2. if you get a router with a dhcp server you should be able to use adsl. just set your ip to 168.192.0.1 or something similar. its described in the manual of the router. The router acts as a gateway to the internet and it gets an external ip address from your provider automatically.

1. dunno much about that. just note that afaik there is no dvd player for CSS encrypted dvds for the amiga since that takes a commercial licence. maybe decss has been ported... dunno.
My name is Filson. I solve problems.

Hello there. As for #1 I am not sure.

As for #2, I have Earthlink DSL and share it between
my Amiga-4000 and Windows XP Machine.

Here is what you need to get DSl to work with Amiga.

This is the software you need.
#1 Miami TCP / IP Or Genesis TCP / IP.
#2 Ibrowse 2.3 Preferably, but the current versions
of AWeb or Voyager should work as well.
#3 Either Miami SSL Or AmiSSL Depending on what
browser you use.

If you get an X-Surf  /  X-Surf II Or any other Amiga
or if you have any of the PCI Controller cards you could use a PCI based network card.

I use The X-Surf Network card.

I am so happy with the ability to use DSL on both
of my computers.

I am also in the process of restoring an SGI Inddy.
After I get the Indy up and running I will try out using
DSL with that system as well.

Eventually I will get the Network Adapter for my
Sony PlayStation 2, and use DSL for online gaming
with my PS2.

If you need more help, ask again.

Just reminded me.. in this months issue of .net magazine (UK) there is an article about getting your old amiga on-line.

No mention of the amiga's current situation tho!

There's a package on Aminet that will create a DVD dosdriver. I don't recall the name, but a search for "dvd" will bring it up. You can use any CDFS with it, but I think most will fail at the 4Gb limit. It works, but not very well. You can use the DVD as a CD drive without error, but with CacheCDFS I get read errors on DVD disks. AmiCDFS performs slightly better.

AllegroCDFS is the only filesystem that currently supports DVD UDF directly. You should have no problems with that, either with the default driver, or one created by that package above.

If you want to play DVD video, you're out of luck unless you have a top-of-the-line PPC card. Or a decoder card... maybe through the Mediator?

AMP can play DVDs, not sure how well, you'd definitely need one of the faster PPC cards. I think it even has DeCSS support. As others have said, you also need the Allegro file system to read them.

Hello,

1. I`ve had a DVD drive in my Amiga for approx 1 year now.  The Allegro filesystem provided with the PowerFlyer IDE cards handles them fine.  I only have an 060 however, so I can`t comment on how fast a PPC could play DVDs.

2. As filson said, if you have more than one computer, you should be able to get online with an ethernet router (approx £40), however most of these require a seperate ADSL Ethernet modem (approx £60).  Netgear have one with both built in for about £115.

If you are using Genesis/AmiTCP on you Amiga, you will NOT be able to use DHCP.  Genesis/AmiTCP only support BootP (an earlier version of DHCP), which doesn`t support all of the required info.

All is not lost however,  configure your IP address manually, set you Default Gateway as the IP address of the router (not the modem!), you`ll then have to configure your ISP`s DNS servers manually.

I have been using this for just over a week, with no problems.

Regards,

Frank.
