Amigaos 4.1 - Intel i5 Mac
« on: May 02, 2010, 10:27:26 AM »
Hi I have what maybe a stupid question, what can I run Amigaos 4.1 on? I have a Intel i5 27" iMac, can I use Bootcamp and install on that? Or I have an AMD Athlon in the loft somewhere........

I've got a standard A1200 with internal hard drive with Workbench 3.1, which I did think about putting in a tower and upgrading - is it worth it?

Cheers

UAE is the answer.

Amiga OS 4.1 will only run AmigaOne, Sam440 and Pegasos 2 boards which are all PowerPC based.

Amiga OS 4.1 will never run on x86 PC or MAC boards.

You could run AROS, or rather IcAROS which is a nice distribution.

And this is exactly why they're never going to make a profit off it. :(

There is a version of Amiga OS 4.0 which will run on a 1200 but will need a Blizzard PowerPC board.

Just pop your old Amiga HD into a regular PC and boot it up via WinUAE/E-UAE :)

The only way I see them releasing AmigaOS on x86 won't be on a PC or MAC x86 but an Amiga x86 board where they have a fixed set of drivers for 1 board but I don't see that happening in the next 5 years.

At the moment they don't even have full drivers for the boards they have already got and with 2 new boards being released that is even more work on more drivers.

Even Mac OS x86 doesn't officially run on PC x86 hardware without using something like Hackintosh which only works on certain boards.

But rather than wait for OS4 on Intel CPUs why not help the AROS project if you can.

Fantastic OS, no decent available hardware to go out and purchase now (AmigaONE is dead) to run the damned thing. If it was possible to get a gigahertz class motherboard to run OS4 I would go out and purchase both tomorrow, it isn't and so therefore I won't.

You have to wonder about the sanity of the OS4 team sometimes, well their managers who dictate direction of the project anyway.

If I had your computers, I would leave the A1200s in their original cases and just get a 8MB RAM card or 030 accelerator and run a nice 3.1 system packed full of games and clasic applications, and install Aros on one of the fast PCs.

The A1200 gives you the best retro experience, and Aros will give you the most modern AmigaOS experience without needing to buy extra hardware. If you want to run OS4, you'd be best to get a SamFlex or wait for the X1000. You could also try MorphOS, which is a faster and more advanced Amiga operating system than any of them, and will give you the ultimate AmigaOS experience with full backward compatibility for applications.

To get started though, download Icaros Desktop Live, burn the DVD, and boot it up on one of your PCs, it's fully usable without even installing.

Probably not, but "NEVER" is an absolute that should not be used, specially by someone who is not in control of what boards or CPU's AmigaOS4.x will be ported to in the future.
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)

If AmigaOS does get ported to x86 it definitely won't be AmigaOS 4.1 which is ported to it and probably won't be any 4.x version either.  It would mostly likely be started from 5.0 for such a big change.

@LordSpunky

As others have said, AmigaOS 4.1 requires AmigaOne, SAM 440 or Pegasos 2.  The upcoming AmigaOne X1000 will also run AmigaOS 4.x.

AmigaOS 4.0 (Classic Version) is available for Amiga 1200 equipped with BlizzardPPC expansion board.  You would have to purchase a BlizzardPPC expansion board.

Current price for AmigaOS 4.0 (Classic Version): £71.51 from amigakit.co.uk

I do not have an A1200 so I don't have any experience with this version of AmigaOS.

AmigaOS 4.0 July 2007 Update ran very nicely on my MicroA1 which has an IBM 750 GX PPC processor.

I am currently running AmigaOS 4.1 Update 2.

My recommendations ...

1)  A1200 ... I agree with Cammy.  "I would leave the A1200s in their original cases and just get a 8MB RAM card or 030 accelerator and run a nice 3.1 system packed full of games and clasic applications"

2) AmigaOS 4.1 ... If you are interested in AmigaOS 4.1, you will have to purchase hardware.
SAM 440 Flex is available now.  Advert says "Amiga X1000.  Coming Summer 2010."

IMHO ... Stay away from used AmigaOne or used MicroA1 hardware unless you know the person selling it.  These boards are no longer manufactured and are very expensive to repair.

BTW ... I am not against any of the other alternative "Amiga-like" systems.  There are many choices, including emulation.
