Post by: lassie on November 24, 2012, 05:54:27 PM
Hi guys what games are you playing this November :) If we go back to 1992 then some of us would probably play Alien 3, Lotus 3 or Alien Breed Special edition and Pinball Dreams and Cracy cars 3 ( cool game i think ) and Adams family
I still play those games from time to time :)

A long time since I played Amiga games. Skyrim, Starcraft 2, Civilization V are the ones I spend the most gaming time on today, looking forward very much to GTA 5...

I was playing Dungeon Master a few weeks ago (a very difficult dungeon by meynaf from EAB), but right now it's been Torchlight and a bunch of bullet hell shooters such as Espgaluda and Ketsui (man, I suck major butt at Ketsui :D). Pity there's none of those shooters for the Amiga :(

i play games on my playstation3 now days...

last time i played amiga games was in 2010. that was the year i had enough of retro gaming, it was time to move on. i had been stuck in the past since 1999... that's over 20 years of retro gaming... you get to a point where you feel your gonna puke. so i wanted to try something else, pc gaming i never felt any attachment to, since i have been gaming on my amiga. on the pc you have to change hardware and update software etc every time there is a new game. so the playstation3 was the natural choice for future gaming, the playstation3 have more or less become my new amiga now. its just one awesome gaming machine and i have experienced many time the 'wow factor' i got from the amiga days back in the day. but its a refreshing feeling of something new and i never thought i would experience that again. there is so many great and amazing games for the playstation3 out there. so now i just regret being stuck in retro gaming to long. i can recommend you amiga gamers here the playstation3, its an awesome gaming experience not to be missed.

hmmm, i'm currently wow'ing it up with the Mists of Pandaria expansion pack.
a bit of minecraft here and there. i'm currently banging the metal to see if I can press the old 3000 into service as a minecraft server after a few upgrades I have yet to come.
bit of left for dead2 and CounterstrikeGo with friends, or Day-Z mod for ArmaII with work colleagues.
not much dedicated amiga'izing game type stuff going on. a bit of monkey island or simon the sorcerer.. sourceror... sorce... magic bloke now and then. I did try syndicate the other day, but found that running on  anything over a 7Mhz '000 and the timing is all out of wack! :D

Kind of enjoyed playing it. I never played the Amiga version until recently. I played the c64 version though.

Nope, it's the first game. There's another one called Chaos Strikes Back. Dungeon Master 2 is the third game in the series. If you want to try Dungeon Master, then check out meynaf's version over at EAB: http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=49830.

Well I used to play Fallout 3 & NV and Skyrim on PS3, but after you played a lot like I have and your save file gets to big the PS3 systems keep freezing/lagging and that's not acceptable. My Fallout 3 character has nearly everything done and all unique items but the game crash withing 10 mins of playing now on such a big save. Not OK

Same for Skyrim, start freezing/lagging now when my save is large and ive played a lot also since no DLC is out for PS3 and skyrim I had to drop the PS3 system for new RPGs in favour for flawless PC play.

So had to switch from PS3 to PC on bethesda RPG's, sadly enough since I liked to play using a gamepad on my TV.

So im playing new games mostly on PC now, understandable when you have spent near 1k hours on the fallout and elder scrolls games on PS3 and get let down by not beeing able to play when you get far in.

On the Amiga, Naughty Ones, Ruff'n'Tumble and some Magic Pockets. Oh and Rodland, Parasol Stars.

On the laptop Saints Row the third (even though I finished it can't get enough of it). DAYZ, not sure I like it yet. Small games - All zombies must die collection.

Played Skyrim for a bit on the PC with the HD texture pack. No freezing on the PC ;-)

On the work desktop - CSS, on my own server with mates at work, "Friday arvo drinks" :-)

On the android phone - some stupid sheep game at the moment. Can't remember the name, but it likes to spam you now and then :-/

On the PSP - Little Big Planet.

On the Dreamcast - Gauntlet

On the WinUAE box - Banshee AGA CD32 version

bethesda's PS3 support has always been crap. I remember Fallout 3 having a glitch that would insta crash it near the brotherhood of steel's main compound. By simply walking in a cartain direction it would crash the game. this was fixed on the xbox version within a week. The PS3 version it had taken them nearly 3 whole weeks. Sucks.

back on the Amiga i have been getting Perihelion going again. However I can not remember all the rune codes for the spells. There is a large list of codes for spells. I had em on paper but it's missing.

Do you think it is because the System is "older" that it crash when there is to much saved? Or what can cause that on a system?

Because when more and more objects in the world are discovered the location of them are stored in the save file like items on the floor/tables etc and then it gets loaded in the ram and the ps3 has just to little ram at 256MB so it cripples when saves are to large.
So any of the fallout and elder scrolls gets unplayable when you have played long on one character.
I am sure they could bring an workaround for this but they might think it's to much work.

