Any good RPGs?
« on: August 11, 2009, 03:35:33 PM »
Hi,

I was wondering whether there were any good RPGs released for the classic Amiga (OCS/ECS or AGA).

Specifically, I'm wondering if there are any Japanese/console-style games (like Final Fantasy etc), or anything in the style of the Elder Scrolls series (even if vaguely), or even a roguelike. I only have 2MB RAM and a stock 1200 68EC020, but I'm thinking of expanding RAM and possibly processor eventually.

Thanks, Matt

Ishar 2 is very elder scrollesque IMHO. It's openended and comes in both AGA and non AGA versions that don't differ so much.
A1200 030 40MHz: 2/32MB Indivision AGA MkII
A600 7 MHz: 2MB
AROS 600 MHz
PC 13600 MHz: quad core i7 2600K 3.4GHz: 16GB RAM: ATI HD6950 2GB   (Yes I know)

WINUAE AmiKit ClassicWB AmigaSYS UAE4Droid

If you want to play a game where you take the roll of a wizard and you must cast various spells in an intelligent and strategic manner to defeat hordes of evil monsters so that you can take your rightful place as Ruler of the World then Total Chaos AGA is the game for you.

A few features:
Thousands of magic spells to cast. There are numerous players who have been playing the game every week for 5 years and they are still discovering wild new magic.

Thousands of monsters to fight.  This means tons of strategy depending on exactly who you are fighting and how they are arranged.

A large active community of players who play the game or load up DPaint and draw new gfx for the game or use Audition 4 or Audiomaster or etc. to make new sfx. etc. etc. ad infinitum.

Total Chaos AGA loves your A1200.  Unlike the other games listed in this thread, which ban you from using your Amiga 1200's hires graphics modes; Total Chaos AGA allows you to use your trusty A1200 to its full potential.

Some guy from Poland just made a new Total Chaos fansite loaded with tons of info here: http://totalchaoseng.dbv.pl/news.php

And if you fancy jap style, Speris Legacy, which is not actually japanese but  a good aproximation, might be worth a look.

Once again, rockersuke beats me to it. Speris Legacy is indeed the closest we've got to the Zelda-style JRPG. There's also Legend, Dragonstone and Darkmere!

I always liked the Valhalla series on the Amiga.

Valhalla 1 - The Lord Of Infinity
Valhalla 2 - Before The War
Valhalla 3 - The Fortress Of Eve

Here's links to info in the respective order:

As mentioned ,Speris legacy is very zelda like, and quite pretty

Dragonstone & darkmere, owe a lot to JRPG, but like most Amiga games, are European feeling, rather than japanese.

Ultima 3 to 6 are available natively, and 7 is available through an interpreter.

Legend of valour is is 3D, and not a million miles away from the Eldar scrolls.

But really, the Amiga was a western machine, and you should try some of the best RPG titles that aren't JRPG based, maybe: Eye of the beholder, Dungeon Master, abandoned places, Ishar.

EDIT: I should read the thread properly, most of my carefully thought of titles, have been thought of by other people!

And some great point and click adventure games might fit the bill as well.

Another good D&D like RPG is Black crypt. You should know that there are AGA versions of E.O.B 1&2.
2 interesting 3D-isometric RPGs are the Tower of souls and Blade.

or even a roguelike

I highly recommend A.D.O.M from Aminet.

I was reading through an old Amiga Format magazine and saw this reader's game called Kak, which is like a Zelda-style RPG with a more western look. It reminds me of a cross between Valhalla and Speris Legacy a bit. It's not too bad and plays the way you would expect from a game like this, although being coded in Blitz it's kinda slow on the A600 and needs the 030 in the A1200 to play at a decent speed.

Try it out yourself:  http://aminet.net/package/game/role/KAK

Heimdall 1 and 2 are very fun, even if the combat in both can be a bit tedious.

Hilt is a fun rogue like. It almost plays like a MUD but with 4 characters. Would probably do great for hotseat play too.

I really enjoyed Dragonstone for a "zelda like" type of game. Played Darkmere a bit and it seemed awesome, but I didn't play it extensively.
