Title: Amiga Org, and AmiBench
Post by: tecno on August 16, 2005, 04:43:19 PM
I wonder what Wayne and the gang here think about the idea of AmiBench being merged with their Amiga Orh site.

The main reason I am suggesting this is that I really dont have the time or resources to take AmiBench where it needs to go.

If wayne or any one else from the Amiga Org team would like to contact me, you know the email!

This really is a serious offer by the way, I would really like AmiBench to remain open and to serve the Amiga Community for as long as it can, but the site is very dated and really could do with a refresh and I do honestly believe that the Amiga Org guys can offer that,

What do Youthink?

Hmm....

How would it b implemented?

One major advantage I would see, is the fact that it would add more trust factor to transactions if people could see they are known members of the community. People wouldn't be so likely to rip others off if it would lead to their reputation being besmirched.

(I remember the poor guys who got ripped last year by a guy selling non-existent Blizzards in UK)

I dont know the answer to that, I was and still hope that the ideas I had for AmiBench could be put into practice.

Sadly its not happened yet and due to the real world stuff I have to do now all I can do really to help is project manage and bug test, I believe that Amiga Org can (and could) call on people who would like to be part of the project and help move AmiBench back into being something more than just a quaint website thats slowly just drifting into cyberspace nothingness.

Hum,
I’m all for supporting Amibench...

Even if it is just listed in the `buyer beware` section...

I think Amibench should be kept alive. It really is a godsend for Amiga hobbyists. And I should really emphasise that, 'HOBBYISTS'. As its more of a place for hobbyists to trade/buy/sell hardware, in this current climate of putting 'RARE' next to an item and selling it for a fortune on eBay
;-). Not that I should criticise this too much, we all gotta pay the rent at the end of the day.

Did you know it launched back in 97 I think, I cant remember anymore but the sites been there for along time, it would be nice for it to at least get to being 10 years old!

Hi Mark,

I am VERY, INCREDIBLY interested in your proposal as I think it's something that could benefit the Amiga community as well as both sites.  I'm not particularly sure at this point how such an integration could work between your software and our Xoops software.  I'm more than willing to provide hosting for AmiBench, but we'd need to work out the details of exactly what you had in mind.  Then we'll need to find one or more "helpers" to moderate and manage all that stuff.

You can reach me care of wayne at amiga.org

I think that's a nice idea.  Ever since Amiga.org lost it's marketplace a couple of years back something has always been missing.  If AmiBench could be integrated with the Amiga.org Xoops system that would be great.  (And, if it could be enhanced with options like item pictures, etc. that would be even better)

@ Wayne

I would sincerely be willing to help in some way with that, now I have a bit more time on my hands

Right, I have posted a quick email off to wayne.

I will try to get things sorted out with wayne so things can move forward.

Will post updates here when Me and Wayne have talked more

Obviously it depends on what the outcome is as to what happens and I am sure we will reach an agreement soon

 :-)

@tecno

I was ready and willing to help with amibench earlier last year when you were asking for help, but no direction was ever forwarded my way in order to lend a hand.

To be honest I think that coding up a system would be pretty simple, then your only worry would be some form of moderation.

I think some sort of partnership with A.org would be an excellent way of getting that moderation.

Well theres still a free php coder here if you want an extra pair of hands.

Indeed, I still use AmiBench daily, have done since the first time i got online prety much. Ive been contemplating contacting Tecno for a while now to see if I could be of any help but since it looks to be moving to amiga.org then I wont need to bother :-)

Im happy to help out if needed though.

That would be great, especially if it means Amibench continuing to operate rather than not!  Nice one Wayne for being so immediately open to the idea.  I'm sure that many of us have completed sucessful Amibench transactions but the extra confidence of possibly knowing who you are dealing with would be very welcome.

AGREED!  I'm one who loves Amibench as seller and buyer cause it's a much much better alternative then E-bay.  I've sold stuff on E-bay too, but I find that the people on Amibench are more about the Amiga, and less about the $$$  :-D

Tankz for carrying the torch Wayne!
