.ADF files from the PC to an Amiga 500
« on: February 13, 2004, 05:14:14 PM »
I have seen threads in here on how to do this, but I was unable to find them. I am going to buy an Amiga 500 from eBay as they seem to be the most compatiable with the games I want to play (judging from feedback on these forums). My question is what is the easiest way of transferring .ADF files from a PC over to an Amiga 500 so I can use them? I can't seem to find some of the age old classics I enjoyed playing, like Carrier Command, Elite, Pirates and Battle Chess on disks, unless I want to shell out $5 o $10 each.

Could someone provide me with a walkthrough, or hardware links on something that I can buy to do this?

Thanks in advance!

PS: My main PC is running Windows XP and I'll end up buying an Amiga 500, with 1.3 roms!

This is the machine I was looking to buy: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2787025673&category=4598

Answers will vary depending on what comes with the '500. If it has enough RAM, and the M$ Basic disk you can use a serial port... gah can't remember name of the program right now, but either way, you'll want atleast a meg or so of RAM, cause of ADFs being 880Kb, and you needing the floppy drive to burn the image to. .DMS files are a bit smaller though.

Best way would be to just use WinUAE if you have a PC, but you can take the files and zip them using split mode. Split the files in half and put them on a 720kb disk. Copy the zip files to your A500 RAM disk and then unzip them and use transADF to write it back to an Amiga disk. No easy way to do it.

2nd way.

Use a null modem cable from your PC to the A500. Using a terminal program on both computers connect and "upload" the adf file to the A500 RAM drive again and do the sme thing. If you only get an A500 with 512kb of RAM your screwed because it just wont work.

I suggest trying this one.

All you need is WB disks. The ADF is transferred directly to the disk, so no need to store it RAM.

Thanks for the quick responses. It's either that machine or this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2786285106&category=4598

I don't really mind the cost of either (obviously)! I just want to make sure that for what I want, just playing some of the old games, that there is a deadfire way of doing it. Thoughts??

I reccomend Cloanto's AmigaExplorer. I bought it a year (or two years?) ago and it was really easy to install and perfect for backing up games and putting ADF's back on disk. There's also another program wich is free, but then you need Basic on your Amiga. For this program you need at least WB1.2 on disk or so.

Ok ... looks like I am going to purchase a new Amiga 1200, from here --> http://www.compuquick-amigadirect.com/cgi-bin/shop/shop.cgi?keywords=_amiga_systems&cart_id=8127571_5488

unless someone could point me to another location for a similar type unit. Whether it be a 500, 600, or 600HD. I just need something!!!! Here is the question, which I am somewhat still confused on. I need to transfer ADF files from my PC. It looks like this Amiga is running WB 3.1 - so if you could tell me a sure fire way of transferring these disks, I would appreciate it. Also, if I need to buy any hardware to do this, like a null modem cable, could you please let me know where to buy these as well!

Thanks in advance!

As I mentioned before, AmigaExplorer works fab.
And buying a null-modem cable? Every dedicated computer/electronics shops has one.
