AIAB out, AmiKit | AmiSYS | classicwb in?
« on: November 27, 2007, 06:26:49 PM »
For years, Amiga In A Box (AIAB) was the one-stop download for setting up an Amiga emulation. However, it does not seem to be available anymore (or I am not looking in the right places).

The latest references are to AmiKit, AmiSYS, and classicwb. Do these do what AIBB used to?

I can only talk about Amikit as not tried thee others.  But it does what AIBB does but like 200% more.   Think top spec amiga workbench and programs and thats Amikit.

Give it a go, you will not be dissapointed.  Infact I would say you will prob be amazed

Though you do need an original os3.5 or 3.9 cd, or amiga forever as Amikt needs some copyrrighted files

Well, I am unable to contact the website hosts to make updates  available, unfortunately.  However, I believe that the Internet Archive's 'Way Back Machine' can still be used:

http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://aiab.emuunlim.com/r10.5

I do intend to get everything back online in the future, however, as I believe that AIAB can still prove useful to the Amiga emulation community.

As great as AmiKit is, it can be a little overwhelming for novices, and not everyone has access to an AmigaOS 3.5/3.9 CD.

Cheers,
James

I would like to have an AIAB package that just adds all the latest patches and such to an 3.1 or 3.9 installation.

User should be able to chose what applications should be installed and what hacks should be applied.

Well, the AIAB setup has a number of patches/hacks running (VisualPrefs, MagicMenu, Birdie etc.) and uses replacements such as Scalos and now AfA-OS.

I think ClassicWB is probably the 'cleanest' Workbench distribution out there.

I do hope you get AIAB back up. I am just now am getting back into the Amiga. I finally got a real Amiga (4000) but it is going to need some work. The emulation really helps me to find my way around Workbench. We had one wear I used to work and used the Toaster. The unit I have has got the toaster and that is what I am aiming to use. Its hard to remember all I did know but hopefully after getting upset a few times and screaming a few times it will all come back to me. Right now I am using Cloantos version and it is bringing back alot. I think the 10.5 was the version I have of AIAB but I will check out that archive you listed.

Thanks,
Rick

Thank you for the positive words of encouragement.  While I continue to maintain AIAB as something of a personal hobby, if I am able to locate some reliable webspace, I will upload the most recent updates.  Until then, I recommend using AmiKit or ClassicWB.

Cheers,
James

What was the last version of AIAB that was put out, and would it be compatible with the new version of WinUAE?

Hi All,

AIAB was the first 'pre-packaged' Amiga Workbench system I tried and although it might not have quite as many apps as AmiKit, I still think it's just as good, if not better!

It's HEAPS smaller and isn't too loaded down with junk. A big plus is that once it's installed, you have a very usable Workbench, THEN you can load the apps of your choice ontop of it...

Keep up the great work James, it's a truly excellent package!

Cheers,

Mike.

Thank you chaps.

I have received a hosting offer from a member here, so provided there are no problems, I should be able to upload some updated files in the near future.

Cheers,
James

Yeah, I gotta admit, I *REALLY* liked AIAB. I like Amikit, but it killed my 1.8 ghz box and had too much eye candy for me.

That's one thing I loved about my Amiga - I never needed the eye candy. It was fun to play with, but I could get along without it. When I migrated to WinUAE, I really like AIAB for a clean install of everything I wanted, plus all the eye candy I liked.

I know you don't support it anymore, but I do thank you for all your efforts in the past. They meant a lot to me.

cheers!

Thank you for the kind words.

Well, fortunately Jan has provided some reliable webspace, so I have uploaded a little fresh content for those who still like to tinker.

Cheers,