So selling broken games for the PS3 should not be allowed... since they have not fixed this issue in any of the games but keep releasing new ones with the same problems but just ignore it. That's so wrong on so many levels....

So I'm ditching Bethesda on console and I'll play em on pc instead. No more buying broken software for the ps3.

Also I skip quite a lot of ps3 games if they have no install to hard drive option because the blu-ray is to darn slow to load textures from and other content. Bought borderline 2 for PS3 without knowing and there where NOW install option, 10 mins after trying the game I ordered it for pc.

So I'm off the PS3 market, to many games with issues and to slow loading and other problems.

So atm I'm buying for pc and since I upgrade my pc quite often for quicker rendering and compiling anyways I have quite good hardware and have no problem running new games, I only have to spend a few hundred dollars extra for a new graphics card now and then but its no problem since I like to have quick gfx cards for protein folding anyways.

I thought the PS3 had 512 MB RAM, and you are right in that not all games run smootly on it. And some games take up to 5 GB of memory in saved games, just to get started and go a couple of levels. So i have to delete many saved games as my PS3 only have 80 Gb HardDisk.

256MB vram and 256MB ram.
You can replace your hard drive with nearly whatever 2.5" drive you want, I have an 750GB drive so I got no storage issues, before I had an SSD in it but the gain in most games where to slight and many games do not install to the HDD anyways so I'm happy with the 750GB drive.

Yes then you have no problems with storage :) Do you remember that PC i got last month, with Geforce and that, if i connect it to my plamsa, will it be able to play games in PS3 quality? I must admit i have not much experince with putting a PC to flatscreens :)

PS3 quality won't be any problem for your machine,  you can run many games in 1920x1080, PS3 runs most games in  1280x720 and many times it's scaled from a lower resolution and there are not many unscaled 1920x1080 games for ps3.
So yes you can play most in ps3 like settings and some higher.
Don't forget that using digital output on a plasma often require under/overscan tweaking but it's trivial and easy done in nvidias control panel.

You will also have ****loads faster loading times.
Some games work ok with a gamepad on pc also like Skyrim and Fallout since they are console ports.

Yeah, Bethesda is great at making buggy games  Take Oblivion, for example. The UNOFFICIAL patches for Oblivion and it's expansion fix over 3000 bugs, and these patches are made by the community. Another good one is the game's performance. There are some mods that make the game run MUCH smoother, and again those are made by the community.

It seems like Bethesda thinks that it's a good idea to just let the community handle those problems on the PC (and screw PS3)

The advantage of playing on the PC is of course the mods ;)

This last couple of weeks...

Amiga 1200:
UFO Enemy Unknown (AGA version)
Slam Tilt
Speedball 2 (2 player, which is the BEST way to play Speedball!)

PC:
X-Com Enemy Unknown
X-Wing Collectors Edition (tweaked to run on Windows 7)
Dungeon Keeper

iOS:
Pinball Arcade - just can't get enough of this, hope they green-light the Steam version for PC eventually.

Aare you using only one save, or several files?.*Also, do you have the system upgraded?. In fallout nv for example, upgrades solved the majority of problems, and i never had again the problem of freezes with beteshda games.
In fact, i have a save on nv and skyrim full of discoveries and objects and it plays perfectly.

Beside that I play StarCraft II on PC in a competitive manner! Also I play the newly released PlanetSide 2 man loads of people there...

Used to play battlefield 3 too but I got bored at it.

Its an unfortunate part of retro gaming that you will find the magnetic media eventually gives up the ghost. So many disks have become lost due to general use. Even with the most stringent of precautions disketts do eventually die.

My PS3 is a really old 40GB one, and I played through Fallout 3 from beginning to the end at least 3 times (1 good, 1 evil and 1 neutral, earning all those trophies for different levels), and I also bought the "game of the year" edition with all the add-on contents, which I also played through, and while there indeed was a few sporadic crashes during all that time of game play, I wouldn't call it "crap" in any way. Well, except that add-on (don't remember its name) where you took a river boat to that costal town/swamp area. That one crashed badly. OK, the first Fallout 3 version I had (an early version) didn't even get through the classroom part in the intro mission, but a DL fix remedied that problem!

:)

IMHO this is mostly true for the games that is also released for Xbox (which is 720p only). There has been many great games in full 1080p, Metal Gear Solid is a good example IMHO!

