TV card tip
« on: October 24, 2002, 02:05:52 AM »
I was messing around the other day and decided to plug the Amiga's
composite output into the TV card on my mediator.
It worked without problem and I found that AGA/ECS games and demos
could be retargeted to workbench this way.

This is a good alternative to using a scandoubler, although
you still don't get the early startup screen.

Ah yes!  Amigas and TV's.  Two great tastes that taste great together.  I remember when the Amiga first came out with those wonderful little TV outs.  I asked an IBM dealer at the time about hooking up a pee cee to my TV, and he said it couldn't be done.

I miss those wonderful days of blissfull ignorance. :-D

@Rob

I've been doing this for ages. I't also means that ScalaMM400 and Brilliance both work Perfectly.
Along with Microprose Golf, Galaga and Pinball Dreams/Fantasies/Illusions etc, etc

Another really good tip is to use my lovely SuperTV and (if you have a Hauppauge card with remote) HauppaugeIR programs, which can be downloaded here:

It works really well up to a certain point - it depends on what game you want to play and whether it is hard disk installable (and then of course if you can actually run the game with the WB open!) Thankfully mosdt of the HD installers seem to work ok :-)

You do need to set the size of the TV window to what size you want before you run the game also (since most of them dont allow you to swap screens). Apps like LightwaveV5 scala of course still allow you to multitask without a problem so you can resize by switching back to the 'workbench screen'

Nice to be able to play a bit of T-Zero without having to faf about connecting a TV up though! :-D

Another slight problem is if the game crashes halfway through it means that you can not get back to the Workbench so you need to reboot (unless of course the game multitasks.

Shame the output from the Amiga can not be passed to the TV card when you turn straight on though (although I guess you could solve this with a resident RAD disk which would involve starting the Picasso96 drivers up and weverything else.)

That wouldn't get you the early startup menu though...

Well if your lucky enough to own a grex+v3 or Bvision, seeing the bootscreen is not a problem as there promoted to the gfx card by the firmware :)

Heh... if you have a G-Rex and your Amiga still works, you are lucky :D (based on a not very representative sample of two people I know, so don't take that too seriously :-) )

Doh! I didnt think that through properly now did I! :-/

That would need new ROMS I guess then, there again, how does this work on the Grexx.. trying to work it out in my head.. got it I think though..

Would I be correct in thinking that the Grexx firmware is innitailsed before the system roms and thats how the output is sent to the gfx card?

summat like that?

Yupp, I've known about this for a while. The picture's quite fuzzy, though. :-(

Use the composite output ont he A1200 and hook it into the Composite in connector on your TV card (if you have one) - that gives me a super sharp picture :-)

Also hookthe sound from the amiga up to one of the inputs on the soundblaster if yas want, that means I can use one audio input on my hifi and hear everything (cd, amiga, mp3 and modem (not that I need to hear the modem!))
