Alien Breed 3D
« on: July 11, 2004, 10:06:07 PM »
Hey all I just won Alien Breed 3D on ebay for £2.25! I just wanted to ask what can I expect when I get it, in terms of quality and speed. I've got an A1200 '030 @ 50Mhz with 8mb Fastram, will it work well on this setup, and does anyone know where I can find some screenshots?

Cheers

I'm not sure your set-up will be sufficient to do this game justice.

I ran it on an A1200 with 40Mhz 040 and 32Mb of fast Ram.  If I recall even that didn't give a great frame rate.  My accelerator has long since died.

On the positive side, you have a got a very good game for a great price.  I remember physically jumping at some points in the game, it was that captivating.  I guess it may not have the same effect these days though.  I don't recall if I ever completed it, it was tough.

Anyways, good luck when it arrives.

PS.  I'm sure there were options to degrade the graphics etc to make the game playable on a system such as yours.

Hi Robert
I had the same setup as you and tried this game.
The performance wasnt too great to  be brutally honest.
The 2Mb version ran okay, but still not great, and the graphics are very pixelated.

The 4Mb version looks better, but is very slow unless your Amiga is really accelerated.

How coincidental that this should come up. I just revisited an old mod I made for AB3D2 with new texutes/effects/models. I uploaded some screenshots of it and mentioned it over on aw.net...

here

-edit-

Incidentally, do you mean AlienBreed 3D or AlienBreed 3D II ?

HopperJF: You're talking about TKG. He was talking about AB3D 1, which is quite playable on 030/50.

Anyway, if you're going to play AB3D (which is a very good game, and much more fun than its disappointing sequal), you should check out PatchAB3D on my website.

@xeron

If you can get / know of a *stable* RTG version of TKG I'd be very interested to know :-D

I tried to assemble the sources myself to get into it but it's such a mess I wasnt even sure where to begin :-/

Alien Breed 3D should run quite nicely on your setup. I heard the
first one was much better than the 2nd.

Alien Breed 3D2: The Killing Grounds was horribly slow on even a
Blizzard 1260 + 16mb RAM for some reason.

It tried out polygons with lightsourcing etc. but was quite slow.
However it did have some fantastic lighting effects, sounds and
textures.

I think there was a jetpack in it too, or a way to cheat to get the
jetpack.

:-)

There is an RTG patch on Aminet for TKG, and also an '060 patch for
Breathless.

Personally I prefer Genetic Species which is extremely fun and has 3D
looking graphics with a good framerate and sound.

AFAIK there is no stable RTG version, just the standard crash-happy one. This isn't a surprise, though, the games were extraordinarily badly coded ;) Don't get me wrong, the first one is a great game, and the second one is impressive for the time, but the code is such a horrible mess, how they managed to make it as stable as it is is beyond me :)

Of course! My apoliogies, your system is probably fine for the job then.

No kidding. I spent a solid month with DevPac attempting to assemble the source but couldn't get far at all. I figured just getting the exe to build would be a milestone towards a CGX version. It never happened.

Had to laugh at some of the function names though

Yes this is one top game, and ran amazingly on my A1200 T (same spec as Robert's - 030/50 with 8meg).

Another good doom clone which rarely gets mentioned is a game caled BrainKiller (I think) which was featured on the July 1997 Amiga Format CD.
Its got good graphics and plays well on such a system. Freeware too I think.

Greatest Hits

That's a really funny website.

I checked the discography - no discs produced to date
but it says check upcoming gigs...

I tried Upcoming gigs - er, none.

I tried previous gigs - er, none. they've never played anywhere...

They are currently looking for a singer.

AB3D2, ah what a game! When it came it was finally a game you could showe up the nose of your pc owning friends saying HA! It have never played it in full-screen with full speed though. Perhaps I get a chance now when I am buying a new machine. We really should go together and make an expansion for it using the build in editor. Would be cool...

Alien Breed 3D2: The Killing Grounds is nowhere near as good as it was
made to look.

Back in 1996 in the UK a company called Gordon Harwoods really pushed
the Blizzard accelerators and when the Blizzard 1260 came out they
gave everyone a free copy of AB3D2:TKG with it.

Unfortunately the '060 cost like £600 UKP at the time!

I was a little dissapointed at how slow it played on A1200 + '060 at
full screen and I bought the '060 2nd hand for £180!

The main problem with an '060 in an A1200 is the AGA chipset. There is
an imbalance of CPU/GFX power and really we needed an integrated
accelerator/GFX card long before the still not-so-compact PPC+BVision
combo.

Anyone ever tried that Doom clone on Aminet where you played a guy
with hedgecutters going around killing hippies? I think it was a
parody of Doom's chainsaw.

:-D :-D :-D

I got AB3D for my unexpanded CD32 for the Christamas it came out and played it loads, but got stuck on level 4. I have played it on WinUAE and on my A1200 ('050 processor, 32 MB Fast RAM) but don't seem to remember any improvement over playing it on the CD32.

There was something in the manual about pressing a joypad button if you had FastRAM installed and it would improve performance, but I never found this option, so assumed it got left out of final game.

I got AB3DII when I bought my Blizzard '030 from Gordon Harwoods. I enjoyed playing it but couldn't get past the second level.

I have managed to install and run AB3DII on WINUAE/AIAB using the retarg patch off Aminet. It seems quite stable.
