Title: Linux Mandrake 9.0 WOW!
Post by: iamaboringperson on February 15, 2003, 08:38:01 PM
wow! i just upgraded from mandrake 8.2(or 8.1 i cant remember) to 9.0, and i must say this is bloody good stuff indeed!

i try different versions of linux occasionaly & even *BSD, but when i first used mandrake a few years ago i fell in love!

mandrake 9.0 is A LOT better than i expected!
usually when you upgrade an OS, its a bit more bloated, a bit slower, and doesnt add all that much that is worthy of it being an upgrade
but mandrake 9.0 was different
it installed very quickly(from 2 CDs) without a problem, it booted very quickly, much quicker than the previous version, and just about every thing seemed faster
KDE 3.0 was new for me, before i used it i thought it would be bloated & slow, but it was actually very fast! my computer almost seems like a whole new machine
you know if you have a very small amount of ram, you get that disk 'thrashing' when the machine is constantly swapping pages of memory in & out? well upgrading to mandrake 9.0 was almost like adding more ram! my HDD is so silent now, ive yet to checkout the memory usage but it seems to be swapping a lot less now, probably not ALL due to KDE however
there were a few new features/programs that i liked, plus some things changed that i didnt like, but i suppose youve got to take the good with the bad
one thing i really like is the Mandrake Control Center - this makes so many things much easier to configure, including the screen resolution
this upgrade has fixed so many problems ive had before, so many errors and crashes that i dont have now

for anyone wanting to try linux i would definently reccomend mandrake 9.0 to anyone
if you already use linux, try it now!
its really good stuff

 :-)

I've tried madrake a few times since version 7 to 8.2, but never liked it, I've used Suse 5.2 and 7.3. I've been using RedHat 8.0 with apt-get installed for 3 or 4 weeks now since i decided to get rid of my "aquired" copy of windows xp for good. I must say it's very good once you installed apt/mp3/divx/dvd/nvidia drivers/Mozilla Xft/UADE for XMMS/Bastille. Reminds me of using my Amiga all those years ago. Can't put my finger on why though? Maybe it's because GNOME 2 is more responsive than the bloated KDE 3.

I done that too.  It looks great at first tho but then you find out that most of the good stuff has been removed and it all went downhill for me.

I tried to get IRC working (e.g Xchat) but with no luck.  Then I tried to get my graphics card working but it says it's not connected and it uses the default GeForce driver (which is slow).  Updating it made no difference.

I was not impressed and reverted back to 8.1....but will probably go over to RedHats latest version for better support.

Same here. I use Mandrake 9.0 at home and at werk. On my home machine I upgraded (a while back) from 8.1 and on my werk machine I upgraded (last week) from 8.2.  On my home machine it seems slightly faster, but at werk the improvement is massive.  It loads in less than half the time now.

I started using Mandrake over a year ago because I was told by an expert that it was good for linux newbies and at the time I was just that.  And I'm still using it now because it's grown on me like a rash.  It's all itchy and I love it...

see ive been using various versions of linux for years, especialy redhat, but mandrake was the first to work with my LAN card, so i stuck with it and loved it
red hat doesnt work for my machine BTW

I have to say that doesn't sound like Mandrake 9.0 to me. I'm not sure what "good stuff" has been removed, or why your xchat and drivers don't work properly, but they work fine here, and I'd say it's a considerable improvement over the 8.x versions. Certainly it is easier to manage than the older versions.

In fact I'd say that it's Red Hat who have been stripping lots of good stuff out of their distros.

What makes this an on-topic thread when others aren't? Who cares for Linux?

I did a clean install of RedHat 8 on my C3 machine a week ago.  I couldn't get a stable system until I disabled Redhat's update notification tool.   I almost went back to SuSE7.3.  But, all seems to be ok now.

I'm currently running RH8.0 as my first fully functional Linux setup (have tried other distro's over time,  but never got them setup proberly.)

So i'm curios, if mandrake9 is better than RH8.   i've gotten used to linux now, so i'm interested in the better distro.  even so much that i have considered byolinux.org.

Any pointers i need?

Yeah, I did read the topic of the forum - a Linux worshipping thread with about as much relevance on an Amiga website as a Ford Escort worshipping thread.

I wonder what the forum for "Alternative Operating Systems" is really for.

