1 of my Denebs not recongizing devices until restart
« on: January 21, 2010, 04:18:19 PM »
Still loving my three Denebs -- classic Amiga product of the decade as far as I'm concerned. But I have run into a bit of difficulty with the one that's in my 3000 after doing a 100 percent reinstall of the system. I will eventually boot from USB stick, but for the moment I'm booting the 3000 from a SCSI hard drive with nothing on it by OS 3.9 and the Deneb stuff.

Problem is that at bootup no USB devices are recognized (like a USB stick with FFS partitions on it and a mouse). After running Trident and restarting things from there, the USB devices do show up.

What's missing?

Hope to be booting this machine from USB very soon. My A2000 is booting from a USB stick via Deneb, so I either knew what I was doing there or stumbled onto the right path. Thanks, all!

Get these modules (you need to rename the suffix from .zip.pdf to .zip):
http://www.a1k.org/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=22544&d=1263769764

from this thread (german unfortunately):

http://www.a1k.org/forum/showthread.php?p=316462#post316462

The problem is that some cpu boards turn on the caches of the system very early without masking the zorro III space cache-inhibiting correctly, causing all kind of havoc for the deneb driver, which is active that early. After installing one or the other rom tag from the archive in the flashrom (try which one works better for you), you must re-enable the caches directly after SetPatch (e.g. using the CPU command), otherwise your machine will probably crawl.

Hope this helps.

Hi Chris, do you know which cpu cards are affected? Phase 5 Cyberstorm MK3's or Cyberstorm PPCs?

Because you can turn off the 060 caches in the Cyberstorm config menu (hold down ESC on  power up).

thnx

Yes, everything you suggested worked perfectly, and I am now booting my A3000 from a USB memory stick. Thanks again.

Cyberstorm MK1 is not affected, but I think MK2, MK3/PPC are. I don't have a list of these boards, sorry -- but I probably could look up all the reports indicating these problems and their hardware configuration, if this is of interest.

Turning off the caches in the config menu won't do any good because at that point, Poseidon is already running...

Great. Which module did you use? Just for the record...

Sounds like the problem that I reported with my A3000 & WarpEngine. I'll give it a try too. thanks.

The first and only one I tried was the nocache one, not the one with data in name. Since that worked, I didn't try the other. I did also re-enable CPU caches in the startup-sequence right after setpatch.

It's working great, and on my way home after work I'm going to buy a couple more USB sticks so I can have backups of my Amiga systems all over the place. Such piece of mind! :-)

Oh, and I should mention that this 3000 now has a CyberStorm 040 board in it -- I believe Mark II.

I'm glad that I finally found this thread, as I have the same issue, with a Deneb, with v9 firmware, and an A4000D.  I have the exact same errors, when I check, in Trident, why Poseidon hasn't loaded any USB drivers, after startup.

However, I have an A3640 v3.1, as my CPU.  I've already tried the NOCACHE romtag, that Chris linked to, above, but it doesn't seem to help me.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks!
