Im not actually trying to be obtuse here :) I had a hard time finding hard specs at a brief glance onthe CUSA site. It was all scattered throughout the place I looked.

Sorry, I checked again and you're right, the info is spread all over the place.
So, for your $595.

C64x Basic:
Intel® Atom D525 1.80GHz (fastest current Atom)
Mini ITX motherboard based on the Intel NM10 chipset with Nvidia Ion graphics (DX10 compatible)
Multi format card reader
2GB DDR2 memory
160GB hard drive
No DVD drive*
No wifi*
* included in the $695 C64x Standard (which includes a larger 250GB hard drive)

160 GB hard drive, where do you find them that small?  2 GB ram in 2011?  Underwhelming to say the least.

Hey, wow, that's slightly nicer than my $350 netbook from 2009! Only they've traded the screen for a DVD drive!

2GB of RAM should be plenty to run any C64 application you throw at it.

Actually for linux, 2 gigs of RAM is plenty. I have 4 gigs in my desktop and rarely if ever exceed 50% in use. Swap is never touched at all.

I guess you could price match against a netbook or a desktop system too, for full comparison. I picked system 76 on purpose, as linux installed machines is a niche market, and comparing to something like Fry's electronics (one of my fave's) or best buy would be unfair.

I wasn't aware OS4 had been ported to it.

OS4 doesn't run C64 apps anyway.

So the C64x is a poor techinical spec for the cost and C=USA will be trading on it's past name and nostalgic value. Both Apple and Sony do this and they appear to be doing quite well out of it...

Actually no, C64 is available at http://www.viceteam.org FOR FREE WITH FREE ROMs without the pathetic encryption of C64 Forever which ruins and frustrates the whole emulator experience.

I was wondering how many people have already pre-ordered the C64x today or
is planning too very soon.

Quote
"During our brief interview, Altman said the company is “already sold out  on the first two production runs.” Altman explained that the company is  able to produce an average of 60,000 machines per month, which leads us  to believe that in less than 48 hours they’ve experienced a brisk run  of pre-order sales." Written by Jason Evangelho with The Video Game Writers
Well, it would be interesting to determine what exactly would be a production run in units produced, then we could get an idea of pre-orders somewhat.  As I would expect that Altman would keep his cost down by not carrying an extended inventory which would have to be stored.

You must be really envious of the new commodore for all the comments. I also have a netbook, I haven't seen any that will take 4gb, or dvd drives. the keyboard really isn't comparable either. I mean at 6'2" my hands are kinda too big to do anything other than one finger pokes on most laptops. However, I have become very comfortable with the C64 keyboard in the 30 years I have been using them.

Very true.  If each production run lasted only one day then they've sold 4000 units.  Then there's the word "able", which could mean "if we all take cocaine and work without any toilet breaks for 24 hours straight".  In that case we could be looking at 1400+/-.  On other hand, we could be looking at 120,000.