I've tried RH 8.0, found it far too buggy and went back to RH 7.3.  I'm more then happy with RH 7.3 and the RHNetwork update system.

Refer to http://www.distrowatch.com/top.php?1
for other Linux distributions.

I do like "Lycoris Amethyst2" for its closeness to WindowsXP desktop.

PS; In http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/future.php3
Mandrake has problem with cash flow for creating the next version.

i have red hat 8 on my laptop at the moment but i've just (like 3 days ago!) been told to try this new mandrake! so it's a VERY relavant topic for me! :-o

i'd be very interested in any reports about  ftp://mandrake.redbox.cz/Mandrake-iso/i586 (http://mandrake 9 beta3)

and linux is important to anyone who doesn't want to be stuck with windows! plus, with the limited experience I have with it, i have found it to be fun. i never find windows fun. i just have to use it for some stuff. as soon as i get this whole linux thing settled, i'm putting WinUAE and then i'll have my amiga again.

plus, linux is on amigaOne's and i hope they always are. there are interesting programs for linux that would be cool to have WITH an amiga!
on the same machine!

I've just been told about
http://heroinewarrior.com/cinelerra.php3 (http://Cinelerra)

looks very cool! :-D

Yep got mandrake 9.0 myself.... was really suprised how improved it was from previous versions. Install went quick and smoothly, supported all my hardware out of the box.

Ontop... seems rock solid.. not crashed a single time since i installed it... at the moment its been up for 32 days, and is used pretty much all day.

Was way more quick to install and easier than installing windoze ;)

Then the forums would be totally dead... There is not much new to discuss about the amiga anymore...

Personally i think its kinda sad that the off-topic discussion is not shown on the front side  :-(

Im too lazy check out the topic manually every time...

So far, it seems like Redhate 8 is the easiest one to install with minimum fuss, however, the problem I find with a lot of distros is that they throw on so much crap software just because it's "free".  I don't know about most of you, but I don't need 10 different e-mail programs, plus 15 different clones of minesweeper, and 20 different methods of changing my network settings.
They try to make it easier by including more, but they end up just making it more difficult.

They have a good new email client i.e. Evolution…

Just don't install unneeded junk applications....

Have any of you guys ever tried Debian? I think it's the best Linux dist by far. I have never tried Mandrake though but I think Red Hat has to much magic going on, auto-detection of hardware and that kind of stuff (which have crashed on me more than one time).

Debian might seem a bit hard in the beginning compared to Red Hat and those other dists that wants to attract Windows users  :-D but once you get used to it it's lovely  :-)

I've had a set of Mdk9.0 CDs sitting 'round here for a couple of weeks, but hadn't found the impetus to install it. Since reading your original post I decided to give it a try.
Installation was painless, with both NICs (RTL8029 for Amithlon & onboard Broadcom) being found as well as both sound outputs. (AC97 & SBLive!)

So far I haven't managed to make the networking work on either interface, even using the same settings as under Mdk7.1 that I'm using now. Mdk7.1 happily sees the rest of the internet through cat5 cable running to the Amiga which plays gateway under MiamiDX.

I also can't manage to get any sound from 9.0, but that's rather low on the list for the moment.

I do like what they've done with the latest KDE, but some of the functionality I'm used to under 7.1 has either been removed or replaced where I can't find it at all. All up, I'm not totally satisfied with the install, but I'll play with it for a couple of weeks before totally dismissing it.

I've used redhat 7.2/7.3/8.0 gentoo, suse and mandrake and for me mandrake comes out on top everytime.

It has loads of preconfigured window managers like blackbox and friends...

If anyone is new to linux then I'd definitely recommend mandrake, as most of the config can be performed through guis.

I'm using Mandrake 9.0 on my old PII 266 laptop.

'cos it has so little memory (64MB) I am using Blackbox as the window manager... which is actually quite neat and certainly doesn't use the resources that KDE or Gnome2 would. I will stick with it even when the memory upgrade arrives for the laptop.

It found my Xircom PCMCIA ethernet card without a problem though, and networking works great. Audio, however, doesn't work at all. Booting takes ages, but that is probably due to the useless old laptop hard drive than anything else.

I have also used SUSE 8, which is also a very solid distribution.

One day I will upgrade this 18 month old install of Mandrake 8.1 to something else ... possibly Mandrake 9.1 which should be out soon.
