Gaming on an A3k
« on: February 05, 2004, 02:27:34 PM »
I want to do some gaming............

I have an A3k w/WarpEngine 040 40mhz 80 megs
ram and a CV64 gfx card using Picasso96.

Will I be able to run the old 'OCS' (OS 1.3) games
and the 'AGA' games??
Or am I just stuck in the middle somewhere??
Stealth ONE  8-)

You cannot run AGA games, however WHDLoad should help you with the 1.x era games.

I think you said it best with 'being stuck...',   your gaming experience will be very limited to rtg games that perform well on an 040.

You can try to boot with alternate startups that degrade your system to run old software and have some success.  I gave up a long time ago to make my 3k's play games that weren't design to run on it.  The 32bit structure (bus, processor, etc.) make it difficult to use old games.

Even games that meet the specs of your 3k, will provide grief if you run any system performance enhancements and settings.

I use all of my 3k's for productivity and entertainment (non game ).

Good luck!

Matt

Or he could get WHDLoad, as suggested, and run anything but AGA games.

As far as I know, WHDLoad requires AGA (Tried to install it on my A500 hd for some nasty disk-juggling games)

WHDLoad requires the following in order to work properly:

* Some fast ram (4MB or more is ideal)
* Some chip ram (2MB is ideal)
* 68010 CPU (68000 works rarely as it is missing some required functions which WHDLoad often uses in its install files)
* A hard drive

That's it.

Of course, you cannot run AGA games on non-AGA machines.

Actually...

WHDLoad works on my 2MB A600. Well, Lemmings and Flashback do, at least. Load times are worse than floppy (preload isn't usable), but it does work.

So, I'm wrong. Then I think it was the OS (Wb 1.3) wich was too old or so.
