WHDLoad trouble
« on: June 17, 2003, 10:27:41 AM »

I have been tinkering with UAEX on the XBOX, and UAE on Winblows and have run into a problem that maybe someone could understand.

I installed Citadel, but when I went to load it, it gave me the error, that you see in the pic above

Yet when I play it from ADF image I have no problems. I have tried many different configurations with no luck, you got any clues?

Thankx!

If you are running it through WHDLOAD you need the kickstart file. If you got a real A500 then you can extract it from it. I think there is a readme over at the WHDLOAD site that tells you how to obtain the file needed.

You need an A500 kickstart file, and you need to get SKick from aminet as well (it contains relocation tables for a bunch of kickstarts).

What Kickstart ROM, I have 3.0 and 3.1 and like I said this game runs off of ADF image just fine. I don't understand.

Wait so you are saying I need Kickstart 2.0? In that case I can't do anything cause I have to have OS 3.1 installed.

Buy the Amiga Forever CD and you'll get all kickstarts from version 1.1 up to 3.1 :)

(and a nice emulator along... ;) )

Even if the game works fine normally, if the WHDLoad installer has been written in such a way that it sets up a "virtual" kickstart 1.3 machine, WHDLoad needs the kickstart image.

I don't know why the slave author chose to do that, but he did, so you need a Kickstart 1.3 image in Devs:Kickstarts/

Most WHDLoad installers don't need it, but some do.

You don't need to boot UAE with the 1.3 kickstart; WHDLoad will load and relocate a 1.3 kickstart when you run the game.

you should also copy over the matching .RTB file.

Kickdos is very usefull in whd as it simplifies writting of the loader no end.

Setup the virtual Amiga with kick1.3 or 3.1 (depending on game needs), then its just a case of booting the disk image or using the virtual hd if files are used. All thats needed then is the code to tell the slave how to boot the image or files (name of exe ect .)

Some games get away with no need of patching, but its always nice to have fixes included in the loader.

Hmm ok I did that and renamed Kickstart 1.3 to kick34005.500 but now I get some new funky error. I think I am going to give up on this. Not too impressed with WHDLoad thus far, most games don't seem to work, and if they do, you seem to have to go through hell to get there.

Its only a few games that require some tweaking to get it to run with WHDLoad, atleast as far as I have experienced it.

You could always go to www.back2roots.org and check out their HD-installed games directory since a lot of those are WHDLoad'ed and executes perfectly. :)

I had trouble with it on my real Amiga too. :/

Course I am going to keep trying, but I really feel like giving up, unfortu\natly, my nature does not allow it.

Hmm, figured I'd give Shadow Of THe Beast a go. But it claims that the disc images are corrupt, so I download another set of adf images, and they are supposed to be corrupted, so I download another and another, and they are all corrrupted, yet amazingly enough, the damn game plays perfectly if you just boot it off adf. Man I dunno about this thing.

Most WHDLoad installs only work with the original disks. Most ADFs on the net are cracks. Some installers have been updated to support the legalised cracks from back2roots.org, but in general WHDLoad installs only install the original, uncracked versions. This is A) because the installer slave author cannot be expected to support all the different cracks out there and B) WHDLoad is not a tool for piracy.
