Zip Memory Chips
« on: January 23, 2008, 01:06:13 PM »
Hi all,
I won this on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=110215775489&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=001 . Ok here goes.
Does anyone know what hardware had zip memory chips? What i was thinking was to Cannibalise the hardware for zip memory.
Is that possible? if so how hard? What particular chips am i looking for?
If this is not possible is there any place that i can still buy them?
Thanks

A3000 does have zips for the onboard memory although the zips are becoming increasingly hard to find.

And if I'm not mistaken, the CDTV has ZIP memory too.

I think he's looking for non-Amiga hardware to 'cannabalize'.  The external Supra EX memory expansion for Amiga 500 also had the weird looking chips ("zip" chips), but my wife threw it out before I could put it up for auction or give it to someone.

Since there are 16 sockets, the CPU needs 32 bit width and there's no such a thing as a 2 bit wide RAM chip, you'll need '4x' chips: 414256 (4x256K) or 414400 (4x1M) - depending on the RAM controller - in sets of 8. 4x256K would only give 1 MB, so the serious (and possibly the only) choice would be to use 4x1M - these are exactly the same as for an A3000. BBoAH states the card supports up to 8 MB (non-autoconfig), so that matches.

4x256K can be found on some old VGA cards, but 4x1M will probably have to be bought. Either take your time for ebay or ask Softhut, about a year ago they had them stocked ($40/4 MB).

I've never seen that board before, it looks cool!  There might be some source on the net that describes the particular chips you need.  There were 2 varieties of 1Meg x 4:

Page Mode - last 4 digits were 4400, used in Supra 500RX

Static Column - last 4 digits were 4402, used in A3000

I hope you would only canabalize junked PCs and not any of the shrinking Amiga stock, grin.

There's a very good chance it will work with both flavors. I guess it doesn't take advantage of the static column mode (as the A3000 does with its '030). If you get SC chips and they don't work, I'll swap them for FP ones.

Old Acorn's such as the Acorn 3000 use these too, which thankfully give it a wider user base which helps when they are rare.

I don't know about that, but I do know the CBM BridgeBoards used ZIP memory.

I believe the Acorn 3000 machines used DRAM 256Kx4 120n 20pin ZIP memory

You would only get 2meg of fast ram on the accelerator with these, if you can find them.

This doesn't directly apply to your card, but is an interesting product - A3000 Zip<>Simm adapter...

http://www.amiga-hardware.com/showhardware.cgi?HARDID=1060

and an old review....

http://dk.aminet.net/docs/rview/AmiFast.txt

I wonder if the original developer is around or enough info exist to make more and some kind of version for your card.

BTW I used to scavenge zip chips from old Networth ISA 16bit UTP16 PC network cards (circa 1991) to use in my A3000's. Probably not much chance of finding those out side of a land fill these days, but keep your eyes open for old cards.
