AROS the best chance for x86 Amiga
« on: August 25, 2006, 08:55:32 PM »
It appears that the best chance to ever running on x86 appears to be AROS. I have never gotten AROS to boot, let alone install.

But, a lot of work has been done on this endeavour. Not saying this is perfect, but realistically we need an x86 version of the OS since no one is making Amiga hardware anymore.

It's too bad that the community could not consolidate on a single os way forward. There are a lot of people developing, but we are fragmented.

My 2 cents
1 x A500, Hi-toro 4000 :)
1 iMac OSx, 1 Mac Mini
1 Wintel 03 svr

What error are you getting on booting the CD?  At worst, you can always run AROS hosted on your native OS.

I have used the AROS bootable CD, and agree that it looks and feels just like an Amiga, only considerably faster.

I even have some PC using Co-Workers that saw the AROS CD and have asked to get a copy to play with. One is even a software developer that wants to code some multimedia apps for it. (MP3 Player, Car Audio center, Media Center and even DirectTV/Tivo controller.)

On a related note, what development environments exist for AROS? He's familiar with C (C-Something.. dunno what) and VB/Basic/Perl.

Booting's not usually a problem - but installing to a real hard drive partition takes a few steps. I've had no problems with running this under the (free) VMWare Server product though, installs, works, is able to see the network, etc.

Every Developer is welcomed !

Development Tools:
Aros Build System on Aros Website (Linux)
http://www.aros.org/

The probably most comfortable Way for Aros Application Development is AmiDevCpp:

http://amidevcpp.amiga-world.de/
http://amidevcpp.amiga-world.de/AmiDevCpp_v09/AmiDevCpp_Monster_Pack_v095_Setup_.exe

That' a complete IDE for C/C++ running under Windows.

Of course there is also a GNU C/C++ Compiler for Aros native.

i think that for now the best chance for x86 Amiga is Amithon.
Amithlon is commercial product, but AROS is not full usefull for now.

Maybe in the future could be a real x86 Amiga, but not now!

The main problem with Aros is lack of software and the fact that barely no computers seems to be supported fully with device drivers. It myself think it would be better if the Aros team tried to fully support a few computers models instead of trying to support all kinds of different mobos and such with half working workarounds like it is today.

I dont want to use a OS that for example use vesa drivers to get my gfx card working and so on..

Even if you managed to get a copy back then, using amithlon today crosses the grey line of legality.

AROS FTW!

(Always wanted to say 'FTW')

Anyway, speaking of standards.  FFS has g2g (got to go).  SFS needs to be native to GRUB.  Someone should get that bounty ASAP.

A 3D graphics API based on the latest OpenGL needs to be written so we can get back to the roots (games).

The shareware scene needs to be started AND SUPPORTED.  Through this, eventually a commercial company(s) may someday evolve to support the platform.

Money needs to be spent by users.  Piracy will kill this platform an keep it from getting off the ground.

I know that there was a dispute between the developers that worked on Amithlon, but it was released commercially and is even still available from some dealers.  Why would you say that someone that runs a software program that they legally purchased from a dealer, is doing something illegal?  If the developers have a case, let them fight it out in court, but don't blame the purchasers that had no part in creating the problem.

What do you base your statement on?
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)

Incorrect.  If you want a mobo that AROS supports (other then SATA/firewire which AROS does not currently support), get ASUS nVidia mobos.  Way back when I had Black Troll Technology Corporation active in retail, I made sure the product I was selling had AROS support.  AROS still benefits by the money I spent on nVidia (on ASUS) support.  Sound, 2D, NIC, works wonderfull.  Now there is even ATI support.
