Classic Workbench WHDLoad issue
« on: January 16, 2017, 12:27:20 AM »
Hi,

Ive recently installed Classic Workbench onto my amiga 1200. I had a load of WHD load games in the Games folder before i installed classic WB and they worked fine.

For some reason now when i go into my games folder and click on one of the games it shows the file name but has ".slave" at the end of it. When i try and load the game it doesnt load up

A Scalos window opens up saying

(see attached Image)

When i insert the CF card with all the whdload games on A-Z into the PCIMA slot for some reason it doesnt show them, ive checked to make sure they are not hidden.

For some reason it seem like its not recognising them..

Any suggestions?

Wow! Is that some AROS/Workbench hack system that is necessary because people have forgotten how to install OS3.9? WHDLoad works fine on OS3.9 so if it isn't broke don't fix it I'd say. Sorry, I've never heard of these Workbench replacements before. AmiKit is the only one that I've seen but I've never seen the point of using it on an actual Classic machine to be honest.

It sounds like it messed up your icon types, or is mis-reading them, or mis-interpreting what actions should be performed when clicking on an icon of a certain type (i.e., changed "project" icons into "tool" icons.)  It's trying to run the slave file directly instead of piping it all into your C:WHDLoad executable.

Sorry, never used Classic Workbench either, IMHO it makes your system too "un-Amiga-like", and is going to make what's probably a pretty easy to resolve situation much harder, unless someone is experienced with it.  :(

What do you see if you open the properties of one of the game icons? What happens if you try to run the game from the command line? Can you confirm that WHDLoad is still present in your C: directory?

I managed to copy over everything into the C: directory as was shown in the tutorial I watched.

I'm just confused why the current A-Z games I have on my PCIMA CF card are not showing. I've plugged the PCIMA into my PC and I can see the list of games on it.

Typical for WHDLoad games are:

* An icon/metadata file "MyGame.info" and a slave file "MyGame.slave" (and most often a Data directory)
* The MyGame.info is set to type "project"
* The MyGame.info has WHDLoad as Default Tool
* The MyGame.info has a tooltype "SLAVE=MyGame.slave"
* The MyGame.info may have other tooltypes to pass on parameters to WHDLoad

That is all.

That is not how you a supposed to start WHDLoad slave files.

Amiga has no concept of "hidden files".

Yes, somehow you are either not seeing, or you are lacking the icon files. On the PC, do you see also files names ending with .info, typically equivalent to that of the .slave file? If you do, then it probably just a matter of ScalOS not being able to display them properly. My suggestion would then be to install PeterK's icon.library, which is able to recognise and display all types of icons.

Excellent point.

Are you clicking on a full color icon to start the game? Or something else, perhaps looking like a little square?

At the moment I've got the files displayed in list view. I will try and have them set out as icons to see what they look like. Surely the appearance of the icon will now resolve the issue of loading the WHDLoad games?

I feel like after I installed Classic Workbench there is something missing where it is not recognizing the WHDload games.  :(

A properly installed WHDLoad game (like what most people download off the Internet) needs to start from the icon.  That's because many of the tooltypes and parameters used to run the game (such as the name of the .slave file)  are set as icon tooltypes.

Icon should be of type "Project", with the default tool set as "C:WHDLoad".  Again, assuming you have something like NewIcons or the Peter K. icon library installed, that icon will be a little color picture of the game - typically of the box art.

Yeah, sorry about that.  I hate to sound like an a*hole but it's probably better to not install things without researching them fully.  IMHO Classic Workbench is rubbish because of the way it changes the system to operate in an unpredictable and un-Amiga-like manner.  Just my .02 cents...

Okay I've seemed to of resolved part of the problem. I used something called iGame that comes with classic WB. Searched for the depositories in the Games: partition and added them and they work okay.

Just need to see if the CF Card in the PCMCIA port will show the games I've got on there.

I'm running a version of ClassicWB (install first on completely clean/wiped partitions) on two of my Amiga's and everything works just fine. Even when double-clicking a WHDLoad games' icon (or tiny dot) within their folders, but obviously running a front end such as iGame or whatever helps immensely. Glad you got it sorted out!

ClassicWB is excellent once you get it up and running and am glad it exists, though installing on a real Amiga can be a bit of a pain. Still, takes a lot of the legwork hunting down then dealing with installing all the various patches, programs, utilities and other useful bits that are included.   :)
