Big HD & A1200
« on: February 25, 2003, 01:09:05 AM »
Hi,
my 10Gb HD is dying, I´ve lost 1 partition by now, so I´m using the 30Gb HD that was waiting for the A1.

I have installed OS3.5 in it but can´t see more than 8Gb for partitioning the drive. How can I use the rest of it? It´s on a A1200 with a 4 way IDE adapter. Thanks for the help.

@ Enrique

I had problems when I got a bigger HD a while ago. I had to upgrade the GURU-ROM, it solved the problem.
Now I have Guru-Rom v6.

I'm not sure if it's a problem with OS 3.5 or what.

I'm using a 40 gig hard drive (four separate 10 gig partitions) with my A1200. But I'm also using OS 3.9; that might make a difference.

Maybe 3.9 can handle those HD sizes.

I´ll try using the HDToolBox from it them.

Thanks.

First; I'm not an expert on this. The GURU ROM (Read Only Memory) is a chip that controls certain parts of the system. I do not know exactly what it's doing, but I do know that the old GURU must be replaced if you're going to use a large HD. But I'm not saying for sure that this is causing your problem.

I have an A4000, and the old GURU (it was v4.5) only accepted HDs up to about 4 GB. I got it upgraded to v6 (GVP). I don't remember how big HD I can use now, but 10 GB is no prob.
The price for a GVP GURU v6 was about 70$ a year ago.

Hi emeck,

I had the very same problem with my 1200. Here's
what I did.

HD Toolbox was not reading/interpreting the
information from the drive properly, so my first
step was to manually enter the proper information
into HD Toolbox (this info should hopefully be
printed on the outside of the drive). After this,
you may partition your drive accordingly, save
changes and re - format your partitions.

Also, I very strongly urge you to use an alternative
file system in conjunction with this method, such as
PFS 3. The direct-scsi filesystem version of PFS 3
works excellent on the built in IDE of the 1200.
This will ensure that no information will be lost
when using the upper portions (over 4gb) of the
drive. Using FFS may require other methods to
insure the safety of your information when writing
above the 4gb mark on big drives.

Obviously, it would be best to format and partition
your new drive from whatever OS (3.5?) is on your old
drive, before it's completely dead. Then it's a real
pain.

Since you are using the built in IDE of the 1200,
there are no GURU roms or anything to worry about
hardware - wise.

You may want to research this topic a bit, this
was only my method; there are others. This setup
works excellent for my 1200, and PFS 3 is a great
addition regardless, since it speeds disk access
and lacks the validation problems of FFS.

I couldn´t find anything about Guru ROM and A1200, except for SCSI ones. I use de A1200 IDE port so I´ve try other things. Thanks for the info.

Live long and prosper

Ok, I´ll try that. I can´t boot from my old HD ´cause it displays a message saying that partition HD2 hasn´t ffinished a transfer and will finish it now. The HD led goes on but the drive doesn´t work and machine doesn´ t boot.

When booting with OS3.0 floppy I can see the first two partitions, not the last 3 ones. So I´ll try to setup the new disk as you say, then connect both and copy the old boot partition over the new one. I´m using SFS on the old disk.

Or maybe I´ll do a clean new installation on the new harddisk. Using a second temporary boot partition I should be able to install SFS on the Workbench partition and then on the others.

I´ll keep you posted.

Cool, SFS is great. As long as you can get HD
Toolbox configured to show the 30 gigs it should
be fine with SFS.

Finally, I made it. It was a problem with the HDToolbox of the AOS3.0.

I installed over it AOS3.5, used the new HDToolbox and read the HD info. All worked but I lost the AOS3.5 install.

So I booted with the AOS3.0 floppy and installed it again. No probleam ´cause it was able se all the partitions created with 3.5

Now I have again AOS3.5 with SFS in all my partitions and a lot of 2.0Gb partitions.

Thanks for the help

Enrique :-D
