Title: Getting the A online...
Post by: on March 05, 2003, 07:10:48 PM
Multi-part question.  I have an A500 (OS 3.1, A501, A590, ECS Chipset).  I have old terminal software (Termite, NOT Termite TCP, as well as Diga).  I plan to upgrade this machine with a Viper 520 soon, but ultimately I want to get online with my Amiga.  Is this possible with an A500? For that matter, how does one get online with an A1200 or 4000? Miami, A-Web, Voyager and all that I'm aware of.  How do you get around the lack of ISPs? These days I can't even come up with a number to dial on Termite! Any help would be greatly appreciated. :-)

Well, you'll need a modem and a tcp/ip stack.

ISPs aren't really a problem as long as they provide: a dial in number, a username and a password.  You might need to a dial-in script, but that mostly configures itself on first go.

In the uk, there are loads of isps that you can try: you don't have to run those awful CD giveaways.

I don't think any browsers will run on it very well with just the 68000.  I remember going on line with my a600 using a browser called webview from aminet. It worked but it wasn't worth the time  :-(

Alynx from Aminet should work, but no pictures! (among other things) You may be able to run a more modern browser if you watch TV and make sandwiches in the kitchen at the same time. (http:// http://home.hawaii.rr.com/kihoalu/images/biggrin.gif)

With Viper 020 33mhz + 8mb ram some kind of webbrowsing would even be possible:)

Get online to do what? Your reference to terminal software would imply bbs, shell stuff etc.

lack of ISPs?

In what respect are you refering to? Again what are your objectives?

I'm not sure you are answering his question.
I would think he can run a web browser on the
A500. IBrowse seems to be about the best out right now.
And with 4 to 8 megs ram I would think it should be
exceptable (thats only my guess) and with an
020 @ 33mhz it should run fine.
I am using Termite 1.22. It doesn't have the SSL lib
but thats ok, I just don't do any credit card biz
with it.

All you can do is try it ... see what happens.

You need a few things
TCP/IP Stack.
Browser.
Email Client.
A Modem.
and a ISP other than AOL or MSN they run proprietery software.
You can get online with the basic Internet software that comes with OS 3.9, or you can purchase NetConnectIII CD it comes with a comprehensive list of Internet software for your Amiga.
try www.thelist.com for a list of ISP's in your area. You don't need one that supports the Amiga all you need is one that lets you run your own software.

Amiga TCP/IP stacks include Genesis,Termite TCP,Miami,Miami Deluxe, The only one still available for retail purchase is Genesis

Browsers include Ibrowse,Voyager,AWEB

Email clients can be brought or downloaded for free Yam is agood example of a freeware Email client

I use Verizon DSL as my ISP.
For DSL or cable modems you will need an Ethernet card for your Amiga. to get one for your Amiga500 might be expensive you will need a ZorroII LAN Card and a slingshot or any other Zorro Expansion bus made for an A500.

Any Amiga with a graphics card would be better for internet surfing.

I use a Towered Amiga1200 with 060/PPC,193 Megs of RAM ,MediatorSX,Voodoo3 Graphics card,10/100 LAN card,Spider USB2.0 Card,Haupauge Win TV Card,ABIT AU10 Sound Card,Yamaha2100S CDRW, Pioneer DVD player,Wireless Keyboard and Mouse,19 inch Sceptre LCD Monitor.

I use my Amiga for surfing the net more than my PC.

AWEB and Voyager still print better than IE and Netscape on my PC. On my PC the right 1/4 of the screen always gets chopped OFF.

Well, depending on where you live....

In the UK, there is an ISP that can send you a set of floppies with "netconnect light."  That should have everything you need to get online, but the software is not registered.

Personally, I would suggest Miami (regular), and downloading an older browser.  I would try to pick up the AminetCD with the "special edition" of IBrowse1.2.  Then try to get an older version of YAM for email.  With that you should be good to go.

I agree with most ofwhat you say....
except "Ibrowse 1.2" . I was running "IB1.2"  on my
A3k 25mhz. and it was slower than MUD I am
using the IB2.1 demo version now until I get updated
to the new IB2.3 ver.
IB1.2 sucks -- stay away from it.
