A1200: new hard drive worked great, then didn't.
« on: August 15, 2020, 01:30:10 AM »
I have a mostly stock Amiga1200 (with a Blizzard expansion board, AmigaOS 3.1) and thought it was finally time to replace the original internal hard drive.

I got a Hitachi IBM 30GB IDE 4200rpm 2.5in drive and installed it.  I made 2 partitions in the first 4GB (left the rest alone) installed everything and its been working great for about a week.

But just now when I turned on my Amiga, the orange hard drive light stays on, there are some disk noises, the screen is black, and eventually it asks me to put in the Workbench floppy.   When I boot from the floppy, it doesn't see the drive.

Any ideas?

Did you mount it properly inside? Not floating, touching other electronics maybe?

Its sitting on the same platform that the original drive used (see pic).  The holes for the screws didn't match up so I used some electrical tape to secure it.

It was working for a week without problems.

I'm going to put in a USB drive to see what my Mac thinks.  Then try to return it (90 day warranty).

How old is it? You can try to read statistics/errors from that drive, but i think this is not working from USB, only directly connected. But the label should give you the production date at least.

I replaced my stock hard drive with a 4 GB compact flash drive.   Works great and can be had easily from most shops.   I’m thinking that the new drive might have been very old stock.

Ensure that there's no way for the drive electronics to short out - e.g. put a piece of card underneath the drive

Any ideas?

I assume it is an old HDD, maybe it just went defective. I would do as you suggested: test it in another system. Does the drive spin up on systemstart? Does it make any unusual noise?

Regards

Did you format the drives with quick format. Just that I had the same thing till I was advised only ever to Quick Format. If you do full format then you will get the old wrap around and keep losing the drives. Guess you may already have known that, but worth mentioning.

PS I keep the total drives to just a smidge under 4GB. I had replaced six drives to 1200s before I discovered the issue and had to reformat all the drives. Works a charm.

I only ever use Seagate Momentus 5400.2 40 GB,5400 RPM,2.5" IDE Internal Hard Disk Drives.

It may have failed. Next time you turn the power on put your ear to the drive and listen for strange noises. Of course make sure cable its on properly 2.5 drives get power from ide too
