Anyone got the 68k version of ADescent Warp3D
working ?

I can get the the game to load but the screen jumps about making it impossible to play.

Running on a 68040+128M
Mediator and Voodoo3 3000

Cheers

Dave

ADescent Warp3D only really properly works on ViRGEs (and possibly permedia) because it is hardcoded to use 15bit graphics. It used to run great on my CV64/3D.

The best i got it to do was show the level on my Voodoo, all text and overlays were black because of being the wrong pixel format.

Hiya Dave,

Yup, the game runs on your system combination as I have played it on my machine. I cant exactly recall exactly what settings are required for you to run but you do need the screenmodes that thegame needs in your picasso96 screenmode selection. (At work at the mo so I cant look into the settings properly for you :-/)

It used to run really well, rarely dropped bellow 30fps, on my 060 it used to be up in the 50-60fps iirc (dropping when you have multiple bad guys on screen)

cant offer much more advice than that though, sorry :-/

Yeah, I forgot that - its still very playable though and runs damn well :-) all you have to do is avoid the black splodgey enemie fire shapes and pick up the black weapon shapes

Hi Sam,

Be greatful if you could let us know what screenmodes your using, The screenmode requester only lists 16bit and above modes
and I have the same problem on each one.

Cheers

Dave.

On a side note, is the SAS/C compiler still available anywhere for sale?  I knew they sold out and only provided patches on their website.

Ah, what am I thinking?  Even if I could find it somewhere, I don't have a real Amiga anymore, so I couldn't read the disks (unless I shelled out some $$$ for a catweasel adapter).  I guess GCC is the way to go.  It's a slow compiler though.

As long as I had CVPPC + CGX in my A4kPPC, I had no problems to run ADescentW3D 68k or PPC. But now, with Voodoo3/Prometheus/P96 the PPC version doesn't run at all and the 68k version runs
(quite nice and fast) with black sprites.

I'm wondering how tough it would be to rebuild with other screenmode color depths...

To be honest, there is quite some stuff in Descent that would come out differently if we where to do it again. Descent was our first port ever, and you tend to learn over time.  The strange build process was one of them.

The software renderer works under 8 bit modes IIRC, and even supports EHB on ECS machines. The W3D renderer only supported 15 bits, but that is basically only a matter of a few lines of source changes in the shading tables - some stuff is still drawn with software directly to the screen. I think Peter Annuss fixed that when he did the WarpUp port.

I'm still hoping Outrage will at some point open-source Descent III  :-)
Look out, I\'ve got a gun

Another annoying thing about Descent Warp3D is that it only works with AHI4 - AHI5 (which is faster on my system) gives no sound. It's the only thing I've come across that doesn't like AHI5.

It fly on my 060+Mediator+Voodoo3

The only poblem is the black shots. I write to hyperion times ago, they reply to me saying that it is an OLD port, written only for Virge, it should be rewrited but they don't have time for this.
