It looks like the X-Amiga project is almost ready.
X-Amiga page (http://xamiga.net/index.html)
I have an unused x86 box waiting for this.
-
what's this all about then?
Can't get any info of the website
-
I dont think the site works right in some of the Amiga browsers.
Its basically a minimal Linux kernal setup just to run E-UAE
on a x86 box or PPC machine.
-
ah sounds interesting.
I'm browsing on my phone at the moment, so that's probably why I couldn't work it.
-
neat project...looking forward to the download.
15 seconds boot time huh? thats pretty quick
-
@spihunter
Thanks! I've bookmarked it for future reference.
@mintfresh
Show off! :-P
-
15 seconds boot time huh? thats pretty quick
AROS should beat that, easily.

yea..but does it run Amiga apps?

With EUAE it does. Yes, there is an integration bounty open (http://thenostromo.com/teamaros2/?number=7) to make it seemless.

But AROS will not let us enjoy classic apps as seemlessly as XAmiga, will it? In other words, if I attempt to launch DPaint IV, will a UAE window come up with workbench icons all over, or will DPaint IV come up in a window? Apples and Oranges here I think. My understanding is that AROS is not designed to be backward compatible with the Classic apps.

And how easy is it to install AROS directly to the hard drive? Is there a simple installer?

looks nice.... can't wait

@TheMagicM:

IMO this setup would suit fine UAE running on top of AROS hosted. Why you may ask, because one could (at least in theory ) run 68k AROS inside of it and, with time, get a completely transparent and Amiga IP free system.
Natively if one has support for all drivers, hosted so it can benefit from Linux ones.

From X-Amiga FAQ:
This site doesn't display properly on my browser...
Tested on Firefox, Opera, Safari, Konqueror; known not to work on Internet Explorer (no support for transparent png). Use a standards-compliant browser!

Yes I think it was Pocket IE causing the problems. The funny thing is you can't actually get to this message without a browser that displays the site!
Not wanting to start an argument about browsers and things(working as a web developer myself I personally get annoyed with having to support old versions of IE) but I think I you should always try and make it so your site degrades nicely in browsers that arn't upto date or standards compliant.
I wasn't showing off with the phone browser thing! Honest. I tend to browser alot of websites on my phone, during the day at work!

this is very cool, I think!
-
This sounds like a very cool project.
There are two features that I would submit for future, post 1.0 release. I realize that 1.0 hasn't been released yet, but I know I like to think about where I am going at least one version ahead when I write software. So, my suggestions are:
1) Support for the CatWeasal. This would pretty much make the system into a real Amiga, as even real Amiga floppies would work.
2) A way to reconfigure the system as different Amiga models on boot up. I don't like the idea of a menu at the beginning, as that would spoil the fantasy. It would also force user intervention for boot up. That would be a bad thing. Some non-intrusive bootup options could be:
a) Look on a SD card for a config file. This would allow model switching by just pulling out one SD card and inserting another. SD is cheap, and even throw away 8 meg SD cards would be plenty big for holding the Kickstart and config file. If no SD is found, boot to the default configuration on the hard drive.
b) Allow F-keys during the 15 second boot, to change the configuration. This could work similar to the way you can press an F-Key to change boot up drive on most BIOSes. This would be cleaner than a menu, but it would still require user intervention during the boot.
c) Have an Amiga application that will change the config so that on next reboot, the system is a different model. This would require that the application be available to all installations, so it could be quite a headache.
Actually as I type this, a third feature request comes to mind for even later in the development cycle. How about an Amiga application that could change the ADF that is loaded. It could work much like Alchohol 120%, or DeamoneTools works for CDs.

You know, I've always wondered why AROS never took an approach similar to Amithlon. I.e. Kernal, Emulation, Apps. Yes, I know that was not there initial goal, but if they had, they could have, just like Amithlon, rewritten every piece of code over time while still supporting users. Not a complaint, merely an observation.
I've even attempted a setup that would allow booting into AROS DOS and launching EUAE, instead of Wanderer, but have been hampered by my inability to install AROS to my hard drive. I've only just recently accomplished this, but have been too busy get to trying EUAE as a "Wanderer Replacement."
Oh well, one of these daze... :)

The Amithlon kernal was recently updated, but amithlon itself is DEAD, it was deemed illegal by A inc or whoever!!
Illegallly downloading illegal software!!
Do 2 wrongs make a right?? :-D

Looks like Amir did it!!!!!! he was having some problems with the alsa drivers if I recall.
Keep up the good work Amir!!

AROS will have a new Installer out shortly (http://thenostromo.com/teamaros2/?number=54). I'm expecting to see a beta release of the new installer any day now.

With menu, I meant a menu that stops the boot process and waits for input. Although now that you mention it, I would be MUCH happier if the bios screen at the beginning could be removed as well. I assume that that is what the "Linux bios" suggest was about.
The less non Amiga crap that we see during a normal boot up, the better.
-
It looks quite straightforward to include CatWeasel drivers... However, the floppy driver is read-only (http://www.soundtracker.org/raw/cwfloppy/).
I also don't like the idea of a startup menu (just personal preference). It'd be possible to implement one, but some programming is required (= more delay). At the moment the system boots straight into Amiga OS.
LinuxBIOS is still experimental and only works on limited hardware. Current BIOS chips don't enough memory to contain a kernel for a desktop system (embedded kernels are much smaller), so although it's a great idea, there's still a way to go.
As for detecting the presence of config files on SD cards (or other flash devices) - yes, shouldn't be too hard to do!

