File listers view
« on: November 27, 2009, 11:04:04 AM »
Does anyone know any patch that can change the way that file listers in a window show files? That could change the filename colours, background or any of them?

Assuming you mean viewing files in their list view (as opposed to icon view), then the colours are taken straight from your palette. Changing them without changing the palette (and as a consequence everything else) is a bit fiddly. You could always try a workbench replacement like Magellan or Scalos, however.

At least this issue is addressed in OS4.x, which allows rather more customisation of the list view. Pity you can't turn off the small icon preview in the lister - one reason I use list views in the first place is for speed and that seems to slow it down slightly.

Yes...you got it. I am talking about viewing files in their list view. Scalos and Magellan it's a total replacement of workbench, something that I don't want to do. But, I would like to have those lists with different colors in every row and different color in files against directories. I was just curious if there was a patch that I missed. Maybe, someone great coder could make it happen, like the coder of AfaOS.

Can you find any satisfaction with the many free directory utilities available for Amiga, like Directory opus 4.xx, Ordering, Disk Master, etc?  Maybe I misunderstand what you are after.

I understand what you mean here, but unfortunately there's currently no way to customise the look of File View in Workbench windows at all. They can't even use a WBPattern, so you couldn't simply save a striped pattern as your Window pattern to use in File mode. I guess it would be possible for someone to write a patch, and if they could I would use it for sure. Directory Opus Magellan doesn't even allow any special colour lines for files, but it does allow you to choose the one colour for all files and all directories. Just no pattern, to help with readablity. I haven't got much experience with Scalos, so I don't know if it has this feature.

I'd like it if File View mode allowed a colour pattern, like one line white, the next like light blue, then white again. It's like this in Linux, and it helps with readability.

I'd love to write a Workbench lister program some day. Something that doesn't require a full Workbench replacement, but gives you better file lister windows, similar to Magellan crossed with Linux's Nautilus.
