Avi Capture
« on: October 15, 2003, 05:32:47 PM »
Has anyone got the AVI capture facility to work on WinUAE? All it seems to do with me is crash.
I've got a Scala project that I want to turn into a SVCD, and I'd love to be able to get it off of my HDD.

Any Ideas?

@cecelia

You set it up via the output tab, pick a codec for both the audio and the video, name the saved file and thats it I suppose.
All I get is WinUAE hanging for ages, then a message coming up with "DirectDrawer_GetDC() Failed" in it.
Click OK on that and it boots fine.
I presume it picks up the front screen and records that.

Any clues anyone?

Works okay for me, using PCM audio and DivX video, but it never used to, I've just tried it now 'cause you reminded me about it :-)

Never got that error message though, typically M$ will tell you nothing about what it means, and just tell you to re-install everything, thus keeping you in the dark. Your computer's internal workings are a matter that don't concern you  :roll:.

What you could do is go to a PC forum, where they'll be more clued-up on any DirectX problems you may have. The usual Microsoft/Intel rules apply: make sure you've got the lastest drivers for your video card, your motherboard, pretty much everything.

Which video codec are you using?

@cecelia

DirectX9 and I have (just about) every damn codec available, inc DivX 5.02 (the latest IIRC)

I've posted up on the UAE discussion board and I have noticed that there is/was a problem where the AVI saver doesen't like it when the screen resolution changes (i.e. when the P96 stuff kicks in). I'll look into this tomorrow nad let y'all know.

DivX is up to 5.1, but I'm using Pro 5.0.5, that shouldn't really be an issue though... especially if the problem's happening with all codecs you try.

I'm using 0.8.2.2 release 9 of WinUAE (don't they have the stupidest version numbers!), which is the latest available on WinUAE.net.

DirectX has its own 'diagnostic' program you should try if you haven't already. Just go to the Run option on the start menu and enter 'dxdiag'. It never solved any of my problems (they turned out to be drivers for my chipset that needed updating) but you might strike lucky.

What is your windows desktop resolution, and what is your Amiga workbench resolution? If this is different; win->1024, Workbench->1280, codec and capture software will fail. That is, of course, if capturing software starts while you are still in windows. I can't try that for you because I'm too lazy right now to install winUAE, but, try with the same settings. I never try that option under winUAE, and I'm just guessing now. ALso, instead of DiVX, use Lingos Indeo Video 5.11 with quick compress and scalability option checked, capture quality 100%, fps->25. It's much more faster than DiVX, but you will need huge amount of HDD space. That actually depend on your resolution and lenght in mins. When you're done, recompress it with DiVX, 2 passes, and you're ready to rock.

I suggest the huffyuv patch codec (looseless compression) because it doesn't really use nay cpu time.
Works fine on me :-)
