BB3 & BB4 - What do I REALLY need in there?
« on: February 18, 2018, 10:50:42 PM »
Greetings.

After fighting an epic battle that shall go in the anals of my memory, I was finally able to get my Retina BLTII Z3 card working on my A3000 in 3.9 using P96.  I was getting the dread Guru 800004 error... and never got a signal out of the card itself.  I tried a multitude of different things... installing libraries... reinstalling the OS a gazillion times, animal sacrifices etc etc etc

Finally, I tried installing P96 after a clean 3.9 install with only BB1 and BB2.  It worked.  My god.  It was incredible!

Just as a test, I installed BB3&4 on top of THAT installation... and yep... right back to the guru.  Fortunately, I made a backup of the working system and I went back to that state without a problem.

So... I'm new-ish to post WB 1.3 Amigas... what is in BB3&4 that I really need?  And can I get those individual parts via Aminet?  I don't know what in BB3&4 the Retina and P96 didn't like...  so obviously I don't want that (testing could eventually find the culprit.)

So far, working on an Amiga with only BB1&2, I've only noticed the shell... no autocomplete.  I know BB3&4 had some added internet stuff... I don't think I need that as RoadShow seems to do the job.

Thanks!

I've read a lot lately about the indifference to BB3&4. I did a google search for you - pick thru this stuff... it's quite interesting. There are some topics over on EAB that describe how you can pick out the good stuff from BB3&4. Shhhh, don't let OldsMike know about this thread! I've had BB3&4 trash a few installs so I quit installing it! There's a BB3/4 combo patch now you know.

Isn't it funny (yea, hilarious) how it only takes years to stumble onto solutions to Amiga software patches!!! :roflmao:

Geeze you guys. The changelog for BB3&4 is clear and public knowledge, not some big dark secret.

Go here and read the entire thing:

http://amigan.1emu.net/releases/BoingBags3&4.readme

Or if you prefer, download just the individual components off Aminet. As they're listed in the *cough cough* changelog linked to above. :p

I have a video on YouTube how to install it, hardly rocket science (as long as you don't make any dumb mistakes like forgetting to make your partition bootable).

Ummmm, thanks Mike! :) This ONE I bookmarked! You have a vid on just installing BB3&4? Hmmm, can't find it.

I see you have a new vid on the AmigaKit scroll mouse... I was gonna ask if you got that sorted. No answer from AmigaKit? Harumph!

I hope the OP does not mind me asking, is WB 1.3 worth modifying or should I upgrade to 2.x or 3.x?
Is WB 1.3 able to have themes and back drops like the later OSes?

Sure, but you'll have to run a dozen or so additional hacks and patches just to duplicate what 3.x already has built-in. Hence, the reason why people upgrade to newer OS's. ;)

I haven't bothered with BB3 & 4 either. I think there's a patch in there that speeds up icon display times but life's too short to hack it beyond BB2 IMHO.

If you only install one upgrade beyond the base BB2, make sure it's the fabulous Peter K. Icon.library. :)

Thanks, I guess that is why I never have seen it done on WB 1.3.

That's a must have indeed, it massively speeds up icon loading on OS3.9.
I also hand picked the good stuff from BB3&4, it trashed some fresh installs for me too.

@PPC:

That's not really helpful, can you be more specific about what it "trashed"? And which version of BB3&4 you used?

I really appreciate the input.  I feel like an idiot not to just look at the README from bb3&4.

That said, great to have your opinions.

I should probably just get KingCON from Aminet... as that's that main thing I'm noticing at this moment.

Maybe I'll slowly add stuff, backing up as I go, as I'm really curious what would be the thing that made P96 croak.  (I know I'm not the only one that had this problem...)

I'll def add the icon libraries.

OS3.9 comes with ViNCEd that is way better than KingCON. Unless you spend a lot of time booting into first CLI (booting without startup-sequence) and want more than commodore CON in the kickstart, you are way better off using ViNCEd.

Bonus feature is that Thomas Richter is here to offer support as well.

(Which reminds me of a "bug" I should have reported)

Something to be aware of on A3000/A4000, BB3/4 installs card.resource which will make your machine crash randomly or during boot.

This is not supposed to be there for big box machines and it is only for A1200 or A600.  Hopefully some day this will be fixed.
