HDTools issue
« on: March 19, 2005, 10:54:48 PM »
I have a A3000, Warp Engine 040, 3.1 roms, Quantum CTS40S primary drive, Seagate ST34555N secondary, external CD ROM drive.
I got it from a friend of mine who hasnt used it in years.. I cleaned it up and it goes to the Kickstart screen etc.  So I decide to install 3.1.. well when I get to HDTools, all drives are unknown.  So I click on the first (quantum I assume), read configuration, it cannot determine the size automatically for either of the drives.. and when I click save I get Error #4 on the Quantum and Error #20 on the Seagate.. any clue as to how I can get this working?

Can you see the drives in the early boot startup?

Maybe try HDInstTools from Aminet and see if that software can recognise your drives. If it also fails to get config from your drives I would assume a scsi-chain conflict or maybe the scsi chip onboard needs reseating/replacing.

You might also try config the drives without the WarpEngine installed. I believe the WarpEngine had some problems with scsi conflict with the onboard A3000 controller.

Has the A3000 had the int2 fix hack done?

Hmmm... I would assume that the internal harddrives
are on the Warp SCSI (much faster than the A3000 SCSI).
Try changing the info in the HDTools icon to show
'device=warpdrive.device'.

i reseated the WD scsi chip..even before the warp engine I had the same problems.  As for the int2 fix..no it doesnt and I dont think it matters if I have it.  Also I cannot see the drives on early boot startup.  I'll try the Aminet software thingy.

If I took pics of the hd's and their pin settings/termination can someone see if I have the jumpers/termination set correctly?

I may be a little bit off here, but doesn´t the _int2 line need to be present if you use I/O stuff on the accelerator?

TheMagicM,

What SCSI interface are the HD's hooked up to?  If it's the WE use the internal SCSI since you do not have the Int2 mod done.  Also just use one HD first and see if it comes up that way, with 1 you do not need termination if you use a short cable (like the one that comes with the A3000)

Looking for Fusion Fourty PNG ROMs V3.4?

I pulled the WE out.. and am using the original SCSI cable.  The system used to work according to the previous owner.. it had 2 internal hd's and a external SCSI CDROM. I guess what is confusing to me is the jumpers on the other drive.. I have a spare 240megger I want to try but I dont know if termination/jumpers or whatever is done properly, which is why I wondered if I took pics someone can check it out.

Pics of the drives you wish to setup might help, clarify what is there and what needs to be done

Another thing, if the previous owner had an external scsi cd-rom, he might have removed the internal scsi-terminators from the motherboard. Stick a 25pin scsi terminator on the external port to end that part of the scsi chain.

Might help, might not..  helpfull lot aren't we? :-)

Really, some scsi setups need black magic or voodoo to get working correctly.. lol

Your setup is simular to my A3k ...
I have mine setup with the WarpDrive SCSI running
the internal drive and the A3k SCSI running the
external 9 gig drive and CD Rom.
I didn't remove the terminator pack from the MoBo
and it works fine.
The Quantum 40s is a 40 meg drive (not worth much)
and should work with just about any setup.
Basicly all you really need to do is terminate the
last drive on ribbon cable. On my machine the only
jumpers I usually have to set are 'AutoStart' and
"termination'. If the Quantum drive is a good drive
then it should work on either the WE SCSI or A3k SCSI.
Don't worry about SCSI address, with no SCSI address
jumpers set it will be set to SCSI address zero which
is good. IIRC both WE SCSI and A3k SCSI use address
number seven (7) as their device number so any address
other than seven (7) for the drives is fine.
If you are sure the Quantum is a good drive, I would
use it for testing.
I don't know what the SeaGate drive is. Its been my
experience that Seagates are a little more fussy than
Quantun.
If you think I can help... EMail me.

I'm sure you can.. when I get home I'll try again with just the quantum hd and a different scsi cable. 30 minutes till i'm outta here..
