 on steroids (16-bit custom 65C816) with much poorer instruction set than the 68000. The strong points about it are the graphic chips (more powerful than the blitter and the copper - i.e. it easily does rotations/zooms which are exploited in almost every SNES game), multiple playfileds (only dual hardware defined in the Amiga), and it have 16BIT! sound chip done by SONY, but I like more the old Paula mods. These SNES musics sound too synthetical - like MIDI songs, grrrr. I hate MIDI songs. But the Super Turrican songs on the SNES sound exactly the same as on the Amiga Turrican 3. Probably it uses ported TFMX replayer.

I think even with cartridges you have to get the data off the cart and into memory to be able to manipulate it

But the code can be in the ROM, and you need the RAM only for variables storage and/or uncompressing data, which have to be sent to the video or the sound devices. The Amiga programs/data must always be stored in the RAM (excluded are the ROM routines - Kickstart). And you need code for loading/decompressing to the RAM, not to mention the protection, which is not present in the cartridges. And on the SNES if you run under 6502 emulation you will waste 8 bits for instruction, compared to 16 bits (2 bytes) on the 68000.

As for the Mr. Nutz - he is still alive. I spotted him on the GameBoy Advanced.

Not played Kid Chaos yet but I vote for Super Frog: nice graphics & music and it is really relaxing to play unlike Sonic the Headhog (too fast for me)... and the athmosphere beats Super Mario games.

I liked it 10 years ago and I like now.

Fire+Ice is also pretty nice. CD32 version (atleast) has got really sympathetic music... but I think that the game is too hard for me.

Many Sega Megadrive platform games are also very enjoyable and include "Amiga style" graphics: I love Quackshot and Mickey Mania though bought my first Megadrive/console this summer  :-D
