PRESS RELEASE
Date: June 6th, 2011
This announcement already went out by telegraph on accident and is burning up the wires so we are also releasing it here one day early. To Celebrate it's 16th Birthday DiscreetFX is once again helping the Amiga community by Launching Project Metropolis.
http://www.discreetfx.com/ProjectMetropolis.html
What is Project Metropolis you might ask? It is a Instant Download Application Storefront for Amiga OS 4.x, MorphOS, AROS and Classic Amiga. We will not only sell our own applications there, we will sell 3rd party programs as well. A very generous revenue share has been setup for the developer and is paid monthly.
3rd Party developer gets 80%
DiscreetFX gets 20%
The application approval process is very easy and the market will decide which apps are good or bad not DiscreetFX. Now, finally customers will have a central place to buy and Instantly Download their Amiga OS 4.x, MorphOS, AROS and Classic Amiga apps. Developers can focus on creating their great applications and even games, then be confidant users will actually see them since there will be a quick cloud based solution for customers to buy them.
Welcome to the unified future of buying all your Amiga OS4.x, MorphOS, AROS & Classic Amiga commercial applications in one place. Free programs are of course available from AmiNet like they have been for many years.
If you are a developer and wish to contact us about this venture please use the link below. Great developers and DiscreetFX partnering together is what will make this a fantastic success.

Hmm, interesting. Now I really need to develop something for the Amiga...

Can you really call yourself a startup while celebrating your 16th year? :)
I'm hoping this platform will encourage former developers who don't want to release their old software as freeware to at least make it available again commercially - Final Writer, Wordworth, Envoy, AmIRC come to mind as examples.
-
Hmm, interesting also. So this what metropolis is. I thought it was going to be a graphics program like Aladdin. But i'm curious, why did you name is Metropolis (great movie by the way)?
:)
-
A great idea and something Amiga Inc should have done years ago via their website if they had been serious about making money and developing the Amiga name.
Good luck.
-
@ Kesa
The mediator between hands and head?
(OT: Incidentally, I saw Alloy Orchestra (http://alloyorchestra.com/)'s live accompaniment to Metropolis not too long ago - fantastic!)

I agree but to do so would have required them to spend money and *cough* have a vision...
@DiscreetFX. Not to be too personal but how much did it cost to set something like this up and how difficult was it to do? The obvious comparison i can think of is Apple with itunes which being Apple must have cost a fortune with great difficulty...
-
WOW! This is really great! I was NOT expecting this at all! Being a long time user of stores like GOG.com, I think this is a really smart and great thing to do for the Amiga community. THANKS DiscreetFX!
Now I really DO need to make that game that will be totally addictive, have multiplayer on-line play and work on all diferent types of Amiga flavors...:roflmao:
I'm excited to see how fast things will get on to it. It may even be a great way to attract older developers who have had or thought of moving on to think again.
Just me being optimistic I guess :)
-
I must say it sounds very interesting for me as a developer. I will keep an eye on the project and its progress.
-
I look forward to seeing it.
-
Great idea. I am waiting for more details. I hope it will become standard in ami-world.

DiscreetFX is very different today from when it was just a Video Toaster tutoring service in 1995. Yes, since it is a part time venture we can still call ourselves a startup.
-
This is a good idea you guys. Thanks for supporting all Amiga platforms.
-
Please note Project Metropolis launches on July 6th for TriCaster, VT[5], SpeedEDIT 2 and LightWave 3D in addition to the June 6th Amiga based storefront.

We only told Orson Wells about it.

THAT fat bastard? Him and his snow peas are dead to me!!

Got my attention, hope it will work out; I would buy something

sounds like a good idea

@ Pyromania
Is this the answer to the question you asked a few months back, (can't recall the exact word or thread) where you asked us to guess what DiscreetFX had in store for the future... :)
Nice idea though, hope it's successful... :)
Often wondered why there was no such service on the net for the Amiga...
Now what you really need to sell are Workbench Disk Sets 1.x to 3.x... :) (good luck with that one if you do)... ;)
PS: You could add Irn Bru and Macaroon Bars for instant download, be a big hit in the states as the tourists snap em up here every summer...:)
-
How about a Amiga video service?
I do not want to go to youtube for everything.
-
So the Amiga variants will now have their own App store. Pretty cool!
And yes the movie Metropolis was awesome, especially the version mixed with Pink Floyd (Echoes of Metropolis).
-
It would be nice if you secured some rights to some old Amiga games as well, so I could finally pay back a little to the people who MADE the stuff I once played from floppy disks with games names poorly penned on by pencils ..... "Good Old (Amiga) Games .."
BUT I guess it would be hopeless to get any of this money to the original authors :-S
This could be a nice way to aquire games for the FPGA machines as well ! In addition to the games Cloanto and others supply ..
-
Hope this works :) and makes software developers more motivated and take new projects.
Netsufr for 68k amigas would be good start

Yeah. I hope this goes better than the Hottie game competition a few years back.
-
This is good news.
You should call it an app store though.
And maybe you could include Aminet results in your searches on the front end as well.
That would be class.
-
Ere... Tension... :)
I thought you left a wee while back... ;)
-
Thanks for implementing this. It is a good idea and long overdue. It's always good to have a central place to buy apps so you can compare first. It should also encourage good competition.
-
Maybe some years ago, when the main internet applications for the amiga are on the market, but now you cant purchase a keyfile for the latest ibrowse or the same for makecd some months ago. These days is diffucult to find applications that need payment, greatest applications are free at this times (at least).
-
Reminds me of the Atari Program Exchange (APX) way back in the Elder Days.

MakeCD was made free years ago (I bought it when it was a commercial product) only to find about a year later it was now free, win some lose some I guess... :)
-
Quick, Franko make a post! Your activity bar has fallen to 99%!
@everyone. Sorry for the sarcasm and completely over the top post ;)
-
Great news! Looking forward to see how it works! :)
-
Good look and hope the project does well, I hope you do put in some work into maybe making old games and software on the store, I'm surpise Amikit did'nt jump on this one, we needed a download commercial store for a while.
keep my eyes on it.
-
Thank you for finally implementing this highly anticipated service, and for providing some much-needed leadership for the Amiga community! I hope that some unreleased commercial games like Babylonian Twins and Aviators will be sold through Project Metropolis.
I also agree that free software should also be listed through here, even if it is only selected software from Aminet, similar to the approved packages provided by Linux distributions.
Please keep us posted, I'm very curious about more details!
-
Got my attention too....
This just might be a great idea. Maybe we'll see more programmers pop out of the woodwork now.
-
Well, congratulations on sixteen years of starting up, I guess.
I'm glad my Amiga doesn't start up that slow.
-
Moving the officially announced launch date by two days makes not so good forecast for the future. Maybe it is just another lame marketing "puzzle". If so, please stop it. It is just pitiful.

Sorry for the delay, no puzzles to be found here.
