Amiga 3000 kickstart file... goes where?
« on: February 20, 2007, 02:13:40 AM »
Hi there,
I am new here. I have used the Amiga, first a 500 I got in 1989 then I upgraded to the 3000 in 1992 which I sold in early 1995 and then just about forgot about these nice machines.

Recently, I was donated a large stockpile of Amiga 500,1000,2000,3000 and even one 1200. Actually, about the 3000s, I only got the motherboards, daughtercards and power supplies... no casing.

When I turn on the 3000 MoBo, all it does is ask for a floppy that would carry a kickstart. My memory tells me that the 3000 had its kickstart in a file 512k in size located in the directory libs or devs or... something.

Can anyone tell me what this file's name must be and where must it be located and also... where can I find it?

Thank you all.

Yes very active, welcome.  Hope you can get a case for your A3000.  Get a 3.1 ROM for it too.

Welcome to the gang. Sounds like you can try some experimentation with that bare A3000 motherboard. You can buy some ready made tower kits, or build your own if you feel adventurous enough.
Amiga 3000D UP and running! Hear that clicking. 8)
Amiga 3000D & 4000D in storage sadly.

As much as I don't really like Elbox, I recommend a Mediator 3000D board, and a ATX style tower case.

I t seems these files cannot be purchased. Can they be found anywhere on the internet?

At least for KS 2.04 or 2.05.

@eslapion

Not legally.  You will need real Kickstart roms to use your A3640 (or any other 040 or 060 accellerator) anyway.

Funny, we're back to the same debate I had about this about 15 years ago.

Since the purchase of the original Amiga 3000 included the cost of the license for the operating system, asking to pay again for the information that was lost over time amounts to a fraud...

However, that being said, when the 3000 was originally sold KS 3.1 did not exist and asking money for it is legitimate... not so for KS 2.04 which did come with the machine. I think KS 1.3 also originally came with the 3000.

@eslapion

I wasn't debating.  Simply stating you won't easily find Kickstart files on the web due to copyright issues.  (No mention as to rightful ownership, etc.)
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

Remember you need to search for "SuperKickstart".

If you find the files on the net they are slightly larger than regular kickstart files as they have the SuperKickstart information.

526,848 or 526,572 for 2.x/3.x
282,624 or 283,136 for 1.3

You can also make floppy disks with superkickstart images on.

http://www.aminet.net/package.php?package=util/misc/MakeSuperDisk.lha

Remember that your hard drive boot partition has to be named correctly (WB_2.x) in order for the KS1.4 program to find the SuperKickstart image on the hard drive. You cannot just rename your hard drive icon, you have to change it in HDToolbox.

I also think that it has to be formatted in FFS but dont quote me on that.
