Beneath a Steel Sky manual installation?
« on: August 04, 2009, 02:46:03 PM »
Hi,

Does anyone know how to manually install Beneath a Steel Sky to hard drive? The installer refused to accept disk 12, so I tried to work out how to manually copy the files, but found the hard drive install structure to be highly confusing (it had folders for each disk, but some disks that had not yet been installed had files, and some that had been installed did not. In addition, there were seemingly blank files named SteelSkyDisk[disk number] or something like that in some of the folders. The install program is called hdinst.

Thanks, Matt

I would personally suggest trying to find a Beneath A Steal Sky disk 12 disk image. Or failing that a  pre made WHDLoad image of the game. Seems to me it would cause you less hassle.

Good luck.

Just download it as Leander suggested, it's abandonware. You can download it from here; http://free-game-downloads.mosw.com/abandonware/amiga/games_ba_be/beneath_a_steel_sky.html

Err, chaps - There was a reason I didn't put direct links to such - it's against the TOS and puts Amiga.org in a very dicey position legally - PM them to him by all means, but keep it off the public channel.

Err leander, back2roots is quite known for having installs which have been released as freeware by the devs.

-edit-
Ah, I guess you were referring to that other moneygrabbing site. 7USD per day for downloading games, heh.

You should be able to use ADF2DISK to rewrite your 12th disk.  You will need the ADF for the 12th disk though.  Beneath a Steel Sky is Freeware and if you are interested it's also available for free (but for the PC) at gog.com (legally).  Also - from Revolution (the developer) web site "In August 2003, BASS was made available for free download and is now classed as freeware. The sources and resource files are available from http://www.scummvm.org Using this new engine, BASS can be played on XP, MacOS, Linux, Amiga and pocketPC. Revolution extends its thanks to the SCUMMVM team for all their hard work in bringing the game back to life. Enjoy! "

By the sounds of it you can use the SCUMMVM engine for the Amiga to play it.

Use ScummVM, revolution software have released the full game for free use in the ScummVM engine. I suggest using the full version with the speech :)

Lure of the Temptress is also brilliant!
