Anyone have an A1200 "Power Tower"
« on: September 02, 2020, 09:26:43 PM »
I was given one by a friend, who had won it in a drawing.

It has an A1240 accelerator in the single expansion slot, which
means I can't use the 8 MB memory card that I bought from AmigaKit,
but has what appears to be RAM expansion slots. Is that correct?

If so, I'll add memory that way (it only has the 2MB SuperAgnus chip,
which means it barely boots). What sort of memory will it accept?

Regards,
Gary

I think all the 040 accelerators for the A1200 take 72-pin SIMMs, which are easy enough to find second-hand. Which 1240 specifically do you have? e.g., a Blizzard or something else? Some accelerators require certain physical characteristics for their memory--for example, I recall that Blizzard 1240/1260 boards need single-sided SIMMs; if there are chips on both sides it won't fit in the slot.

That should be a pretty zippy system once you get some RAM onboard! :)

I don't know what kind of '040 it is; I can't see any writing on the board.
It has a purple/lavenderviolet-colored fan on it

Are those two white slots on the attached photo indeed RAM slots?
Underneath it says "24 slots"

If so, can you tell what kind of RAM is needed?

Gary

Those are "Z4" slots from one of these Zorro busboards - not related to the accelerator RAM.
It's hard to tell, but I think the accelerator is an Apollo - have a look at the pictures on the two hardware databases and compare. If that's the case, it looks like you'll want a single-sided 32MB SIMM, or two of them if the board has a second slot.

Accelerator is in picture's right side in bottom of it. Visible part is very minimal impossible to say what it is.

You have nice machine.

I found some 32MB EDO RAM for sale. Is EDO potentially a problem?

EDO is fine for the CD32 accelerator: DCE SX32 and the Quikpak 4060T accelerator card and I'm not sure about much else Amiga wise.