:)

That was my point. the first version of Fallout 3, I had the lunch tin special edition, was full of insta crashing bugs. The classroom been a prime example along with the brotherhood of steel main compound. So much so I gave it up and got the xbox version because they were patching that version quicker. However when the game of the year edition came out I got it for the playstation and it was all pretty much fixed. Excpet for Point Lookout, the mod you recall takemehomegrandma, which was glitchy. But even the xbox version was glitchy. :destroy:

for some reason it just seems to take them longer to fix things on the PS3 than it does the xbox in general. In fact why does it seem to be the norm to release very buggy games anyway.

True. :(

And even if you back up the disks or DL new images from the many online libraries, it can be a problem to acquire new physical floppies. 3.5" is walking in the footsteps of 5 1/4" in this regard. Can't remember when I last bought a new floppy. It's a dead medium.

But there are some solutions from companies like induvidual computer (thinking of their C64 products with memory cards etc).

And then there are emulators of course.

I think there is a lot of "politics" (or "business"/"sponsorship" if you like) involved. There are several cases where Xbox "mysteriously" got a lot higher priority at some game publishers.

GTA 4 is a prime example; when this much anticipated new version of the once *PS only* series of games was first announced, it was suddenly rumored that it wouldn't be released for PS3 at all, but in reality it *was* released, but with a few months delay.

Why, you ask?

Because of a $50,000,000 MS deal? (http://www.google.se/search?q=microsoft+50+million+rockstar&aq=0&oq=microsoft+50+million)

Not realistic, some might say. Well, look at the Commercial Success (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Theft_Auto_IV#Commercial_success) it had, setting at least two new world records in this regard (the best single day sales, and the best 7 days sales).

The tactical/strategic benefit MS/Xbox got from this single (and rather cheap) $50 million deal is probably enormous.

True.

I agree. Floppies slowly dying out. You can still buy them but I decided it wasn't worth the hassle any more. thats why I bought the HxC and did away with a physical drive. Same with the HDD it was just easier to work with a CF HDD then mess around with a clunky physical drive. To be honest the last few games I bought were defective and I ended up getting more use out of the manual than the disk.

it's not just magnetic mediums that are dying out. As reliable as cartridges are they too are dying out. All it takes is for some moisture to get in, for corded contacts or even a electrical fault in the system (My snes popped it's pico fuse ruining a copy of Desert strike) and the cart is gone. CD's and DVD's can only need one scratch and they are dead too.

Thats why I thankful for preservation projects that work to maintain healthy images of stuff.

I agree. There is obviously a lot of politics going on with these things. I read Games TM and the amount of stuff that you read is shocking about what goes on in the games industry. in the end it's the consumer that gets stiffed.

On a lighter note I have been enjoying Perihelion. I found a guide that contained all the glyph codes for the spells in the game. I have also been enjoying a much smoother gameplay experience with Frontier Elite II with the 1200. So much space and so little time to pirate.

@som99

One major save for every game and a few neutral/evil saves but they are small.
The system is updated and all games are running latest patch.
It won't be as noticeable if your save file is not big enough, collect lots of items in skyrim in your house, same in fallout 3 & NV collect loads of items in your house, in fallout 3 and NV I have all unique items in lockers also big amounts of material used for making weapons etc plus a collection of other rare items like the 2 Giant teddybears and tiny teddybears, tiny/giant gnomes etc placed nicely in my house.

Same goes for all Bethesda games, large collections of items and the entire world explored and you won't be able to play right on PS3.
The system will hang/freeze fast and the frame rate will be really low.

Do a few google searches and you will see this still affects updated games/systems for PS3 users, this is major problems and they have not been fixed.

So no more PS3 for me.

I hope that my cartridges will not die to soon, i have over 200 of them for the Nes,Snes, sega,Atari Jaguar etc. I have only 1 cartridge, that have failed in my life time, and it was the first Zelda for the Nes in gold cartridge :( But all others works so far, i read that cartridge, was a strong Medium to store data and could work many years to come.

Hi mate
Is it true that PS3 has 7 cores?

* 1 of 8 SPEs reserved for redundancy total floating point performance: 218 GFLOPS
GPU: RSX @550MHz

1.8 TFLOPS floating point performance
Full HD (up to 1080p) x 2 channels
Multi-way programmable parallel floating point shader pipelines
Sound: Dolby 5.1ch, DTS, LPCM, etc. (Cell-base processing)

Memory:

256MB XDR Main RAM @3.2GHz
256MB GDDR3 VRAM @700MHz

....or perhaps you prefer the short answer:

Yes.

Okay thanks :)
That is quite cool for a system that is 7 years old.

Another couple gig of RAM and OS4 would be even cooler...
..ah well, can't have it all.

Are it something you read that cartridges will soon stop to work? I have over 200 of them for all my machines, so i hope they will last long. i have heard that it was one of the better medium to store things on.
