Buffered interface- faster than vanilla 1200 IDE?
« on: August 29, 2008, 06:36:41 PM »
Thats the question guys. I have an elbox 4xEIDE buffered interface with nothing on it but my main boot drive (which is compact flash). Is there any benefit in having the interface between the drive and the mobo?

The 4xEIDE doesnt enhance the speed of the system but it permits LBA-48bit,fixes the 4GB limit and it gives you an unrestricted ATAPI/UDF filesystem.

Not true.

When I use my 4Gb CF card it's like 1,4 Mb/s when I install 4xEide I have 1,7Mb/s :D. "Huge" difference, but...

That's the difference.

And you can always connect like 4 IDE drives.

It's the software that comes with it rather than the hardware that does all this.

There are free alternatives to all these patches with the exception of UDF, which is not really as useful as it sounds because all DVD's today are UDF/ISO9660 dual format and "just work" with the software developed for CD's.

It does however collect everything into one place for you.

There are not free alternatives that enable the last two channels, IDEFIX/CacheCDFS for example can be downloaded/installed but needs registration unless you own the Commercial versions supplied with Buddha Flash or IDEFIX Express.

Of course. If you need four IDE channels then it is a very good choice. A good collection of software with an easy to use installer, the hardware you need to use four ports and a reasonable price.

However if all you want is 48-bit LBA for hard drives larger than 128GiB or support for ATAPI drives including DVD-ROM and you just want to use the standard 2-channel IDE connector then look no further than Aminet, Amiga.org, EAB & Google.
