Anyone got an ATI 5770 graphics card
« on: March 16, 2011, 08:54:27 PM »
Hi,

I'm thinking of getting one of these graphics cards and was wondering what people think of them? £100 seems to be a decent price but I haven't kept upto date on the PC card market so not too sure how it should perform.

Any advice is appreciated.

Cheers.

I don't have one, but from everything I've read it seems like it's an excellent card for the money.

They were good cards about 3 years ago. They are very cheap today and you can get passively cooled ones.

£100 for a second hand seems a bit pricey as they are less than that new.

You should be able to get one for about £60 off eBay... less if you're prepared to ship rather than collect.

I got one in my PC and I'm more than happy with it.  I got it last April when it was third best performing card in ATI's HD5000 product line.

I needed a powerful GPU for openCL programming(it can do over 1 TeraFLOPS) and found that it was the best value for money at that time.

I can't talk much about gaming, as I don't play games, but it got really good reviews back when released.  I did instal some technology demos and was really impressed with its speed.  You might want to check Tom's hardware GPU charts and a couple of other PC sites for reviews  (it was released around October 2009).   In general they had nothing but praise for it.

Remember that the PC graphics card market moves fast, and quite a few other cards came out, so it's not cutting edge technology anymore, though as alexh pointed out, £60 for one is a pretty awesome price if you ask me.

With the current market prices I go for an HD6980. I've seen them for under $200.
What were you going to install this in?

100 pounds is the maximum price you should pay for one. I have the 5750 which is a slightly crippled version of the 5770.
Originally I had some problems with Linux, the screen would go black (out-of range screen mode) mid install, but not anymore.
They are quite fast and should handle medium graphics settings fine. I only noticed a slow down on Civ 5 (takes about 2secs to draw the screen) with everything on max, but possibly because there was not enough memory; 1GB graphics, 2GB system.
No problems with any movies.
I believe the 6000 series run cooler.
Check this table to compare models. Pay attention to the memory bit width and the number of texture units etc.:

 Hi,

I have been using a 5770 now for about one year, and yes it does play the games fast, I haven't really thought of upgrading as of yet. Have had no problems, with the card. I play fallout 3, fallout new Vegas, far cry, far cry 2, half life, half life 2, some ubisoft cowboy game queverus, Tom Clancys Rainbow Six, Left for dead, left for dead 2, Assassin's Creed and how to shoot a scott bending over showing his askum while wearing a kilt. The last game is the most exciting, you can shoot the left or right one for 25 points, the one in the lowest center is worth 50, but if you shoot too high and hit him in the center he smiles and yells ( Do it again sam) and remember as the game goes on he wiggles his askum just a little bit faster every time, plus if you miss and hit elsewhere you lose 25 points.

Hi,

@Franko,http://www.amiga.org/forums/images/icons/icon10.gif

First thing you have to have is the sanity to have a modern computerhttp://www.amiga.org/forums/images/icons/icon9.gif

The second thing you have to have is the sanity to know how to use ithttp://www.amiga.org/forums/images/icons/icon8.gif

The third thing is you have to forget that it isn't an Amigahttp://www.amiga.org/forums/images/icons/icon10.gif

That's way too much. Theyre only about $130 brand new (about 90 poundds). As for the person that said they were good 3 years ag. They sure would have been. Especially seeing as they were only release about 18 months ago  :)
If you can afford a few extra dollars though an Nvidia 460 is a great guy, but the radeon 5770 is quite nice for the money too.

Near as I can tell this is where I write something under the guise of being innocuous, but really its a pot shot at another persons/peoples choice of Amiga based systems. Unfortunately only I cant see how transparent and petty it makes me look.

The 6870 is only $50 more, its cooler and outperforms the 5770.
But like I said, what do you plan to run this in? Is there a drivers for the 6970?

I have installed one into my Mac Pro (1gb) and it works a treat. I run 2 x 20" screens and the occasional game and seems to do fine.

I am no hard core gamer though.
