So what games can be placed over a serial link ?
The ones I know of:
Populous 2
Lotus 2
Knights of the sky
Alien Breed 3D
Gloom (?)
Fears
What else?
Is this generally hard to set up or do you just plug the cable in ?
Any software you need or no ?
-
Armour Geddom
-
Vroom.
Dune 2.
I would like to know if those games could be played over serial between a real amiga and an uae machine. I tried once several years ago with a null-modem cable (Lotus 2 i guess) but it did not work.
-
Dune 2 allows it ? Thatd be AWESOME

awesome, very helpful!
Do you have any experience with this, how hard it is to set up etc ?
-
My top 3 (for what it's worth, which is possibly not a lot :) )
Stunt Car Racer - top game! If you haven't tried it yet - stop reading this and go and play it linked up!
Populous II - feel my firey volcano wrath, evil-doers. Oh, the fun you can have plonking a massive volcano in the other persons main towny area.
Powermonger - Roast mutton anyone? (meeh) Splatter your friends with catapults and wait for the screaming as their army is annihilated with maximum prejudice!
-

The only one I tried was Firepower, which was pretty easy. Plug in the nullmodem cable and you're ready to go. IIRC, you could also play over telephone line with serial modems (or was that a different game?).
-
F29 Retaliator?
I used to play It on my PCs, and I'm sure the Amiga version can be played over serial link (null modem cable).
-
Yeay Cammy & Colani1200. Firepower. I used to play that against my housemate in 1990 for hours into the night. 20 Years ago. Poor little squashed soldiers..
-
Stunt Car Racer FTW!
-
I added serial link support
to my opensource game called "2Decide"
which is on aminet.
I also made a serial link only
2 player space top down shooter
which I never uploaded unfortunately.
off topic:
I made a 2-? player local intense tag game
which I also never uploaded.
I made several other games
including Droidwars 1,2,3,4, and 5,
which are on aminet.

I don't know about Vroom but there is no head-to-head option for Dune 2. :(

Yeah, i made a mistake, i got confused by the remake Dune 2000. Bad luck.
Vroom can do it however, even between Amiga and Atari ST (just like Lotus 2).

Wow... Pretty comprehensive list!
Thought of Stuntcar Racer, Battlechess, F-16 Falcon and some other
olden goodies, they were on the list, together with the "newer" Exodus.
Excellent for future reference! :)
.oO(wondering whether Carrier Command had null-modem or not)
-
Xtreme Racing on 2 Amigas was great! If i remember correctly 6 players could race against each other. So much better than Mario Kart :D
-
Stunt Car Racer (with turbo-mode, lets say with 030/50) is a perfect example of linkup game.
And Super Skidmarks, we've played that a lot last years on meetings with simultaneous 8 players! You can split display between two Amigas and have 4 players on each computer.
In old times I used to like Knights of the Sky, Lotus and Armour Geddon as linkup game too.
Oh and if you have beefed up Amiga capable to hires gfx fast enough, Napalm is just great in two player mode!

Here is a list of games you can play with linked Amigas:
Cammy, I can't believe you missed the best one of all, and the one that can -only- be played using linked Amigas:
VR Slingshot!
Used to be a favorite at our user group meetings.
-
You can't believe I missed listing a game most people have never seen before? I never claimed to have a complete list of games that use null-modem cables, it's just the list I came up with. Anyone is welcome to recompile the list to include all these other games.
-
What's VR Slingshot?
Why is Cammy so nice?

Why is Cammy so nice?
Cause she's not a nit-wit! Not that I'm calling anyone a nit-wit.

Dog Fight

Perhaps Dogfight should be revised. I remember people claiming they played it with serial links, but they might have mixed memories with the PC version. Taking a quik peek at mag reviews I've found some of them stated the Amiga version lacked that option. Can anyone confirm?

Does anyone know if there's a way to fake a null modem connection between two WinUAE "Amigas" over the internet?

At least you can connect WinUAE and real amiga with null modem.

Does not work with lotus 2 for me.

Imagine if Syndicate had a multiplayer option. Man I would have loved that. Perhaps maps where both sides need to complete the same, or complementary objectives. For example they both may need to snatch person X, or one snatch them, the other assassinate. The overall winner would be the side that completed the most missions or whatever.
Gumbycorp FTW!

Well at least Gloom Deluxe did work.

Sorry, I was not serious - even about it being the 'best'. It was probably the most unusual, though, and why it people enjoyed messing around with it. It was strictly 2 machine/players, and both machines had to have 3D viewing hardware, X-Specs and a 15KHz CRT monitor or stereoscopic HMD, otherwise it was useless. I still have all that junk, but we don't seem to have meetings anymore, and you can't play with yourself.
Oops: What is it, since most people have never seen it? good point.
Looks like there is little info on the web, except that it involved "Simulation of motion via Newtonian physics. Airflow accurately simulated using Computational Fluid Dynamics Grid techniques." It was a space battle simulation between two fighters that required a bit of getting used to - a bit of thrust and you would travel and travel. I forgot that it also required analog joysticks! Getting the machines, the HMD and shutter glasses, and monitors, and the analog joystick adapters set up to play was quite a job. The author is still around, looks like took the Amiga references off his website, but added babes (amigas?) in skimpy shirts:

This is a great list thanks Cammy :)
We're having lots of fun playing some of these games. So far we've linked an A1200 Desktop and an A1200 Tower and tried Lotus II and Super Skidmarks :pint:
.

I vote for sticky - this would be a great list to not get buried.

Agreed, that would have been great!
There should have been more linked games on the Amiga.
I had Twin Tornado on the C64, even that could could do quite nice linked play.

Back in the day, we had hooked up Stuntcar Racer and Populous 2 between the Amiga 500 and the Atari Mega STe.
The funny thing was, on our (yes it was original!) version of Populous 2 for the Atari ST, you could hold down the F9 key and it would just crank up your mana.
So when we played it multiplayer, my brother was on the Amiga and was claiming that I was using this cheat on him because I totally kicked his butt.
Anyhow, I thought it was rather cool that you could network two different platforms together back in the day.
It'd be interesting to get a list of games that would work this way between the Atari and Amiga, then perhaps you could run WinUAE and Hatari side by side on a widescreen display and get some multiplayer fun in. Pretty sure under Windows you can't run two different copies of WinUAE or Hatari, so you'd kind of need to run both at once, right?
I'm just thinking Stuntcar Racer would be extremely awesome with 4 people (more would just make it ridiculously hard!)

there is syndicate wars (on pc though) that is syndicate in multiplayers (never tried it, it is just whats advertised).

The expansion disk for the original, American Revolt, supposedly had multiplayer, but only the PC version.

Hi Guys,
Linking two A1200's and playing Lotus II was straight forward as just chose LINK and we did the same for Super Skidmarks :)
For BattleChess we simply choose 'Modem plays red' on one A1200 and 'Modem plays blue' on the other and that works fine too :)
But we can't get see any option to link in Micro Machines
Can anyone give any instructions please??

I had Mac warcraft2 running under shapeshifter on my A4K and connected to a PC with the PC version, that was cool. it came on a hybrid mac/pc CDRom.

what about scortched tanks its cool game
