Hi HIFI,

I found one like it at a local thrift store. It was in the original box, with no disks.

After some research I decided that the drivers are in an onboard rom. Using Snoopdos or some other system monitor I found that there was a Roc-something active that I could not locate anywhere on the hard drive.

Is there a 3 position switch on the back of the case? If so, IIRC, the center position lets the thing be fully functional. Another position disables the ram. The third disables both the ram & hard drive for those old compatibility issues. Anyway, if it has a hard drive, try booting up in all three positions.

One note of caution. A lot of the HD controllers from that era can not understand hard drives larger than 100MB or two. I do -not- know of this is true of Roc-Tek systems or not.

BTW, 4MB 30 pin sims work just fine as 1MB ones. (You still have to fill all 8 sockets to get 8MB of ram. (Some of mine are branded Intergraph from a CAD workstation I parted out.)

The system has worked fine for me even daisy-chained to a Supra 68000 28mhz accelerator I got off ebay. I upgraded the A500 to KS 2.04 running WB 2.1 with no problems. When I taught a class on banner making at a Gateway show a few years ago, I used that machine just to prove how useful a relatively low spec machine can be.

Good luck.
Best,

Bob Kennedy

Try the A590 Install disk, as all A500 HD are based on the A590 it should work.

I seem to remember that a lot of old amiga peripherals didn't need drivers and such. I'd expect that you'd have to fiddle with some switches or something rather than loading up some drivers.

I have to be anal here.. The fact that they plug into the AmigaBus doesn't mean they are based on the A590.

It is true, that most A500 hd controllers worth thinking about support (at least partially) the RDB standard that came with the A2091/590 controller design.
