AmigaOne
« on: February 24, 2006, 07:21:16 AM »
Does it really cost that much?? Who makes these boards? They should tell a PC Mobo manafacturer to build sone for cheap. And since there so cheap, all you guys are going to get one. There cheapist one right now is $450/528(whats VAT?) I could build a new/ok PC with that much alone.

Also, Isn't AmigaOS4 out right now? There posts here w/ people who don't know that it came out.  :-?

Yes, they really do cost that much. Well, I should say they did when they were available. About 10x the cost of a "PC" motherboard. By PC mobo manufacturers, I take it you mean people who make Intel boards? Well I doubt they would invest in PPC boards for Amiga unless they knew they would get a big return from it

Where have you seen one for $450? Are you sure it was an AmigaOne, not a PegasOS?

OS4 is available only to those who bought the AmigaOne board, and those who are beta testing the PowerUP version for "Classic" Amigas with PPC boards.

PegasOS

"Pegasos" is the motherboard, "MorphOS" is the operating system. "Pegasos" does not have the capital OS.

Thanks for the correction. Out of interest, any idea why it's called Pegasos? Presumably it's supposed to hint at Pegasus, the Greek mythological winged horse, but what is Pegasos supposed to mean?

Here is the link (it's the AmigaOne-XE w/ G3 750FX@800MHz cpu) $450 is w/out VAT (what is that???), its $528.75 w/ VAT.

I hate this website, but it looks like I could buy a board from it.

Now a website that I would really like would be (like when you customize a dell computer online) you pick the mobo, cpu speed, RAM, HD, Drives, OS, case, etc, and they would either just send you the parts and you build it, or you pay a ton more for them to build it.

That price is in UK Pounds - after conversion it's about $800 USD for the board (excluding taxes), or $930 once you take taxes into account.

Or it would be except you can't buy one because there aren't any.  The price on that page is a guide price at which you would hypothetically be able to buy one 'via dealers' if any dealers had them in stock.

Bah! The whole AmigaOne thing annoys the hell out of me... Why pay waaaaaay over the odds for crappy under-powered hardware and an unfinished OS?

The sensible approach would have been to go for an x86 mini-ITX-based board from EPIA or something similar with a standard set of hardware specs - available in quantity for a decent price.

But as we know, owners of the Amiga brand since Commodore have basically been irresponsible and stupid with it, even more so than Commodore itself, if that was possible...

Anyway... Rant mode off now... I need some sleep!

I believe Pegasos is the Greek spelling, and Pegasus is the Latin ("rest of the world") spelling.

I see, thanks for clearing that up :-) Thinking about it, Pegasos does seem more Greek than Pegasus.

Thats because a mod should lynch the owners and burn their building to the ground.
