A1200 rebooting problems
« on: March 28, 2003, 11:59:59 AM »
Hi!

I'm having problem with my old A1200. It have been collecting dust for a while but now I want to use it again. However, when running, sometimes it likes to restat without any reason. Even during boot it can sometimes reset. Where should I start troubleshooting? I pretty sure this is a hardware problem. Can my old HDD be causing this?

Is there a list of known proplems somewhere I can look at? Thanks in advance...

/Hoax

Could be a poor connection where the PSU
plugs into the back of the machine...
I know it sounds dumb, but I had a
similar problem on my old 1200 and it turned
out I didn't have the connector pushed in
all the way. :) Other causes could be a faulty
PSU, perhaps a "cold - solder" or loose solder
point on the motherboard somewhere...I'm sure
there are more. You could try unplugging your
hard disk and see if it still does it etc.

sounds like a PSU problem. Are you good with a soldering Iron?

Get a small screwdriver to depress the catch on the plug and slip the plastic cover back. Check to make sure that all the wires are soldered to their apropriate pins. The one that isn't will need to be soldered back in place. Slip the cover back onto the plug.
Simple.
I had a similar problem on one of my A500s

Tom (tweeks) knows a little more about that stuff: http://www.theweeks.org/toms-stuff/AMYHACKPAGE.html

Thats a new friend of mine in S.A. Tx.

If you have an accelerator board with fastram or plain fastram expansion, you could also try to remove this and just let your 1200 run without it for a while.

If it's not a psu problem, it's very likely it is a problem with your expansion, loose ram, heat, etc.

If you are careful, you could also open your 1200 and check that all cables are ok and not loose. Floppy, harddrive, etc. Also check that your Kickstart chips are nicely fitted.  (Just give them a little push)

I had that exact same problem with my old PSU. The Amiga would run for anything between 10sec and 15min between the resets. Disapeared when I cut of the power plug and soldered it to a 230W AT PSU and used that with my Amiga instead (I guess a standard A500 PSU don't support an A1200 with 3 extra drives, Turbo board and Harddrive running of it, at least not for very long).  :-D

your hdd or hdd cable could be causing this or a faulty PSU (try one from an A500 it's a bit more juicy if you feel there is too much power consumption)
If you have an accellerator card that also could be the problem.
I had an Apollo 040/40Mhz card long time ago and it did just that :(
then i got myself a phase 5 ppc card :-D

I have an idea...

Perhaps it's a psu, memory, accellerator, ide-cable, floppy-cable, loose roms, expansioncard based problem?

just to repeat everyone else including me... ;-)

Sorry, just had to.. just looked like no-one read what others has already written :-)
