new hard drive help
« on: February 14, 2015, 07:36:30 AM »
I have read everything I can and spent hours doing this over and over, I put a new ssd in my X1000 its the only hard drive in the computer. I replaced the ssd it came with with the new one. I am not getting it to boot after instaling  4.1FE. I used Epsilon's amiga X1000 blog and other thing I have read. It is just not working. I have seen nothing from A-eon or hyperion showing how this is done. What am I missing? I am very ierated   THANKS

I don't know anything about installing a hard drive in an X1000, but working in various technical support capacities for 30 years, I would recommend the following:  When you say "it is just not working", could you be more specific?  What exactly is it doing, and/or not doing?  Are you getting any error messages?  You have no idea how many times these simple questions will lead to more helpful advice!  ;)

#this has been your smartass, but hopefully helpful response.  Good luck! :)

Sorry, I should have said more. Ok, I am using 2 partitions DH0, DH1  system and work. Install on DH0 restart and get "Loder:elf Filesys:amigafs Dev:idea.0 File:amigaboot.of Options: (null) Loading: Failed. ---next line--- "Could not load idea.0:amigaboot.of: Unsupported function". This is what I get every time. The drive works great. 4.1FE will NOT boot. I have tried all the CFE mods over and over. Never in my life have I seen anything like this. Hey A-EON  lets start with information like "how the set up a new drive" show the partitions you recommend and why, What file system to use and how to do it ,....etc. How about this, the install disk does all this for the user like evey other OS on earth (leave an option for more experianced users to do other stuff and everyone is happy) .   sorry I am rambling.

I have never used a ssd card and certainly never run a hard drive with an Amiga 1000. However the ROM works slightly different on the Amiga 1000 and is on a floppy to give the machine functionality. I am sure you probably know all this and you have all that in place, but I thought it might be worth mentioning. In truth I have no idea what is the problem, wouldn't have the first clue as to how to solve it.

Just out of interest can you link the sites you are reading up on, and post a little bit on the history of the Amiga and where you got it from. Also some information on the drive and where it is located in the computer. Any other details about the machine would be very useful and the processes involved when you fire the machine up and what exactly do you see on the screen. Where are you reading the information you list. Quite fascinating given the age of the computer. Also was the computer working before you replaced the card. Just interested.

Is that error message coming up in the AmigaDOS shell or in the X1000 firmware? If it's the firmware, my guess is that the drive isn't fully prepped correctly. I don't have any experience with the X1000, but my understanding is that the firmware is similar to that of the old XE AmigaONEs. You might need to install the second-lever booter to the drive, done through Media Toolbox. Is the boot partition marked as bootable? Is the correct file system in the disk's RDB? Other possibility is that the firmware is looking for the drive at one address and it's located at another. Is it plugged into the same port as the old drive? Is there any sort of jumper configuration you need to do to match the old drive?

I think this kind of stuff might be why it takes AmigaKit 10 days to assemble and test each X1000 :)

Did you make the very first partition, BDH0, a 100 MB DOS/7 non-bootable partition that contains only the amigaboot.of file?

The name of the partition is "LOADER"

@danbeaver
Well at long last I have it. Yes I did however I have to find the "amigaboot.of" file myself and place it in the BDHO partition myself and it all done and works great. It would be no problem to do this again now that I know how it's ease. It would be very nice if that information was provided in the paperwork of on amigawicki     THANKS
