Title: Quake2 PowerPC Exception
Post by: a1200freak on June 14, 2007, 09:23:57 PM
Hi all,

I always get a PowerPC Exception when I want to load a game in Quake 2. If I play from the beginning everything works good.

I have a A1200, BPPC 060/200, G-REX, Voodoo3 3000, OS3.9 BB2, WOS 5.1, Warp3D 4.2a.

I also got the exception with an A4000D with CSPPC, G-REX ...

Does anyone have the same problems ?

Regards

Reiner

I too have csppc/233mhz and g-rex4000D/voodoo3 and it sucks!

Have you updated (http://www.hyperion-entertainment.biz:8080/download/Downloads/games/quake2) your Quake 2 (you need to login first :-))? Also note that don't use any other PPC/WarpOS app when running Quake 2 (you are using WarpOS 5.1 right?). It might also be an overheating problem on the PPC, proper cooling advised.

Q2 runs perfect on my setup without any problems :)

really? how many fps u get then?
when I tried it on the A1200/ppc-200mhz setup it was crawling! 7-10fps, I thought even double for the csppc it does not worth the trouble!
also I don't have any updates...

@Bamiga2002

Yes, I have installed the updates.

There are no other PPC/WOS apps running.

I use WOS 5.1, Warp3D 4.2a.

I don't think it's a cooling problem. If I play from beginning I don't get a Exception and can play for one or more hours.

I get 35 to 40 fps on my Amiga 4000, 604e 233mhz, with Prometheus + Voodoo3 3000.

@Keropi
Yes the tower was ready and i used it for a day or two, then the Mediator went bust . Some driver problem like i explained at EAB. Now the Mediator is at Elbox, they should repair it or send a replacement. I'm still waiting...

do you have "menory protection" disabled in WOS pref?
and try to disable waitstates (at least for PPC) in the memory section of the BPPC/CSPPC early startup menu.

Which demo did you timedemo?

PS. Timerefresh is useless as benchmark, the actual speed depends on the location you're at (face floor and you get uberhigh framerates).
Title: Re: Quake2 PowerPC Exception
Post by: zipper on June 15, 2007, 06:14:07 PM
The timerefresh published should be done on the default starting position.

Post by: Piru on June 15, 2007, 07:04:50 PM
timerefresh, even if from the default starting position, is still very limited benchmark. timedemo is much better, and gives much better idea of the actual framerate during the gameplay.

I disabled "memory protection" in WOS prefs.
Then I put the RAM settings to No Read/Write Waitstate for PPC and 68k. The result was the same as before: PowerPC Exception.

Then I put the RAM settings to Read/Write Waitstate for PPC and 68k. And now it works.

No it does not work. It worked two times and then again I get PowerPC exceptions.

Sorry could'nt tell you how many I get, I just know it plays fine without any stutters or lag unlike that waste of money heretic 2. But anyway is there a program that displays FPS or do I need to use a command?

in console:
Code: [Select]

timedemo 1
map demo1.dm2

Once the demo is done, the result will end up in the console.

You'll prolly also want to run the demo2:
Code: [Select]

map demo2.dm2

(there's some disagreement which demo is the "industry standard" demo to run, so it's better to run both)

try with this powerpc.library (and waistates DISABLED for PPC)

powerpc.library V16 1beta (http://devnull.owl.de/~frank/powerpc_V16_1beta.lha)

sometimes it helps.

I ran both timedemos and the results where:

map 1
689 frames, 49.7 seconds: 13.9 fps

map 2
618 frames, 46.3 seconds: 13.3 fps

driver: miniGL no LRU
screenmode: Fullscreen 640x480

I have the same problem with Quake2. If i try loading my saved game it crashes with a PowerPC exception. If i play from the start the game's OK. Weird...  :-?

@Bamiga2002

Finally somebody with the same problems. I was asking myself if I was the only one.

Did you try the powerpc.library 16.1 Beta and the different PPC RAM settings ?

What config dou you have ?

I'm using the powerpc.library 16.1beta all the time and ppc memory settings are at 60ns. I put my config in my sig. Gonna try testing the game some more.

u actually find q2 playable at this framerate? wow...!
I actually abandonned the classic-Q2 , and currenlty re-play it on my G4/pegII ... I will try it though on MOS-PUP too to see the difference...

My savegames worked OK now! I changed from MiniGL NOLRU --> MiniGL, after that they loaded fine! I loaded the game just after WB had loaded.

AFAIK leaving the memory settings to 60 ns (best option), means "waitstates ON" for both 68K and PPC.

Better to ask for confirmation to Piru.

Waitstates & preloads ON requires 50ns SIMMs, otherwise the Miggy is prone to crashes...

I have a 60ns SIMM and i have set everything to ON and my system runs stable. Perhaps i have a really good SIMM.

Sorry , i meant Waitstates & Preloads *OFF* needs good quality SIMMs or 50ns ones. Maybe i had bad quality because i had crashes when i set PPC memory speed to max.

This was the right hint. After cold boot the saved games are loading. After warm boot I get the PowerPC Exception again. No way I´m happy now.

Thank you

Where can i get the 'setmemmode' proggy? Does it make any difference setting the memory from BPPC-menu or with 'setmemmode'?