There are no download links on the X-Amiga site, not even for a beta version. Is it possible to get this anywhere?

"As for detecting the presence of config files on SD cards (or other flash devices) - yes, shouldn't be too hard to do!"
That is great news!
While getting rid of the PC BIOS screen would be cool, jumping through a ton of hoops to do it by loading LinuxBIOS probably isn't worth it in the short run. Maybe not at all.
Unless I am wrong though, there have been motherboards in the past that would let you install your own boot screen to the BIOS. This boot screen hid all of the BIOS messages. We see this implemented by manufacturers all the time in laptops. While this would still leave the short delay, it could be used to improve the Amiga illusion by putting an Amiga boot screen instead of a PC one.
Does anyone know if any current motherboards support this?
-
My motherboard supports adding an image to the BIOS. It's made by Gigabyte, and uses a tool called FaceWizard to add the image. Try googling for that to find a mobo that is still sold.
The images must be 640x480x8 bit format, and it doesn't hide all bios text, mainly the POST and drive scan. The SATA BIOS info still shows though.

AndrewBell wrote:

Get an ami bios mobo with boot image support, like on a K7S5A, use one of the tools that are around to insert a different pic in the binary ROM image, flash it to the BIOS, tada, no ugly BIOS screen. (with option turned on in BIOS setup) Think it still kicks up the configuration summary though. But think there's ways to sneak an image in the bootblock also, so you could stick it in there to to hide all that boring
35,200 bogomips..... passed..
kinda crap

I'm eager to play with this!

Any news? I can't wait to put my avid finger on that and install AmigaOS 3.9!

I would like to have a copy too.
It would not bother me to make it one of main machines.

@gdanko:
I apologise. To be fair, it's only because I mentioned it (and someone found the website) that questions started rolling in, and I had to answer with something.
I also didn't realise that the project's final 1% would be so tough. Nearly there...

Evening all.
My first post on this site is to ask a question.
Suprised? No, neither am I really.
X-Amiga sounds like the best way to run an amiga emulator.
(As a dedicated O/S on un-native hardware that is.)
I read above, and @ X-Amiga site that a PPC version
will be released. Please tell me thats true.
So on to my real burning question.
Would any of you accept my first born child as payment
for a working X-Amiga version for PS3?
I'm not that interested in learning all the in's and out's
of Yellow Dog Linux yet would love a "Workbench" for my
new 'super-computer' ;)
I know PS3 emulation is already underway, Amiga included
if I'm not mistaken, so it should be possible yeah?
-
@Lernatix
As soon as the x86 version is working properly, I intend to start work on a PPC version for Mac.
I don't know much about the PS3 - I can see various versions of Linux have been installed, but how do you use a desktop OS on a gaming console??
Amir
-
Q. How do we use other O/S on a gaming console?
A. We don't. The PS/3 is not classified as one.
A. The PS/3 is much more than a gameing console.
A. USB or BlueTooth keyboards and mice are available.
Q. Would you like a boy or a girl? :-) ;-) :lol:
-
Well you will need to re-write x amiga to use a minimal install on whatever linux flavour has been ported to PS3. This would be a mamouth task I would imagine, and elts be honest pretty pointless for the low number of people with a PS3
-
:roll:
My only answer to that statement is...
If you had one(PS/3), you would want it too! :getmad:
I guess I can only hope that Amiga and
Sony go to lunch together one day. ;-)
-
The site gives no indication of minimum hardware requirements for a smooth Amiga experience. I ocassionally find older PCs out on the curb, and it would be nice to save one just for this project, if I knew what kind of processing power was required.
-
If you had one(PS/3), you would want it too!
Ummmmm nope. Played on one, not impressed enough over the xbox to fork out that sort of cash.
-
QNX is a minimal footprint OS on x86, will X-Amiga run on a QNX hosted machine?
-
@JJ
X-Amiga was built using Gentoo - and Gentoo runs on PS3. I'm not suggesting a port would be easy, but that's one less obstacle!
@ral-clan
Minimum hardware requirements: I'm not sure either! My development machine is a VIA Epia 600MHz with 1GB RAM, and E-UAE runs very smoothly. On the other hand, my test laptop is an old Sony Vaio (Intel Pentium III) running at about 400MHz with 128MB RAM, and it visibly labours...
@amigadave
X-Amiga only runs on Linux. The system is also far smaller than Amiga XL (which used QNX to host UAE). While Linux apps are supposedly quite easy to port to QNX, the kernels are very different - it would probably be a major project.
Amir

Looks like a good project. I wonder if you could get Cloanto to drop the K-Lite distro they include in their Amiga Forever package for this. If I recall correctly the K-Lite doesnt work out of the box and takes some messing around to get working right.
-
@neofree
KX Light is a superb live UAE. It uses Knoppix as a base, and 'just works', never any problems (for me). I'm sure Cloanto are working on a hard disk installer; that was really the only missing feature!
-
I'll just cross my fingers that some more people with
linux experience and a history with amiga's buy a PS3!
I just don't know enough about linux. 8(
