I haven't played as many Amiga games as I have Megadrive(/Genesis) but Superfrog doesn't strike me as being Major League.

It didn't get as much publicity as some, but it was a uniquely "Amiga" game.  (Even though there might have been a PC version?)

On a slightly more bizarre note here, how many people were aware that Duke Nukem made his first debut as a platform game for MSDOS? I was just wondering if it was available somewhere and if it worked with PCTask/Fusion.

I'm sure it is... Check the Underdogs.

I've played it before.  Honestly, I thought it was pure garbage, even compared to other titles back in the late 80's.    It just illustrates how pathetic PC games of that time were, compared to Amiga, Atari and consoles.

Also, what are you opinions on Core Design platformers like Chuck Rock 1 & 2, Wolfchild and Wonderdog.

I liked Wolfchild and Wonderdog.  Never played any Chuck Rock(s) that much.  Not sure why.  (shrug)

I've got to admit I never got on with Zool. I remember getting sucked in by all the hype when I was a kid but when I actually got the game home I was so disappointed as it was nowhere near the same league as Sonic or Mario. That's not to say I didn't play it through and have a lot of fun, it just didn't play as well or look as good as the best console platform games.

Superfrog, however, had a certain amount of polish and I thought that game would have done pretty well on the consoles. It's great to have an Amiga exclusive though!  :-P

As for Kid Chaos I only ever played a demo but I remember being impressed with the speed and polish of the game. But something annoyed me about the 'Kid' himself.

How does Alfred Chicken compare? I never played but always intended to as it looked like a pretty fun game that wasn't trying too hard to be a 'console platform game'.

have been a multi-platform release like James Pond, Zool and a few
others.
------------------------------------------------------------

I totally agree.........people give too much credit to Superfrog. I definitely like the game and it is polished, but not enough to compete with the consoles....it just lacks something.............maybe scrolling backgrounds and a little more animation on the frog when running and moving..............and more purpose.

-----------------------------------------------------------

I think they were very crappily made.............they are incomplete looking and most only have music and no sound effects........THAT SUCKS!.......they could have employed the wonderfull technique that Psygnosis used which was the music was on all the time even taking up all  sound channels, but when a sound effect was needed, the least important channel in the music is removed while the sound effect was executed. Or they could have made 3 channel music and left one for sound effects.
Don't get me wrong, Core Design got better and better (Banshee is excellent and also Tomb Raider) but the games were mostly incomplete and seemed like cheap degraded copies.

CD32 is actually the best Amiga ever made by Commodore!...

Also, Superfrog encourages gambling...see the end-of-level screens where you had to gamble to get a password for that level...what sort of example does that set to kids, eh?  :-D  Did Sonic teach you to smoke? Did Mario have secret levels where you dealt drugs (mind you, I've seen one screen where he starts flying, so he must have been drinking too much Red Bull)...I don't know...still, Lara croft got her Lucozade habit from the platforming green frog.

I would add The Power of the Ginger to this selection, except a) nobody bought it from me b) It's not quite as good as ruff n' Tumble (but more engrossing than charlie J Cool! Hurray!) and c) None of you have heard of it. I'll release it one day, when I can be bothered...for WinUAE...

Hey, it's not like I'm bitter, or anything... :-)

Superfrog encouraged the French cuisine too.

But as for the consoles, Sonic encouraged kids to pickup rings and
diamonds from places they shouldn't have been and Mario kidnapping a
Princess called `Peach' whilst consuming magic mushrooms; decidedly
more downmarket in the moral department.

As for morals who can forget the platform game Pussies Galore. Let's
not go there.

Although judging by the US Army's latest adventure's I'd say they've
all been playing Disposable Hero.

:-D

I'd love to try that game, the legal situation with it made a purchase
very difficult.

Was it similar to Super Mario or did it go down the Superfrog road of
jerky animation and decidedly AMOS-Pro feel...

:-D

Oh, the Superfrog lovers are gonna kill me!

;-)

Can I stick my neck out though and say that Zool 2 AGA was abominable,
yet on the Jaguar it was smooth scrolling and had music + FX
simultaneously. Why was it so jerky on Amiga 1200, Zool 1 was
extremely fluid if I remember correct.

What was all the fuss about Shadow of The Beast? It looked like
Altered Beast on Megadrive, was it special?

For emulation platforming may I reccomend (on top of Sonic 1, Asterix
for AmiMasterGear)...   The New Zealand Story for AmiMasterGear, Super
Mario 3 on CoolNES and Kirby on AmiGameBoy.

Those are good enough to keep you playing for hours and work on '030
too. I also like a spot of emulated Bubble Bobble, BombJack, Bust 'a
Move and Bomberman!

:-o

Objective as I'm trying to be here...where on earth was there jerky scrolling in Superfrog? The game looked cuter than Mario, and ran nearly as fast as Sonic (in fact, Superfrog was much more pleasing to the eyes). I wish I could have coded something like Superfrog in Amos Pro...

Incidentally, I just remembered the cheeky 'Big Sucking Things' in the Circus level in Superfrog. They were implemented deliberately to be a subtle innuendo...so I read from a preview..

I really hate to say it, but there's nothing that has so ultra fast scrolling and at the same time has such detailed gfx as Sonic.
Zool and Superfrog just do not have that kind of detailed backgrounds.
The only game I can think of that can come close is Mr.Nutz.

Well it's obvious that Sonic The Hedgehog was smoothe and detailed but
despite Mr.Nutz being a pretty game with lush graphics it was average
at best.

I don't think Mr.Nutz came out on Amiga anyway, if your looking at
Megadrive cutsie platformers Rolo To The Rescue is a good one with
100+ levels of clever puzzles and character swapping.

Also they say Plok on SNES was good, similar to Kid Chaos. I suppose
the only way to define a game as good is for the individual to tune-in
to the game's pace.

I can understand how Mr.Nutz would appeal to some and Sonic to others.
I really should play Superfrog properly before dissing it, but I think
Leirbag28 and I both agree that the main character lacked the
Whizz-Bang of a spinning, falling, skidding, ricocheting hedgehog.

Same with a lot of Amiga characters - take Oscar, Brian The Lion and
even the Amiga Streetfighter 2 sprites; they all lacked animation
cells or something.

Kid Chaos did not and that's why I'm ranting about it, and no doubt
Ruff 'n Tumble has inspired a lot of responses too.

The original design for Kid chaos was to have him as a fox, I think. That may have been a bit too similar to a hedgehog's sidekick...

Really? Kid Chaos was going to be a fox?

That would have been after Tails, Titus, Starfox etc!

:-)

I don't think the main character is that appealing but then if you
look at Bonk on PC Engine, Chuck Rock etc. then cavemen have always
been popular.

It's a great game though even though it rapidly gets tough and some
may say it loses it's initial appeal in the more technical levels.

On a different note, did you know that Lara Croft was originally going
to be a game on Atari Jaguar called Laura Cruz? Quite how Core would
have made a 3D game on Jaguar I don't know - the machine's polygon
capability was a mere 40,000/s compared to the Playstation's
500,000/s.

:-D
